The focus for the attack module is the representation of attack helicopter units in the conduct of deliberate attacks; however, many of the models described can be applied to general helicopter operations. The formulations are limited to the major events that occur during an attack helicopter deliberate attack and represent initial research to portray attack helicopter operations in JWAEP.

Book excerpt: The Sustained Operations Model (SOM) is an event sequenced Monte Carlo simulation computer program that utilizes externally generated cost and single mission effectiveness results to examine the effectiveness of a group of attack helicopter (AH) aircraft operating in a combat environment over a sustained period of operations. The single mission effectiveness inputs used by SOM are generated by an external program such as GLOBAL or EVADE, complex combat simulation programs that evaluate the outcome of an attack by an AH fire team against enemy ground units that include an air defense capability. The cost factor is represented in the actual use of SOM, where comparisons of alternative AH systems are based on using equal cost force sizes. Additional cost factors can also be applied to end game results such as aircraft losses, ordnance and fuel expenditures, and maintenance demands, to derive comparative operational costs during the period of operations.

Book excerpt: Today’s Army faces an environment much different from that which it prepared for in the Cold War. Massed armor battles on the plains of Europe, for which the Army was trained and equipped, have become much less likely while involvement in smaller and more limited conflict has become more probable. Future conflict is more likely to resemble Grenada, Panama, or Somalia than Desert Storm. As world demographics shift from rural to urban areas, the cities will increasingly become areas of potential conflict. They cannot be avoided as a likely battlefield, and have already played a prominent part in Army combat operations in the last decade. If the Army is to keep pace in this changing environment it must look to the cities when developing doctrine, technology, and force structure. The close battlefield of Mogadishu or Panama City is much different from the premier training areas of the National Training Center or Hohenfels. Yet aviators have been presented the dilemma of training for the latter environment and being deployed to the former. For most aviators facing urban combat, it is a matter of learning as they fight. To avoid the high casualties and collateral damage likely in an urban fight against a determined opponent, however. Army aviation must train and prepare before they fight. Attack helicopters are inextricably woven into the fabric of combined arms operations. But for the Army to operate effectively as a combined arms team in an urban environment, both aviators and the ground units they support must understand the capabilities and limitations attack helicopters bring to the battle. This paper presents an historical perspective of how attack helicopters have already been used in this environment. It also discusses the factors that make city fighting unique, and the advantages and disadvantages for attack helicopter employment in an urban environment, as well as implications for future urban conflicts.

Book excerpt: Military conflicts, particularly land combat, possess the characteristics of complex adaptive systems: combat forces are composed of a large number of nonlinearly interacting parts and are organized in a dynamic command-and-control network; local action, which often appears disordered, self-organizes into long-range order; military conflicts, by their nature, proceed far from equilibrium; military forces adapt to a changing combat environment; and there is no master “voice” that dictates the actions of every soldier (i.e., battlefield action is decentralized). Nonetheless, most modern “state of the art” military simulations ignore the self-organizing properties of combat.This book summarizes the results of a multiyear research effort aimed at exploring the applicability of complex adaptive systems theory to the study of warfare, and introduces a sophisticated multiagent-based simulation of combat called EINSTein. EINSTein, whose bottom-up, generative approach to modeling combat stands in stark contrast to the top-down or reductionist philosophy that still underlies most conventional military models, is designed to illustrate how many aspects of land combat may be understood as self-organized, emergent phenomena. Used worldwide by the military operations research community, EINSTein has pioneered the simulation of combat on a small to medium scale by using autonomous agents to model individual behaviors and personalities rather than hardware.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a methodology which simulates the activity, near the FEBA, of the Army's attack helicopter and the activity of hostile artillery in two formats : uniformly distributed area fire and precision fire against a point target as directed by a forward observer. A stochastic computer simulation was developed that varies the modeled activities from one replication to another. Current concepts of attack helicopter employment in the anti-armor role are used. Concepts of intervisibility, detectability, target location error, C-cubed time delay, and artillery round-to-round dispersion are also incorporated in the model. The model was experimented upon, using a hypothetical artillery weapon system, and the vulnerability predictions of the model are displayed and analyzed. (Author).

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the ability of an attack helicopter battalion to resupply itself with fuel and ammunition. The scenario used in the study considered one attack helicopter battalion, equipped with the AH-64 helicopter, engaged in an anti-armor mission in an European environment. It utilized a three-FARP system to re-arm and refuel its attack helicopter companies. The scenario only depicted the battalion resupplying itself with its own organic truck assets. A model depicting the battalion logistical system and its employment of the attack helicopter companies was constructed using SLAM, a special purpose simulation language, with FORTRAN inserts. This model depicted the movement of convoys to and from a brigade support area, where they picked up fuel and ammunition, the dispersal of these supplies to the FARPs, and the use of fuel and ammunition by the attack helicopter companies. The results identified those elements of the system, which had the greatest impact on the battalion's ability to operate. They also illustrated the effect of operating at extended distances and the impact of vehicle attrition on the three-FARP system. Keywords: Attack helicopters, Logistics, Simulation.
