Book excerpt: Simulation of turbulent mixing and chemical processes in the near-field plume and plume-vortex regimes has been successfully carried out recently using a reduced gas phase kinetics mechanism which substantially decreased the computational cost. A detailed mechanism including gas phase HOx, NOx, and SOx chemistry between the aircraft exhaust and the ambient air in near-field aircraft plumes is compiled. A reduced mechanism capturing the major chemical pathways is developed. Predictions by the reduced mechanism are found to be in good agreement with those by the detailed mechanism. With the reduced chemistry, the computer CPU time is saved by a factor of more than 3.5 for the near-field plume modeling. Distributions of major chemical species are obtained and analyzed. The computed sensitivities of major species with respect to reaction step are deduced for identification of the dominant gas phase kinetic reaction pathways in the jet plume. Both the near field plume and the plume-vortex regimes were investigated using advanced mixing models. In the near field, a stand-alone mixing model was used to investigate the impact of turbulent mixing on the micro- and macro-scale mixing processes using a reduced reaction kinetics model. The plume-vortex regime was simulated using a large-eddy simulation model. Vortex plume behind Boeing 737 and 747 aircraft was simulated along with relevant kinetics. Many features of the computed flow field show reasonable agreement with data. The entrainment of the engine plumes into the wing tip vortices and also the partial detrainment of the plume were numerically captured. The impact of fluid mechanics on the chemical processes was also studied. Results show that there are significant differences between spatial and temporal simulations especially in the predicted SO3 concentrations. Simulations were performed using the LES model available in FLUENT[superscript trademark symbol], a commercial simulation package for flow and reactions. Flow geometry and mesh were created in GAMBIT[superscript trademark symbol] and exported to the solver. Large eddy simulations model scales of flow that are smaller than a threshold scale and resolve those larger than the same. The interactions between these two ranges of scales can be modeled as a subgrid stress term in the model equations for flow, i.e., the Navier-Stokes equations. Thus, in order to solve the equations for a given flow situation, a model has to be provided for the stress term. In our simulations, Smagorinsky's model has been used to model the stress term. This model is an eddy-viscosity type model and has a single parameter C[subscript s] which determines the model behaviour. It has been shown that this constant is not universal and is dependent on local flow conditions. This work has confirmed that the value of C[subscript s] is dependent on local flow conditions and is not a universal constant. Due to the fine meshes that were used, the effect of C[subscript s] on the simulations was not pronounced. Mixing in the reactor was simulated by incorporating a three-environment model in the LES scheme. A finite mode probability density function (FMPDF) approach was adopted to study the micromixing. The micromixing rate was modeled using the "equilibrium hypothesis" and its value was obtained from flow information. A simple reaction (A+B [right pointing arrow] C) was studied using a single reaction progress variable when the reactor is operated under premixed configuration.

The program was comprised of an experimental effort; an analytical, modeling, and computational effort; and a diagnostics, instrumentation, and data-acquisition-development effort, with significant progress in each. With regard to gas-phase shear-layer mixing and combustion, effects of inflow/initial conditions, compressibility, and Reynolds number were experimentally investigated and, to a large extent, clarified. New measures to characterize level sets in turbulence were developed and successfully employed to characterize experimental data of liquid-phase turbulent-jet flows as well as three-dimensional direct-numerical-simulation data of Rayleigh-Taylor-instability flows. The computational effort has added to our understanding of the (H2+NO)/F2 chemical system employed in the shear-layer-mixing investigations as well as mixing in high-speed flows, along with further developments in Riemann-Invariant-Manifold gasdynamic simulation techniques and their application to unsteady detonation phenomena. On the diagnostic front, developments in digital imaging and Image Correlation Velocimetry have continued, and been used to investigate turbulent-jet mixing, the unsteady flow over an accelerating airfoil, to mitigate aliasing problems in the computer reconstruction of (2+1)-dimensional isosurface data, and in other applications.
