Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conducting polymers have been extensively investigated in a wide range of applications due to their ability to achieve near metallic conductivity while possessing the flexibility and processability of traditional polymers. However, interchain and solid-state effects have made direct investigation of the polymer systems difficult. A series of systematically varied model compounds have been designed to provide detailed information about through-chain charge transport in well-defined oligothiophenes. Our design incorporates two metal binding pockets at either end of an oligothiophene bridge to investigate the interaction of redox centers and charge transport properties between conducting polymers and bound transition metal centers. Synthesis, characterization, electrochemistry, and detailed EPR investigations of this new series of oligothiophene model compounds and the analogous mononuclear compounds will be discussed herein. Conjugated polymer matrices possess a large number of available oxidation states making them an attractive choice for use as redox-active ligands. This variety of oxidation states offers a means to easily tune the amount of electron density on a metal center and consequently affect the binding of an additional ligand. Our approach utilizes conducting metallopolymers with metal complexes synthetically incorporated directly into the conducting polymer backbone. The redox-dependent properties of this class of materials and their development as small molecule storage and delivery systems have been explored utilizing a variety of novel electropolymerizable transition metal complexes. The design, synthesis, characterization, and redox-affected properties of the monomers, corresponding conducting metallopolymers, and model complexes are discussed. The tub-shaped dibenzo[a, e]cyclooctatetraene molecule undergoes a large change in geometry upon reduction to form the planar aromatic species. Herein, we seek to prepare and investigate a supramolecular assembly utilizing this redox-active molecule. In contrast to electrochemically active frameworks where redox changes occur at the metal centers, incorporation of a functionalized dibenzo[a, e]cyclooctatetraene ligand into an assembly has the potential to result in a redox-active framework. Not only would the redox-activity occur at the organic bridge, but reduction of the system should result in a large geometry change.
Book Synopsis Conducting Metallopolymers with Tridentate Ligands and Coordination Chemistry with Corresponding Model Compounds by : Şeyma Keskin
Download or read book Conducting Metallopolymers with Tridentate Ligands and Coordination Chemistry with Corresponding Model Compounds written by Şeyma Keskin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conducting polymers that contain metals are remarkable materials, because they have the properties of both organic backbones and metals. Depending on the position of the metal relative to the conjugated backbone, i.e. attached to or directly in the backbone, these two can couple resulting in advancement of the functionality and therefore potential applications of these types of materials. Complexes of tridentate ligands with donor atoms such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur also have a wide variety of applications. In addition, complexes of tridentate ligands have advantages of stability and control of electron density by variation of donor atoms. Therefore, conjugated polymers with tridentate ligand units will have promise for various applications and advantages in their designs. Complexes of PNP ligand with molybdenum and carbonyl ancillary ligands were synthesized and characterized. Isomerization and conversion reactions between them were investigated as well as the coordination modes. Many types of PNP ligands have been studied in the literature because the hemilabile property of the nitrogen atom promotes some catalytic reactions and gives different coordination geometries. Conducting polymers can be used as redox-active ligands and they can be used to control electron density on the metal attached to them. Synthesis and characterization of a novel polymerizable ligand 3,5-bis-EDOT-N,N-bis[2-diphenylphosphinoethyl]aniline was achieved. Related molybdenum complexes with ancillary ligands as carbonyls were also synthesized and characterized. Monomer complexes and the free ligand were electropolymerized and studied. Tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) chloride and analogous complexes have been studied extensively in the literature due to their luminescent and photochemical properties, and excited state lifetimes. Conducting polymers with similar ruthenium groups have been investigated for various applications. Synthesis of four ruthenium complexes with the polymerizable ligand 2,6-Bis[4-[2-(3,4-diethylenedioxy)thiophene]pyrazol-1-yl]pyridine and four different bidentate ligands were reproduced; electropolymerizations of the complexes were achieved; electrochemical, UV-Vis and luminescence studies were performed and discussed. Various complexes of copper, silver, platinum, and palladium with nitrogen and phosphorus donors have been reported for their luminescence behavior as well as their interesting structures. Model complexes of these metals with N,N-bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl]phenyl-amine (a PNP ligand) have been synthesized and characterized. Absorption and luminescence behaviors as well as the coordination modes were investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue is one of the first for the new MDPI flagship journal Chemistry (ISSN 2624-8549) which has a broad remit for publishing original research in all areas of chemistry. The theme of this issue is Supramolecular Chemistry in the 3rd Millennium and I am sure that this topic will attract many exciting contributions. We chose this topic because it encompasses the unity of contemporary pluridisciplinary science, in which organic, inorganic, physical and theoretical chemists work together with molecular biologists and physicists to develop a systems-level understanding of molecular interactions. The description of supramolecular chemistry as 'chemistry beyond the molecule' (Jean-Marie Lehn, Nobel Lecture and Gautam R. Desiraju, Nature, 2001, 412, 397) addresses the wide variety of weak, non-covalent interactions that are the basis for the assembly of supramolecular architectures, molecular receptors and molecular recognition, programed molecular systems, dynamic combinatorial libraries, coordination networks and functional supramolecular materials. We welcome submissions from all disciplines involved in this exciting and evolving area of science.
