Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.

Book excerpt: The advantages of composite materials include a high specific strength and stiffness, formability, and a comparative resistance to fatigue cracking and corrosion. However, not forsaking these advantages, composite materials are prone to a wide range of defects and damage that can significantly reduce the residual strength and stiffness of a structure or result in unfavorable load paths. Emphasizing defect identification and restitution, Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures explains how defects and damage in composite materials and structures impact composite component performance. Providing ready access to an extensive, descriptive list of defects and damage types, this must-have reference: Examines defect criticality in composite structures Recommends repair actions to restore structural integrity Discusses failure modes and mechanisms of composites due to defects Reviews NDI processes for finding and identifying defects in composite materials Relating defect detection methods to defect type, the author merges his experience in the field of in-service activities for composite airframe maintenance and repair with indispensable reports and articles on defects and damage in advanced composite materials from the last 50 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of fiber orientation and the location of a delamination within the laminate on the delamination behavior under fatigue loading has not yet been considered sufficiently. In this study, the growth of delaminations between plies of different fiber orientation and on different locations over the thickness of the laminate under cyclic Mode II loading was characterized using the end-notched flexure (ENF) test. Laminates made of HTA/6376, a toughened carbon/epoxy, with unidirectional and quasi-isotropic layups were tested. Experiments were performed in stroke control at a frequency of 5 Hz and a displacement ratio of 0.1. Delamination growth per fatigue loading cycle, da/dN, was related to the strain energy release rate (SERR) GII associated with the Mode II (forward shear) loading. G was determined by an experimental compliance calibration procedure, correlating observed crack length with measured specimen compliance. A complete characterization of the delamination growth from the threshold of detectability to unstable delamination growth is given. A Paris law was fitted to the data which describes the experimental results rather well. It was observed that delamination growth always occurred along plies of 0° orientation. Depending on the specimens' lay up and the location of the crack initiation insert, intralaminar crack growth occurred until the crack reached the next 0° ply. Delaminations then propagated from this point. Due to the coupling of deformation modes and the rather complex damage pattern, a mixed mode loading may occur. The resulting delamination growth curves were found to lie within or to the right (i.e., delamination growth is slower for a given SERR) of the scatter band found for the specimens with midplane delamination and 0° bounding plies, with only few exceptions. Specimens with delaminations close to the laminate's surface did not fail by delamination from the insert but due to bending or interlaminar shear close to the laminate midplane. An analytical expression for the distribution of the strain energy release rate, II, over the thickness of the specimen is derived which, within the rather large scatter that was observed, characterizes the SERR determined experimentally fairly well. The experimental results suggest that it may be sufficient to characterize delamination propagation behavior under cyclic Mode II loading in carbon/epoxy utilizing specimens with unidirectional layup and midplane delaminations. However, further investigations are needed to confirm this conclusion.

Book excerpt: Delamination crack growth in a unidirectional composite laminate under static and fatigue loading conditions is investigated. An experimental program was performed to elucidate failure mechanisms and to characterize the growth rate of the delamination crack. Analytical modeling, based on microscopic observation, is conducted by using an advanced singular finite element method of the hybrid-stress model formulated through the minimum complementary energy principle. Solutions obtained from the analysis probe the fundamental nature of the problem. Implications of the results on the applicability of the classical laminate theory are discussed. Using a mixed-mode failure criterion, the delamination growth under a monotonically increasing load may be predicted satisfactorily. The rate of delamination crack propagation under fatigue loading is found to be related directly to the amplitudes of cyclic opening and shearing mode stress intensity factors by a power law relationship. The study elucidates many salient features of the problem, provides insight to the basic nature of the delamination failure behavior, and should be of practical importance in the design and testing of composite materials.

Delamination is the most important damage mechanisms for these materials. In many composite components delaminations grow under a varying mode mix that depends on the crack length. It is important to develop methods that can characterise subcritical, mixed-mode growth in fatigue delamination. The objective of this investigation is the characterisation of variable mixed-mode fatigue delamination in composite laminates. A mixed-mode fatigue delamination model is proposed. Opposite to literature mixed-mode fatigue delamination models, the proposed model assumes a non-monotonic variation of the propagation parameters with the mode mix. The mixed-mode end load split (MMELS) test, in which the propagation mode varies with the crack extent, is analysed. Two theoretical approaches present in the literature are considered. However, the resulting expressions are not equivalent and a more accurate alternative analysis is carried out based on the virtual crack closure technique. Significant findings are found for materials characterisation.
