Building on medieval drama, vernacular theatre and classical drama, it spread around Europe. It was often used as a means to educate young boys in Latin, in acting and in moral issues. Comedies, tragedies and mixed forms were written. The Societas Jesu employed Latin drama in their education and public relations on a large scale. They had borrowed the concept of this drama from the humanist and Protestant gymnasia, and perfected it to a multi media show. However, the genre does not receive the attention that it deserves. This essay collection is intimately invested in the debates around the posthuman and the critical posthumanities within a feminist critical-theoretical framework. In this posthumanist light, science fiction as a genre allows for new imaginings of human-technological relations, while it can also be the site of a critique of human exceptionalism and essentialism. In this way, science fiction affords unique opportunities for the scholarly investigation of the relevance and relative applicability of specific posthumanist themes and questions in a particularly rich and wide-ranging popular cultural field of production. One of the reasons for this suitability is the genre's historically longstanding relationship with the critical investigation of gender, specifically the position and relative empowerment of women. The original analyses presented here pay close attention to audiovisual style (including game mechanics), facilitating the critical interrogation of the issues and questions around posthumanism. Where typically the mention of SF in the posthumanist context calls to mind a whole set of (often clichéd) tropes-the cyborg, technologically augmented bodies, AI subjectivities, etc.-this volume's thirteen chapters analyze specific examples of contemporary SF cinema that engage in meaningful ways with the burgeoning field of critical posthumanism, and that utilize such films to interrogate posthumanist and feminist as well as humanistic ideas.

Habitualmente este tipo de relato ha sido reducido a una historia anecdótica, un pretexto introspectivo o un recurso semiótico, cuando no a una falacia sensacionalista. Tras una amplia introducción encaminada a comprender los factores que dificultan la comprensión del mito en nuestra cultura contemporánea (globalización, relativismo e inmanencia), este libro profundiza en la noción de trascendencia sobrenatural sagrada, categoría basilar para una correcta distinción entre el mito y otros correlatos del imaginario: esoterismo, fantasía, magia, ciencia ficción. Seguidamente, este volumen ofrece un estudio del mito desde dentro del mito. Sostiene que el mito es un relato funcional, simbólico y temático de acontecimientos extraordinarios con referente trascendente sobrenatural sagrado, carentes, en principio, de testimonio histórico, y remitentes a una cosmogonía o una escatología individuales o colectivas, pero siempre absolutas. La Mitocrítica cultural aquí defendida sale así al paso de la reflexión académica que ha confundido el mito con otros conceptos anejos pero distintos (símbolo, tema, arquetipo, prototipo, héroe) y recusa su utilización servil por otras ciencias (antropología, sociología, política, psicoanálisis). Lejos de ser ignoradas, estas disciplinas científicas y sus respectivas técnicas han sido puestas a contribución para comprender los diversos procesos de mitificación y desmitificación operados en nuestro tiempo, tanto sobre auténticos personajes míticos como sobre personajes históricos y personajes literarios supuestamente mitológicos. La novedad de esta propuesta interdisciplinar no es abordada en abstracto, sino contrastada a la luz de breves o extensos análisis de numerosos textos literarios traídos a colación entre las principales mitologías de nuestro entorno cultural (grecolatinas, bíblicas, nórdicas, celtas, eslavas, etcétera). Esta primera teoría omnicomprensiva del mito proporciona además una metodología, una hermenéutica y una epistemología: da pautas claras para localizar el mito en cualquier relato mítico, propone claves heurísticas para su interpretación objetiva y provee la mitocrítica de unas bases sólidas para reivindicarse como ciencia autónoma.

The book opens with two theoretical essays on the subject of subversive tendencies and myth reinvention in the contemporary novel. From there, it moves on to the analysis of essential texts. Firstly, classical myths in works by authors such as André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino or Christa Wolf (for instance, Theseus, Oedipus or Medea) are discussed. Then, myths of biblical origin – such as the Flood or the Golem – are revisited in the work of Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes and Cynthia Ozick. A further section is concerned with the place of modern myths (Faust, the ghost, Ophelia…) in the fiction of Günter Grass, Paul Auster, or Clara Janés. The contributors have also delved into the relationship between myth and art – especially in the discourse of contemporary advertising, painting and cinema – and myth’s intercultural dimensions: hybridity in the Latin American novels of Augusto Roa Bastos and Carlos Fuentes, and in the Hindu-themed novels of Bharati Mukherjee. Abren el libro dos estudios teóricos sobre la tendencia subversiva y la reinvención de mitos en la actualidad. Prosigue el análisis de diversos textos de primera importancia. En primer lugar se revisan los mitos clásicos en autores como André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino o Christa Wolf (p. ej., Teseo, Edipo, Medea). En segundo lugar, la reescritura de los mitos bíblicos según Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes o Cynthia Ozick (p. ej., el diluvio o el Golem).
