Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fine, fascinating book. John S. Sledge introduces us to four centuries worth of heroes and rogues on one incredible American river.” —Winston Groom, New York Times–bestselling author of Forrest Gump The Mobile River presents the first-ever narrative history of this important American watercourse. Inspired by the venerable Rivers of America series, John S. Sledge weaves chronological and thematic elements with personal experiences and more than sixty color and black-and-white images for a rich and rewarding read. Previous historians have paid copious attention to the other rivers that make up the Mobile’s basin, but the namesake stream along with its majestic delta and beautiful bay have been strangely neglected. In an attempt to redress the imbalance, Sledge launches this book with a first-person river tour by “haul-ass boat.” Along the way he highlights the four diverse personalities of this short stream—upland hardwood forest, upper swamp, lower swamp, and harbor. In the historical saga that follows, readers learn about colonial forts, international treaties, bloody massacres, and thundering naval battles, as well as what the Mobile River’s inhabitants ate and how they dressed through time. A barge load of colorful characters is introduced, including Native American warriors, French diplomats, British cartographers, Spanish tavern keepers, Creole women, steamboat captains, African slaves, Civil War generals and admirals, Apache prisoners, hydraulic engineers, stevedores, banana importers, Rosie Riveters, and even a few river rats subsisting off the grid—all of them actors in a uniquely American pageant of conflict, struggle, and endless opportunity along a river that gave a city its name. “Sledge brilliantly explores the myriad ways human history has entwined with the Mobile River.” —Gregory A. Waselkov, author of A Conquering Spirit

Confederate general Dabney Maury fought to protect the city and its citizens who refused to leave, such as Octavia LeVert and Augusta Evans. Union admiral Farragut and General Canby slowly starved the city, knowing that the fall of Mobile could end the war. Author Paula Webb details the experiences of the ordeal and the defeat of a Confederate city that echoed through the entire country.

Book excerpt: "Southern Footprints celebrates the more than fifty years of research projects carried out by University of South Alabama archaeologists and students as well as staff at the Center for Archaeological Studies in Mobile. Their dynamic work has been public facing through programs and exhibits curated at the University of South Alabama Archaeology Museum. Archaeologists Gregory A. Waselkov, former director of the Center, and Philip J. Carr, current director of the Center, present the "greatest hits" that have transformed knowledge of human history on the Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coast from the Ice Age until recently. Of the hundreds of archaeological sites, premiere historic sites, such as Old Mobile and Holy Ground, are now archaeological preserves. Essays are arranged chronologically overall and survey the history and archaeology of a wide range of significant sites such as the Gulf Shores canoe canal, Bottle Creek Mounds, Old Mobile, Fort Mims, Spanish Fort, Spring Hill College, and Mobile River Bridge. Waselkov and Carr take care to acknowledge in these stories populations who are typically underdocumented and recognize the contributions of Native Americans and African Americans as uncovered through archaeology. While documenting all material culture and places that have been saved and preserved, they also note the dire impacts of climate change, environmental disasters, development, and neglect and share their urgency to protect these areas of shared history. Copious color photographs showcase the archaeology as it unfolded, often with the help of dedicated volunteers. Southern Footprints will serve as an indispensable reference on the rich Gulf heritage for all to appreciate"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book documents the maritime history and the 2018/2019 archaeological fieldwork and laboratory and historical research to identify the wreck of notorious schooner Clotilda in Mobile Bay. Clotilda was owned by Alabama businessman Thomas Meaher, who, on a dare, equipped it to carry captured Africans from what is now Benin and bring them to Alabama in 1860, some fifty years after the import of the enslaved was banned. The boat carried perhaps 110 Africans, and, on approaching Mobile Bay, the captives were unloaded and dispersed by river steamer/s to plantations upriver. To hide the evidence, Clotilda was set afire and sunk. Apparently, the site of the wreck was an open secret but lost from memory for a time. Various surveys through the years failed to locate the ship. In 2018, Al.com reporter Ben Raines identified a shipwreck near Twelvemile Island, and the story attracted international attention. Researcher partners, including Delgado and coauthors in the crew, determined that this was not the Clotilda. In 2019, on another investigative mission to locate the Clotilda, Delgado and crew compared the remains of a schooner and determined that it was the Clotilda. The Alabama Historical Commission and the descendent community of Africatown, where survivors of the Clotilda made their lives post-Emancipation, are making plans for commemoration of the site and the remains of the ship, if it is possible to salvage and preserve out of water. The book takes two tacks. First it serves as a nautical biography of Clotilda. After reviewing the maritime trade in and out of Mobile Bay, it places the Clotilda within the larger landscape of American and Gulf of Mexico schooners and covers its career before being used as a slave ship. Delgado et al. reconstruct Clotilda's likely appearance and characteristics. The second tack is the archaeological assessment of the wreck. The book also places the wreck within the context of a ship's graveyard in a "back water" of the Mobile River. Delgado et al. discuss the various searches for Clotilda. Detailing of the forensic and other analyses shows how those involved concluded that this wreck was indeed the Clotilda"--

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mobile: Her Trade, Commerce and Industries, 1883-4: Manufacturing Advantages, Business and Transportation Facilities; Together With Sketches of the Principal Business Houses and Manufacturing Concerns in the "Gulf City;" Historical and Descriptive Review For unimproved land, the average price is not over an acre; for im proved land, it ranges from $1 to $40, about $5 being the average price. The state possesses no land of any kind, but the United States still holds acres in the state, which is selling very rapidly, especially to the lumbermen. The government has sold more land in Alabama during the last three years than during the whole previous 20. Of the government land acres are classed as mineral lands, and such lands were, for a long time, held for sale at high prices; but during the last session of Congress a bill was passed differently classifying these mineral lands, so that they can be sold at the ordinary rate of an acre, thus bringing them into market, and allowing their purchase and development. The railroads also own acres of land within 15 miles of their lines, which they are selling at from $1 to $3 per acre, except the mineral land.
