Ausgehend von begrifflichen Klärungen werden zunächst grundlegende theoretische Ansätze zur Motivationsforschung erläutert. Die Einstellung der Mitarbeiter zur Arbeit, deren zentrale und peripheren Motive werden dargelegt und diskutiert, um dann der Frage nachzuspüren, ob und in welchem Umfang typische Beispiele des Berufsalltag das Arbeits- und Leistungsverhalten von Mitarbeitern beeinflussen. Die Beispiele sind so gewählt, dass sie nach meiner Auffassung in ihrer Bedeutung auch Gewicht und Reihenfolge widerspiegeln. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bildet die Untersuchung der vielschichtigen Gründe für die momentan zu beobachtenden Motivationskrise der Beschäftigten am Arbeitsplatz. Diesem Zerfall der Mitarbeitermotivation im Berufsalltag wird umfassend nachgegangen. Die jährlichen Wachstumsraten scheinen über Fortschritt, Wohlstand und Beschäftigung, über Glück und Unglück einer Gesellschaft zu entscheiden. Ausgehend von der Überlegung, dass die vor allem seit der Jahrtausendwende klar und bewusst zu Tage tretende wirtschaftlichgesellschaftliche Stagnation Deutschlands ein zentraler Baustein dieser Motivationskrise sein kann, werden zunächst die hierfür verantwortlichen Gründe aufgezeigt. Die sich anschließende Auseinandersetzung befasst sich mit dem Phänomen „Negativität“ als wahrzunehmende Reaktion nicht nur auf die gegenwärtige Konjunktur- und Strukturkrise, sondern auch auf die aktuell gesellschaftspolitischen Umbrüche, wie sie sich zum Beispiel in der Agenda 2010 mit ihrem Reformschwergewicht Hartz IV zeigen. Im Fokus stehen dann deren Auswirkungen auf die Arbeitswelt insbesondere auf die Motivation und die Leistungsbereitschaft der Mitarbeiter. Den Abschluss bilden Ansätze und Lösungsmöglichkeiten für Politik und Wirtschaft, wie – Hand in Hand – die diskutierten Probleme unserer Gesellschaft anzugehen sein könnten, um die Bevölkerung und mithin auch die Beschäftigten aus ihrer kollektiven Starre und dem lähmenden Pessimismus zu lösen.
