Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to do an empirical study of the performance, reliability and traffic patterns of the Laboratory for Computer Science version two local area network. Performance data allows the comparison of the version two ring specifically and token ring networks in general with other local area network strategies, such as the Ethernet, to discover which type of local area network is decidedly better and why. Traffic patterns indicate how computer networks are used. Perfomance analysis can be performed both theoretically and experimentally. Mathematical analysis of a local area network is complex and only roughly approximates the behavior of a network. Mathematical analysis is useful for determining which systems might be usable, but does not give enough information to choose among the different systems. Network data refines mathematical models for network evaluation. Improved mathematical models make evaluation and simulation of networks before construction more practical. Empirical analysis determines the performance of an network. Not only can the network traffic be evaluated, but also network properties can be determined. Reported traffic on a local area network can improve mathematical models of traffic for theoretical evaluation and also suggest the traffic handling properties that a local area network and its hosts should have.

The most prominent example is the telephone network, in which the techniques used for transmission multiplex ing and switching have been designed for voice signals. However, one of the many effects of computers has been the growing volume of the sort of traffic that flows in networks composed of user terminals, processors, and peripherals. The characteristics of this data traffic and the associated perfor mance requirements are quite different from those of voice traffic. These differences, coupled with burgeoning digital technology, have engendered a whole new set of approaches to multiplexing and switching this traffic. The new techniques are the province of what has been loosely called computer communications networks. The subject of this book is the mathematical modeling and analysis of computer communications networks, that is to say, the multiplexing and switching techniques that have been developed for data traffic. The basis for many of the models that we shall consider is queueing theory, although a number of other disciplines are drawn on as well. The level at which this material is covered is that of a first-year graduate course. It is assumed that at the outset the student has had a good undergraduate course in probability and random processes of the sort that are more and more common among electrical engineering and computer science departments.

Book excerpt: The goal of the thesis is to design the star-based mesh topology by introducing multiple pan-coordinators (hub/switches) under a multipath-fading environment and to improve the data transaction rate of a network which usually gets worst when there is a single pan-coordinator for synchronization of devices in conventional mesh topology; also reduce the hop-count as least as possible.Most of the work has been done on NS-2 network simulator; therefore the research model which has been used here is a simulation model. Altogether 3 simulations have been done. The first scenario is done on a simplest mesh network with a single coordinator and a radio propagation model which has been used is two-ray ground reflection model. The second scenario simulation is similar to the first scenario but in-order to provide multi-path signal fading and highly congested environment the propagation model which has been used this time is shadowing model. The final simulation which has been done is of multiple-star based mesh topology it also uses the similar radio propagation model which has been defined for second scenario. An intensive performance measurement of all the three simulations has been done in terms of transactions made per-second, packet drop rate along with an analysis of packet drop. An hop-count is also measured between star and mesh topology.For multiple star based mesh topology it can be assumed if multiple stars with a routing capability can be used then nodes in a network will be synchronized or re-synchronized with least number of hops in the congested network with a near-by pan-coordinator (hub/switch). One of the major applications of this topology can be automobile manufacturing industry where alot of machines are installed in a congested network and monitoring of every area is mandatory for swift production.
