Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Sketches in North India: With References to Recent Events "The North India mission field occupies the greatest extent of country, and numbers the largest staff of European missionaries, of any of the Church Missionary Society's missions. The distance between its extreme stations is fifteen hundred miles. By the wonderful facilities of modern intercommunication, there is every reason to hope that the whole district will soon be traversed in a few days, as a message has already been sent in a few minutes." The political troubles which have been casting so dark a cloud over the prospects that lately seemed so brightening, have certainly caused a strong temporary check on missionary operations; but there is every reason to hope it will be but temporary, and if the Church awake to her great responsibilities, it may be seen that it was but as the bursting of a heavy thunder-storm, which, though dreadful and appalling for the time it lasts, disperses the dark and threatening clouds in which ignorance and superstition have for ages enveloped India, and opens it more effectually for the descent of the vivifying rays of the Sun of righteousness. Download or read book Converting Women written by Eliza F. Kent and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the emergence of Hindu nationalism, the conversion of Indians to Christianity has become a volatile issue, erupting in violence against converts and missionaries. At the height of British colonialism, however, conversion was a path to upward mobility for low-castes and untouchables, especially in the Tamil-speaking south of India. In this book, Eliza F. Kent takes a fresh look at these conversions, focusing especially on the experience of women converts and the ways in which conversion transformed gender roles and expectations. Kent argues that the creation of a new, "respectable" community identity was central to the conversion process for the agricultural laborers and artisans who embraced Protestant Christianity under British rule. At the same time, she shows, this new identity was informed as much by elite Sanskritic customs and ideologies as by Western Christian discourse. Stigmatized by the dominant castes for their ritually polluting occupations and relaxed rules governing kinship and marriage, low-caste converts sought to validate their new higher-status identity in part by the reform of gender relations. These reforms affected ideals of femininity and masculinity in the areas of marriage, domesticity, and dress. By the creation of a "discourse of respectability," says Kent, Tamil Christians hoped to counter the cultural justifications for their social, economic, and sexual exploitation at the hands of high-caste landowners and village elites. Kent's focus on the interactions between Western women missionaries and the Indian Christian women not only adds depth to our understanding of colonial and patriarchal power dynamics, but to the intricacies of conversion itself. Posing an important challenge to normative notions of conversion as a privatized, individual moment in time, Kent's study takes into consideration the ways that public behavior, social status, and the transformation of everyday life inform religious conversion.

Book Synopsis Women and Empire 1750-1939 by : Cheryl Cassidy
Download or read book Women and Empire 1750-1939 written by Cheryl Cassidy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2008. Women and Empire, 1750-1939 functions to extend significantly the range of the History of Feminism series (co-published by Routledge and Edition Synapse), bringing together the histories of British and American women's emancipation, represented in earlier sets, into juxtaposition with histories produced by different kinds of imperial and colonial governments. The alignment of writings from a range of Anglo-imperial contexts reveals the overlapping histories and problems, while foregrounding cultural specificities and contextual inflections of imperialism. The volumes focus on countries, regions, or continents formerly colonized (in part) by Britain: Volume I: Australia, Volume II: New Zealand, Volume III: Africa, Volume IV: India, Volume V: Canada. Perhaps the most novel aspect of this collection is its capacity to highlight the common aspects of the functions of empire in their impact on women and their production of gender, and conversely, to demonstrate the actual specificity of particular regional manifestations. Concerning questions of power, gender, class and race, this new Routledge-Edition Synapse Major Work will be of particular interest to scholars and students of imperialism, colonization, women's history, and women's writing.