Book Synopsis Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers by : Masayoshi Higuchi
Download or read book Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers written by Masayoshi Higuchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the synthesis, electrochemical and photochemical properties, and device applications of metallo-supramolecular polymers, new kinds of polymers synthesized by the complexation of metal ions and organic ditopic ligands. Their electrochemical and photochemical properties are also interesting and much different from conventional organic polymers. The properties come from the electronic intra-chain interaction between the metal ions and the ligands in the polymer chain. In this book, for example, the electrochromism that the Fe(II)-based metallo-supramolecular polymer exhibits is described: the blue color of the polymer film disappears by the electrochemical oxidation of Fe(II) ions to Fe(III) and the colorless film becomes blue again by the electrochemical reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). The electrochromism is explained by the disappearance/appearance of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption. The electrochromic properties are applicable to display devices such as electronic paper and smart windows.

Book Synopsis Metal Catalysts in Olefin Polymerization by : Zhibin Guan
Download or read book Metal Catalysts in Olefin Polymerization written by Zhibin Guan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyolefin is a major industry that is important for our economy and impacts every aspect of our lives. The discovery of new transition metal-based catalysts is one of the driving forces for the further advancement of this field. Whereas the classical heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts and homogeneous early transition metal metallocene catalysts remain the workhorses of the polyolefin industry, in roughly the last decade, tremendous progress has been made in developing non-metallocene-based olefin polymerization catalysts. Particularly, the discovery of late transition metal-based olefin polymerization catalysts heralds a new era for this field. These late transition metal complexes not only exhibit high activities rivaling their early metal counterparts, but more importantly they offer unique properties for polymer architectural control and copolymerization with polar olefins. In this book, the most recent major breakthroughs in the development of new olefin polymerization catalysts, including early metal metallocene and non-metallocene complexes and late transition metal complexes, are discussed by leading experts. The authors highlight the most important discoveries in catalysts and their applications in designing new polyolefin-based functional materials.
Book Synopsis Reaction Mechanisms in Carbon Dioxide Conversion by : Michele Aresta
Download or read book Reaction Mechanisms in Carbon Dioxide Conversion written by Michele Aresta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-07 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of the reaction mechanisms relevant to a number of processes in which CO2 is converted into valuable products. Several different processes are considered that convert CO2 either in specialty chemicals or in bulk products or fuels. For each reaction, the mechanism is discussed and the assessed steps besides the dark sites of the reaction pathway are highlighted. From the insertion of CO2 into E-X bonds to the reduction of CO2 to CO or other C1 molecules or else to C2 or Cn molecules, the reactions are analysed in order to highlight the known and obscure reaction steps. Besides well known reaction mechanisms and energy profiles, several lesser known situations are discussed. Advancing knowledge of the latter would help to develop efficient routes for the conversion of CO2 into valuable products useful either in the chemical or in the energy industry. The content of this book is quite different from other books reporting the use of CO2. On account of its clear presentation, “Reaction Mechanisms in Carbon Dioxide Conversion” targets in particular researchers, teachers and PhD students.

Book Synopsis Plasma Catalysis by : Annemie Bogaerts
Download or read book Plasma Catalysis written by Annemie Bogaerts and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma catalysis is gaining increasing interest for various gas conversion applications, such as CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals and fuels, N2 fixation for the synthesis of NH3 or NOx, methane conversion into higher hydrocarbons or oxygenates. It is also widely used for air pollution control (e.g., VOC remediation). Plasma catalysis allows thermodynamically difficult reactions to proceed at ambient pressure and temperature, due to activation of the gas molecules by energetic electrons created in the plasma. However, plasma is very reactive but not selective, and thus a catalyst is needed to improve the selectivity. In spite of the growing interest in plasma catalysis, the underlying mechanisms of the (possible) synergy between plasma and catalyst are not yet fully understood. Indeed, plasma catalysis is quite complicated, as the plasma will affect the catalyst and vice versa. Moreover, due to the reactive plasma environment, the most suitable catalysts will probably be different from thermal catalysts. More research is needed to better understand the plasma–catalyst interactions, in order to further improve the applications.
