Primary data on Six Hundred and Thirteen (613) customers arriving at the case of study throughout the selected hours and days were collected, taken into consideration; the arrival, processing and departure times of each customer. The study then showed how the data collected at the respective dates possesses the Markovian properties, that is, Poisson and Exponential Distributions, hence the use of two “M’s” in the M/M/s queuing model. It determined the probabilistic analysis that the teller(s) is idle and also determined the probability of certain number of arrivals occurring at a given time.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess and model the stochastic nature of customer services provided by Commercial Bank of Ethiopia at Hawassa Branch. The study design adopted here was longitudinal. It considered the number of customers getting service in the Bank at time of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm for each working day from November 1-30, 2010.M/M/N model of queueing theory and non-linear regression models were used to analyze the data. Results from M/M/N indicated that the arrival rate was the highest in all weeks during the afternoon period from 2:00pm-4:00pm except Monday but it was the lowest during the lunch period from 11:30am-2:00pm. From steady-state probability of customers in the bank system, for every day throughout the month the maximum limiting probability existed before the number of customers becomes greater than the number of counter. The non-linear regression model output also supported the results of M/M/N model in predicting mean number of customers in the system, mean queue length, waiting time in queue and in the system. It is recommended that longitudinal studies need to be done to identify the busy and idle period within the month throughout the year.

This is due to the higher demand for a service compared to the supply. The high demand for the use of the banking sector has posed some significant problems which includes poor service facilities and delivery which remains an unavoidable cause to the wastage of customers' time, poor service pattern which in turn affects queue discipline, poor service delivery which has become an incentive for behavioral pattern of customers and poor service facilities which has affected the overall bank performance. The study reveals the application of queuing models in achieving customer satisfaction in United Bank for Africa (UBA), FUTA Akure branch. The analysis was conducted to compute different measures which include Traffic Intensity, expected number of customers, average waiting time and the result showed that server would be busy 93.13% of the time and idle 6.87% of the time when stable state is attained. Also, it reveals that on the average 15.64 customers would be available in the system while 14.89 customers would be available in the queue. Furthermore, it was seen that the average waiting time both in the queue and system are 0.6003hrs and 0.64hrs respectively. Finally, it was stated that the average probability of no one in the system and no queue are 0.1318 and 0.0741 respectively.
