Book excerpt: “A compelling addition to the history of capitalism . . . reminds us that globalization’s current realities have deep roots in the early modern era.” —Margaret Newell, author of Brethren by Nature: New England Indians, Colonists, and the Origins of American Slavery When we talk about the economy nowadays, “the market” is usually just an abstraction, but historically, the exchange of goods was tied to a particular place. Capitalism has gradually eroded this connection to create our current global trading systems. In Trading Spaces, Emma Hart argues that Britain’s colonization of North America was a key moment in the market’s shift from place to idea, with major consequences for the character of the American economy. Hart’s book takes in the shops, auction sites, wharves, taverns, fairs, and homes of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century America—places where new mechanisms and conventions of trade arose as Europeans re-created or adapted continental methods to new surroundings. Since those earlier conventions tended to rely on regulation more than their colonial offspring did, what emerged in early America was a less fettered brand of capitalism. By the nineteenth century this had evolved into a market economy that would not look too foreign to contemporary Americans. To tell this complex transnational story of how our markets came to be, Hart looks back further than most historians of US capitalism, rooting these markets in the norms of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. Perhaps most important, this is not a story of specific commodity markets over time but rather a history of the trading spaces themselves: the physical sites in which the grubby work of commerce occurred and where the market itself was born. “Providing detailed examination of evidence from sources such as newspapers, broadsides, court testimonies, maps, and private journals, Hart convincingly recreates what that early modern trading world looked like at the ground level, from the colonial era through the early American republic.” —Journal of British Studies “Her work starts a conversation that one hopes others will continue.” —The Journal of Southern History

Book excerpt: Broke, friendless, and career in freefall--will solving a murder get her life back on track? An Uncollected Death introduces Charlotte Anthony, a forty-something divorcée, single mother and magazine editor who suddenly finds herself an empty-nester, unemployed, and on the verge of bankruptcy. She gratefully takes the job of editing the journals of Olivia Bernadin, a long-lost nouveau roman author. Things rapidly deteriorate, however, when she finds Olivia left for dead the first day on the job--and herself a suspect in the crime. Charlotte turns amateur detective as she works out cryptic clues to find Olivia's hidden journals and to clear herself of suspicion, all while reinventing her life by downsizing to a tiny apartment in the small college town of Elm Grove, Indiana. But efficient and independent Charlotte must also learn to accept the help of a new group of friends when she finds herself threatened by criminals who will stop at nothing--not even murder--to get their hands on something of immense value hidden within Olivia's hoard of collectibles. The Charlotte Anthony novels are traditional, character-driven mysteries whose overarching theme is how the past informs the present, and how even a small town in the American Midwest can be connected to a much larger world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2011, Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind: A Bestseller's Odyssey from Atlanta to Hollywood presented the first comprehensive overview of how the iconic novel became an international phenomenon that has managed to sustain the public's interest for more than eighty-five years. Various Mitchell biographies and several compilations of her letters told part of the story, but until 2011, no single source had revealed the full saga. Now updated with two new chapters that bring the saga into 2021, this entertaining account of a literary and pop culture phenomenon tells how Mitchell's book was developed, marketed, distributed, and otherwise groomed for success in the 1930s—and the savvy measures taken since then by the author, her publisher, and her estate to ensure its longevity.

Book excerpt: Popular casebook author and bar review lecturer Richard Freer makes the complex principles of civil procedure accessible for students and practitioners in this treatise. Filled with hundreds of examples, the book integrates legal doctrine with factual analysis. The book breaks the doctrines of civil procedure into easy-to-understand components, and then brings them together to show how they form a comprehensive body of law. As stated by one procedure scholar, this book “is a key reference not only for students, but also for any lawyer or scholar looking for a starting point to their research on procedure and jurisdiction. The latest edition is always on my bookshelf.” New to the 5th Edition: The Supreme Court’s most recent decision on specific personal jurisdiction, Ford Motor Company, and how it flows from the Court’s restriction of general personal jurisdiction Detailed analysis of all recent amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Emerging law on class actions, including justiciability, ascertainability, cy pres, and issue certification Detailed treatment of remedies, including provisional remedies The Court’s 2020 recognition of “defense preclusion” Professors and students will benefit from: “Defining the Issue,” a section that opens each chapter, putting material into context and making connections to related areas of procedure and jurisdiction law Analytical frameworks to synthesize key subject areas
