In Betrayed by Nature, research scientist and lecturer Robin Hesketh demystifies the nature of cancer. Hesketh provides a concise and comprehensive history of both the science and the medical advances made over the decades. He takes the reader on a riveting tour of human biology; he explains how cancers start, what is meant by ‘a mutation', and how mutations can make cells grow abnormally and spread around our bodies. Drawing on the latest discoveries from the Human Genome Project, Hesketh reveals the strides being made in understanding this malevolent disease and makes accessible the science of today's treatments. Betrayed by Nature looks forward to the day when many cancers can be treated readily and effectively. With cancer afflicting one in three people worldwide, this is an illuminating and optimistic look at the past, present, and future of cancer.

Book excerpt: Data driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in digital pathology, radiology, and dermatology is very promising. In specific cases, for example, Deep Learning (DL), even exceeding human performance. However, in the context of medicine it is important for a human expert to verify the outcome. Consequently, there is a need for transparency and re-traceability of state-of-the-art solutions to make them usable for ethical responsible medical decision support. Moreover, big data is required for training, covering a wide spectrum of a variety of human diseases in different organ systems. These data sets must meet top-quality and regulatory criteria and must be well annotated for ML at patient-, sample-, and image-level. Here biobanks play a central and future role in providing large collections of high-quality, well-annotated samples and data. The main challenges are finding biobanks containing ‘‘fit-for-purpose’’ samples, providing quality related meta-data, gaining access to standardized medical data and annotations, and mass scanning of whole slides including efficient data management solutions.

Book excerpt: Shards of Time tells the story of Mita Zara, a young girl from Cebu, Philippines whose father was arrested as a political detainee and sent to Fort Bonifacio prison during the Martial Law era. As she and her siblings scattered to the four winds, the core of their family life seemed irreparably broken by a single incident. As her siblings began to drift and her family crumbled Mita found herself all alone in an uncertain world where the rules had changed and nothing would ever be the same again. Traumatized and disillusioned by life's events, she tried to run away to the ends of the earth seeking geographic fixes half a world away, vainly hoping for new beginnings to bury the past. Continually haunted by misgivings and memories, she realized things are not so easily forgotten. Discovering her childhood would follow her wherever she went, she realized she'd had fallen into a pattern of repeating her past mistakes, and she has no choice but to turn and face her demons. Shards of Time is a family saga that spells unconditional love, voicing the sentiments of despair, and most of all unlocking the heart to forgive. Its' a story of father and daughter that spans decades, marriages, and continents. Guided by dreams and intuition, Mita conquers her fears returning to the island of her birth where she finds humility, healing and redemption.

This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reactive scattering for H- + H2 and H+ + H2 and its isotopologues were investigated using different methods. The studies aimed at providing insights into elementary reactions, and go beyond these to more complexchemical reactions. By comparison of the reaction probabilities of H+ + H2 using adiabatic and non-adiabatic methods, it was found that, at low collision energies, the reaction preferentially occurs adiabatically, but at higher collision energies non-adiabatic effects should be taken into account. For H- + H2 and its isotopologues, we can see that, at low collision energies, the reaction probabilities and reaction cross section using SM-PES and AY-PES are very similar but different from PS-PES. The reaction cross sections investigated with quasi-classical trajectoriesare higher than those calculated with quantum wavepackets. For the collision H- and D- with HD, the main reaction path ways are different with the different collision energies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the perfect book for your child! It has colorful and fun illustrations. Mitochondrial disease affects people of all ages. Often, children benefit from books which explain symptoms and feelings in clear wording and bright photos. 'My Mighty Mito' has space for your child to personalize the book in the front as well as room for your child to write his/her own feelings and symptoms to help them to know that other children go through similar experiences and that they are not alone. 'Mighty Mito' is what Joshua Koscinski has called his mitochondria since he was a young child. Joshua is a thirteen year old who lives daily with the difficult symptoms and effects of mitochondrial disease. His desire is to help other children to know there are more kids like them out there and to not feel afraid. Often children with special needs benefit from 'social stories' or stories that help them to understand what is happening to them. For Joshua, writing is a way to let other children know that they are amazing! Cristy Balcells, founder of MitoAction.org and author of Living Well with Mitochondrial Disease wrote the foreward for our book. We hope you love reading it as much as we loved writing it. Joshua lives with mitochondrial disease, autism, Ehlers-Danlos, Sensory Processing Disorder, speech and motor delays, and eosinophilic esophagitis. When he is unable to walk, Joshua uses his granny smith apple wheelchair. He is home schooled since mitochondrial disease severely limits his energy level. Joshua is fed via a GJ tube (gastrojejunostomy tube) since his stomach doesn't function effectively. He is hyper-sensitive to heat and humidity, which is common in those with mitochondrial disease. Cara Koscinski, MOT, OTR/L (known as The Pocket Occupational Therapist) is Joshua's mother. She has authored four books and travels throughout the US to help educate therapists, parents, and teachers about working with children who have special needs. Visit her website at www.PocketOT.com for more information. Joshua has been a guest on the Anderson Cooper daytime talk show, on the cover of AutismAsperger's Digest, and AutismFile magazines. He is an advocate for other children who have mitochondrial disease.
