Download or read book Méthodes mathématiques et numériques pour les équations aux dérivées partielles written by CHASKALOVIC Joël and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Mathematics and Modern Art by : Claude Bruter
Download or read book Mathematics and Modern Art written by Claude Bruter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The link between mathematics and art remains as strong today as it was in the earliest instances of decorative and ritual art. Arts, architecture, music and painting have for a long time been sources of new developments in mathematics, and vice versa. Many great painters have seen no contradiction between artistic and mathematical endeavors, contributing to the progress of both, using mathematical principles to guide their visual creativity, enriching their visual environment with the new objects created by the mathematical science. Owing to the recent development of the so nice techniques for visualization, while mathematicians can better explore these new mathematical objects, artists can use them to emphasize their intrinsic beauty, and create quite new sceneries. This volume, the content of the first conference of the European Society for Mathematics and the Arts (ESMA), held in Paris in 2010, gives an overview on some significant and beautiful recent works where maths and art, including architecture and music, are interwoven. The book includes a wealth of mathematical illustrations from several basic mathematical fields including classical geometry, topology, differential geometry, dynamical systems. Here, artists and mathematicians alike elucidate the thought processes and the tools used to create their work

Book Synopsis A History of Folding in Mathematics by : Michael Friedman
Download or read book A History of Folding in Mathematics written by Michael Friedman and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-05-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is well known that the Delian problems are impossible to solve with a straightedge and compass – for example, it is impossible to construct a segment whose length is cube root of 2 with these instruments – the discovery of the Italian mathematician Margherita Beloch Piazzolla in 1934 that one can in fact construct a segment of length cube root of 2 with a single paper fold was completely ignored (till the end of the 1980s). This comes as no surprise, since with few exceptions paper folding was seldom considered as a mathematical practice, let alone as a mathematical procedure of inference or proof that could prompt novel mathematical discoveries. A few questions immediately arise: Why did paper folding become a non-instrument? What caused the marginalisation of this technique? And how was the mathematical knowledge, which was nevertheless transmitted and prompted by paper folding, later treated and conceptualised? Aiming to answer these questions, this volume provides, for the first time, an extensive historical study on the history of folding in mathematics, spanning from the 16th century to the 20th century, and offers a general study on the ways mathematical knowledge is marginalised, disappears, is ignored or becomes obsolete. In doing so, it makes a valuable contribution to the field of history and philosophy of science, particularly the history and philosophy of mathematics and is highly recommended for anyone interested in these topics.

Download or read book Conception systémique pour la conversion d'énergie électrique 2 : approche intégrée par optimisation written by ROBOAM Xavier and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Kinetic Theory and Swarming Tools to Modeling Complex Systems—Symmetry problems in the Science of Living Systems by : Nicola Bellomo
Download or read book Kinetic Theory and Swarming Tools to Modeling Complex Systems—Symmetry problems in the Science of Living Systems written by Nicola Bellomo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This MPDI book comprises a number of selected contributions to a Special Issue devoted to the modeling and simulation of living systems based on developments in kinetic mathematical tools. The focus is on a fascinating research field which cannot be tackled by the approach of the so-called hard sciences—specifically mathematics—without the invention of new methods in view of a new mathematical theory. The contents proposed by eight contributions witness the growing interest of scientists this field. The first contribution is an editorial paper which presents the motivations for studying the mathematics and physics of living systems within the framework an interdisciplinary approach, where mathematics and physics interact with specific fields of the class of systems object of modeling and simulations. The different contributions refer to economy, collective learning, cell motion, vehicular traffic, crowd dynamics, and social swarms. The key problem towards modeling consists in capturing the complexity features of living systems. All articles refer to large systems of interaction living entities and follow, towards modeling, a common rationale which consists firstly in representing the system by a probability distribution over the microscopic state of the said entities, secondly, in deriving a general mathematical structure deemed to provide the conceptual basis for the derivation of models and, finally, in implementing the said structure by models of interactions at the microscopic scale. Therefore, the modeling approach transfers the dynamics at the low scale to collective behaviors. Interactions are modeled by theoretical tools of stochastic game theory. Overall, the interested reader will find, in the contents, a forward look comprising various research perspectives and issues, followed by hints on to tackle these.
