Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1783, an unusual dry fog descended upon large parts of the northern hemisphere. The fog brought with it bloodred sunsets, a foul sulfuric odor, and a host of other peculiar weather events. Inspired by the Enlightenment, many naturalists attempted to find reasonable explanations for these occurrences. Between 8 June 1783 and 7 February 1784, a 27-kilometer-long fissure volcano erupted in the Icelandic highlands. It produced the largest volume of lava released by any volcanic eruption on planet Earth in the last millennium. In Iceland, the eruption led to the death of one-fifth of the population. The jetstream carried its volcanic gases further afield to Europe and beyond, where they settled as a fog, the origin of which puzzled naturalists and laypersons. "A Mist Connection" is an environmental history that documents the Laki eruption and its consequences for Iceland and the wider world. The book combines methods of historical disaster research, climate history, global history, history of science, and geology in an interdisciplinary approach. Icelandic flood lava eruptions of this scale have a statistical recurrence period of 200 to 500 years; it is crucial to understand their nature so that we can prepare for the next one. An eruption of this magnitude would surely be disastrous for our modern, globalized, and interconnected world.

He spent many hours fixated on the coastal waters of Maine while standing outside the tower of Cape Elizabeth’s famous lighthouse. During one calm, peaceful morning, he witnessed a little more than he’d expected. Stumbling across a group of outsiders to his hometown, Samuel learned of a criminal syndicate so ruthless, it would risk the lives of his entire family. The Irish Mafia found refuge within the community of Portland Maine. Their bloodthirsty members tormented local citizens creating and fortifying a criminal empire reaching all aspects of life in the city. Their livelihood centered on exporting valuable stolen goods overseas. Anyone caught hindering that process succumbed to the violent nature of mob life. Samuel found out the hard way mob bosses silenced all witnesses. He fell directly into the middle of crime spree so horrific, he discovered the antics of the Irish Mafia literally would involve the dead. Risking his own life, Samuel reached out to government officials in positions of authority for help. Unfortunately, mafia ties within the government halted any assistance. Samuel turned to his father for assistance and advice, but even his most trusted parent seemed to walk a thin line. Samuel was confused about his father’s position, concerned he might somehow be involved with the mafia. Turning to the streets for solace, a most inconspicuous homeless man befriended a young Samuel, giving him sound advice on how to handle his predicament. Samuel carried out his actions using that advice, determined to learn of his father’s involvement with the Irish Mob while protecting his family in the process. Unfortunately, the mob wasn’t going to have a recent graduate of high school interrupt their plans. Removing any and all witnesses was the only stance for the mobsters. Samuel had no choice but to expose the mafia’s actions, while bringing attention to their criminal syndicate. An all-out adventure that span not only Portland, but also the islands off the coast of Maine led to a standoff with some of the most notorious killers the State of Maine had ever seen. Filled with fast-paced boat chases along the coast, to underground investigations, Samuel worked his hardest to expose every detail of the Irish Mafia’s enterprise. The only cost: he would never see his father again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second largest order of mammals, Chiroptera comprises more than one thousand species of bats. Because of their mobility, bats are often the only native mammals on isolated oceanic islands, where more than half of all bat species live. These island bats represent an evolutionarily distinctive and ecologically significant part of the earth’s biological diversity. Island Bats is the first book to focus solely on the evolution, ecology, and conservation of bats living in the world’s island ecosystems. Among other topics, the contributors to this volume examine how the earth’s history has affected the evolution of island bats, investigate how bat populations are affected by volcanic eruptions and hurricanes, and explore the threat of extinction from human disturbance. Geographically diverse, the volume includes studies of the islands of the Caribbean, the Western Indian Ocean, Micronesia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Zealand. With its wealth of information from long-term studies, Island Bats provides timely and valuable information about how this fauna has evolved and how it can be conserved.

The great warrior Bran has been called home from the battlefield to his mother's deathbed, where he vows to solve the strange mystery surrounding what fatally attacked her in the night. He travels to the Crossroads seeking the wise counsel of Talhaiarn, High Priest and advisor to his clan, where he learns similar attacks have been reported by clans to the north and east; horrors that Talhaiarn suspects are the dark handiwork of the powerful Cerridwen, a rogue priestess of the Sisterhood that dwells on an island surrounded by the misty waters of Lake Tegid. On his journey Bran encounters the fiery, red-haired Lucia, widow to a Roman centurion, and her strangely-gifted stable boy, Gwion, an enigmatic child graced with understanding far beyond his years. Lucia possesses "the Sight," an ability that has plagued her from the time she was a small girl, tormenting her with visions of terrible things which invariably come to pass. Fate leads Lucia to discover that many of her maternal ancestors were masterful women gifted with psychic abilities, and that some of them have been watching her from the shadows for years. Upon returning to his village, Bran finds himself at odds with the hot-tempered Aelhaearn, who is determined to become their clan's next chieftain. Much to Aelhaearn's disappointment, Bran's sister, now priestess in her mother's place, convinces the clan to choose Bran for the honor instead. In the aftermath of their conflict Bran learns something shocking about his rival. Slowly all are pulled into the seductive maelstrom of Cerridwen's power, and though many will fight bravely, only one is able to make the sacrifice required to defeat her.
