Book excerpt: Offering a fresh take on laser engineering, Laser Modeling: A Numerical Approach with Algebra and Calculus presents algebraic models and traditional calculus-based methods in tandem to make concepts easier to digest and apply in the real world. Each technique is introduced alongside a practical, solved example based on a commercial laser. Assuming some knowledge of the nature of light, emission of radiation, and basic atomic physics, the text: Explains how to formulate an accurate gain threshold equation as well as determine small-signal gain Discusses gain saturation and introduces a novel pass-by-pass model for rapid implementation of "what if?" scenarios Outlines the calculus-based Rigrod approach in a simplified manner to aid in comprehension Considers thermal effects on solid-state lasers and other lasers with new and efficient quasi-three-level materials Demonstrates how the convolution method is used to predict the effect of temperature drift on a DPSS system Describes the technique and technology of Q-switching and provides a simple model for predicting output power Addresses non-linear optics and supplies a simple model for calculating optimal crystal length Examines common laser systems, answering basic design questions and summarizing parameters Includes downloadable Microsoft® ExcelTM spreadsheets, allowing models to be customized for specific lasers Don’t let the mathematical rigor of solutions get in the way of understanding the concepts. Laser Modeling: A Numerical Approach with Algebra and Calculus covers laser theory in an accessible way that can be applied immediately, and numerically, to real laser systems.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the use of fiber lasers in engineering applications has gradually become established as an engineering discipline on its own. The development of fiber lasers is mainly the result of studies from various domains like photonics, optical sensing, fiber optics, nonlinear optics, and telecommunication. Though many excellent books exist on each of these subjects, and several have been written specifically to address lasers and fiber lasers, it is still difficult to find one book where the diverse core of subjects that are central to the study of fiber laser systems are presented in simple and straight forward way. Fiber Lasers: Fundamentals with MATLAB Modelling, is an introduction to the fundamentals of fiber lasers. It provides clear explanations of physical concepts supporting the field of fiber lasers. Fiber lasers’ characteristics are analyzed theoretically through simulations derived from numerical models. The authors cover fundamental principles involved in the generation of laser light through both continuous-wave (CW) and pulsing. It also covers experimental configuration and characterization for both CW and Q-switching. The authors describe the simulation of fiber laser systems and propose numerical modelling of various fiber laser schemes. MATLAB® modelling and numerical computational methods are used throughout the book to simulate different fiber laser system configurations. This book will be highly desirable and beneficial for both academics and industry professionals to have ample examples of fiber laser approaches that are well thought out and fully integrated with the subjects covered in the text. This book is written to address these needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and simulation have proven invaluable to the design of various systems and planning of many experiments since the free-electron laser was invented in the 1970s. This thesis illustrates methods used for these tasks and for the validation and development of further theory. FEL systems and their components are described, briefly discussing how they fit into design considerations. Basic theory of FEL operation is reviewed, including the resonance condition, FEL wave and pendulum equations, and the concepts of undulator taper, extraction and beam quality. Two computer programs used for FEL simulation (FEL3D/FEL4D, developed at the Naval Postgraduate School, and Ginger, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) are discussed and compared, then applied to specific FEL cases. The cases studied serve to evaluate key performance characteristics of FELs. The final case study directly compares output from the two programs. In addition to this type of physics simulation, computer tools are also vital for component design. Relevant methods are illustrated using the example of an electrostatic cathode test cell and drawings made using the Los Alamos National Laboratories design tool, Poisson Superfish. After reviewing the principles involved and system constraints, a new test cell is designed for use with future NPS experiments. The effects of anodecathode spacing and anode aperture size are examined for two different anode configurations and recommendations are made for future design iterations.

This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master modeling and simulation using Modelica, the new powerful, highly versatile object-based modeling language Modelica, the new object-based software/hardware modeling language that is quickly gaining popularity around the world, offers an almost universal approach to high-level computational modeling and simulation. It handles a broad range of application domains, for example mechanics, electrical systems, control, and thermodynamics, and facilitates general notation as well as powerful abstractions and efficient implementations. Using the versatile Modelica language and its associated technology, this text presents an object-oriented, component-based approach that makes it possible for readers to quickly master the basics of computer-supported equation-based object-oriented (EOO) mathematical modeling and simulation. Throughout the text, Modelica is used to illustrate the various aspects of modeling and simulation. At the same time, a number of key concepts underlying the Modelica language are explained with the use of modeling and simulation examples. This book: Examines basic concepts such as systems, models, and simulations Guides readers through the Modelica language with the aid of several step-by-step examples Introduces the Modelica class concept and its use in graphical and textual modeling Explores modeling methodology for continuous, discrete, and hybrid systems Presents an overview of the Modelica Standard Library and key Modelica model libraries Readers will find plenty of examples of models that simulate distinct application domains as well as examples that combine several domains. All the examples and exercises in the text are available via DrModelica. This electronic self-teaching program, freely available on the text's companion website, guides readers from simple, introductory examples and exercises to more advanced ones. Written by the Director of the Open Source Modelica Consortium, Introduction to Modeling and Simulation of Technical and Physical Systems with Modelica is recommended for engineers and students interested in computer-aided design, modeling, simulation, and analysis of technical and natural systems. By building on basic concepts, the text is ideal for students who want to learn modeling, simulation, and object orientation.

Book excerpt: Under this MRI funded by HEL JTO and AFOSR, UCLA, in collaboration with Michigan Tech, Georgia Tech, MZA Associates Corporation, Tempest Technologies, Trex Enterprises Corporation, ATK Mission Research and the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), has established a comprehensive research program in high-performance control of high energy lasers (HEL), modeling and simulation of HEL, wavefront sensing, and target tracking. Under this program, researchers have developed adaptive filtering and control methods for wavefront prediction and correction and precise pointing of laser beams to compensate for the effects of atmospheric turbulence, platform vibration, target motion and sensor noise, all of which degrade the performance of laser weapons and communication systems. The research team for this multidisciplinary research initiative has made a comprehensive, integrated attack on the broad range of modeling and simulation, beam control, and target tracking problems that must be solved to achieve the potential of high energy laser systems. This report discusses the main results of the research.
