Book excerpt: Diesel engines are widely used because of their high efficiency and low “greenhouse gas” emission. The particulate matter (PM) emitted by a diesel engine is collected and then burned in a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Analysis and modeling works have been done in this research to provide insight on optimization of the DPF design and operating conditions to achieve low pressure drop across the filter to decrease fuel consumption and low peak temperature during regeneration to avoid filter melting, cracking, and/or catalyst deactivation. Limiting models of the 1-D two-channel DPF model are analyzed. Analytical predictions and physical insight on the filtration velocity, pressure drop, heat transfer, light-off and regeneration in a DPF are obtained. The hydraulic analysis enables an efficient optimization of the DPF that lead to a more uniform PM deposition profile and a decrease of the pressure drop. The heat transfer, light-off and regeneration analysis enable estimations of the DPF heat-up time, the speed and width of the temperature front, the light-off temperature and time, and the peak regeneration temperature. New DPF regeneration procedures are proposed to limit the maximum local temperature rise. In various cases a DPF is connected by a wide-angled cone (diffuser) to the engine exhaust pipe. A 2-D axisymmetric PM deposition and regeneration model is developed to investigate the impact of the inlet cone on the deposition rate and the regeneration temperature as well as on the transient inlet velocity distribution among the various DPF channels. The highest regeneration temperature and thermal stress when using an inlet cone may be quite higher than when it is absent. A major technological challenge in the regeneration of the ceramic cordierite filter is that a sudden decrease of the engine load, referred to as Drop to Idle (DTI), may create a transient temperature peak much higher than under either the initial or final stationary feed conditions. This excessive transient temperature rise may cause local melting or cracking of the ceramic filter. Suggestions on how to limit the peak temperature rise following a DTI are provided through numerous simulations of the 1-D and 2-D DPF regeneration models.

Since diesel power is a major source of energy for mining operations today, the adverse health effects of DPM are of a great concern. To thoroughly resolve DPM problems, it is critical that DPM propagation characteristics be understood to arrive at a sensible and practical method for addressing DPM-related issues. To achieve this, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is used to simulate DPM dispersion and to predict its concentration distribution. Industrial field studies were reconstructed to evaluate the possibility of different CFD models. Experiments were also carried out in the Missouri University of Science and Technology (MISSOURI S & T) Experimental Mine to validate the selected CFD model. Based on the verified CFD model, the DPM dispersion pattern in both a straight entry and a dead-end entry were studied. The effect of variables (for example, different mining operations, inclination of dead-end entry, buoyancy effects, orientation of the tailpipe and a vehicle's motion) on DPM distribution were systematically simulated to reveal high DPM regions in similar real mining scenarios. Different main airflow speeds, diesel particulate filter (DPF), and local ventilation devices were evaluated for effectiveness in clearing the DPM plume. This research can provide a means for identifying high DPM-level areas which can be used in miner health and safety training. Book excerpt: Air pollution from diesel combustion is a well-known and serious problem which adversely impacts human and environmental health throughout the world. One of the primary pollutants of concern from diesel combustion are the solid particles formed as a byproduct of the incomplete combustion of the diesel, also known as diesel particulate matter. As a result of the ubiquitous use of diesel-fired engines in urban environments, understanding the transport of diesel particulate matter from the exhaust is paramount in assessing human exposure to this toxic pollutant. Air dispersion modeling is one method to study how diesel particulate matter is transported and where the greatest risk of exposure can be found. Emissions of diesel particulate matter were modeled for the Portland metropolitan area by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) using the CALPUFF model. Diesel particulate matter was modeled in 2005 (PATA) and again in 2012 (PATS) by the DEQ. The purpose of this study is to update and enhance the model framework from these two studies to improve the current understanding of exposure to diesel particulate matter in the Portland area. Updates to the model framework include the implementation of a more current meteorological dataset and emissions inventory, and enhancements include using a higher resolution meteorology, and the addition of a new source category, truck distribution centers. Model concentrations from this study underwent a quality assurance (QA) and validation process using ambient monitored black carbon data from monitors in the Portland area. Results of the QA and validation process showed that the enhancements made for this study resulted in modeled concentrations that aligned closer to the monitored concentrations relative to the 2005 and 2012 studies. Using the updates to the model framework from this study, the DEQ can continue to develop future iterations of the PATS study to better understand diesel particulate matter exposure in the Portland area.

Much of the new knowledge has been gained by persons who were not trained in classical wood chemistry and there have not yet been many attempts to synthesize the knowledge into a corpus of systematic information. To bring this about the International Energy Agency's Forestry Energy collaboration, the Gas Research Institute, the National Research Council of Canada and the US Department of Energy jointly sponsored a conference on the Fundamentals of Thermochemical Biomass Conversion in Estes Park, Colorado which was held on October 18-22, 1982. The Conference, which was structured around invited plenary papers and contributions from researchers, served as the basis for the papers in this volume which reflect the substantial conclusions of the Conference.
