Book excerpt: Born and educated in Milan, Italy, Samuel Mazzuchelli (1806-1864) began his American ministry in 1828 at Mackinac Island, a center of the fur trade. Building churches, organizing schools, and preaching in both French and English, he traveled the Mississippi and the Great Lakes over long distances and in all seasons. After 1839, he continued much of his work in Iowa as a vicar-general to the bishop of the newly-created see of Dubuque. Mazzuchelli eventually founded both a men's college and a teaching convent, the Congregation of the Most Holy Rosary, in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin, and extended the Church's outreach within Native American communities. In 1849, Mazzuchelli relinquished many of his administrative responsibilities to become the priest of the parish at Benton, Wisconsin, where he also served as director of the novitiate and school opened by the Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Rosary. Mazzuchelli's Memoirs are divided into three sections: the first focuses upon missions among Native Americans and Canadians in Wisconsin and Michigan; the second deals with missions among Catholic and Protestant immigrants in the territories of Wisconsin and Iowa; and the third is a disquisition on the present and future state of Catholicism and Protestantism in the United States. Although spiritual matters are the principal concern, the memoirs also convey much about the Upper Midwest's political life and early community institutions.

Book Synopsis Who Are the Apostles by : Robert Scudieri
Download or read book Who Are the Apostles written by Robert Scudieri and published by Mission Nation Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Christians associate the word "apostle" with the leaders of early Christianity. But few realize there is far more to its meaning and origins. In "Who Are the Apostles?," author Rev. Dr. Robert Scudieri offers a rich history of the term, from its original Greek concept, to the office among the Jewish people, and to the profound changes to the idea made by Jesus himself. This remarkable book then traces the lives of Jesus's twelve apostles, where they traveled, which countries they evangelized, and where they planted new churches. He examines the various traits that made them uniquely suited for their work and compares those qualities to today's missionaries-especially the missionaries to America -and the unique calling they have to reach every ethnic group. In the vein of "Augustus to Constantine" by Robert M. Grant, "The Apostolic Imperative" by Carl E. Braaten, and "Evangelism in the Early Church" by Michael Green, this extraordinary resource seeks to not only honor the Christian missionaries both past and present, but also to reach out to those who might be unfamiliar with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Retirement by : John Piper
Download or read book Rethinking Retirement written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2009-03-27 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Piper challenges fellow baby boomers to forego the American dream of retirement and live out their golden years with a far greater purpose in mind. They say it's a person's reward for all those years of labor. "Turn in your time card and trade in your IRAs. Let travel plans and golf-course leisure lead the way." But is retirement really the ideal? Or is it a series of poor options that ignore a greater purpose-and will kill a person more quickly than old age? John Piper responds: "Lord, spare me this curse!" And his resounding message is for anyone who believes there's far more to the golden years than accumulating comforts. It's for readers who long to finish better than they started, persevere for the right reasons (and without fear), experience true security, value what lies beyond their cravings, and live dangerously for the One who gave his life in his prime. With this brief book, Piper is sure to spur fellow baby boomers in their resolve to invest themselves in the sacrifices of love -and to grow old with godly zeal.
