This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first four essays in Mission in Malawi reassess the meaning, nature and place of mission in a postmodern world. Subsequent essays examine various issues that missionaries and the Church in Malawi have and continue to struggle with. These range from the problem of administering church discipline, the challenge of Bible translation, the question of how to deal with corruption in the corridors of power to the challenges of dealing with initiation rites, HIV/AIDS, patriarchy, gender inequality, the exercise of the Church's prophetic role, lack of contextualized theology, and the difficult task of creating an inclusive church and society. The last three essays are an attempt to describe a contextual theology appropriate for the African church, construct a theology for Malawi and project a future for mission in Malawi in the context of a changing world. These essays offer a rare window into the life and struggles of the Malawian Church even as it faces the postmodern future. The essays are not only informative but also challenging and thought-provoking. Scholars, students and other readers who share an interest in mission and the life of the Church in Malawi will find this collection of essays indispensable in the many years to come.

The focus of this book is about documenting the religious experience which was at the centre of founding the new nation of Malawi as we have come to know it. The book strikes a balance in covering issues pertaining to both mission activities and African agency. In many instances interesting pieces of evidence have been marshalled to corroborate or emphasize some of the conclusions reached.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let My people go and serve Me regardless of sex" is the ultimate appeal from God. Unfortunately, some cultural practices and wrong interpretations of the Bible have excluded some, especially women, from attaining key leadership roles. Culturally, women are considered second class and men's property, source of evil and "weaker vessels." A wrong interpretation of the scriptures has sidelined women from obtaining decision making positions. This is the result of what may be called, "a One-Dimensional Approach," and a recommendation is made to "re-read" the biblical texts as well as Chewa culture and the history of the synod with a "Multi-Dimensional Approach" in which the literary, theological-rhetorical and historical-cultural aspects are all considered, because this approach liberates the oppressed and the marginalized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1924, the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) has grown to span five synods across Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa. Dr Rhodian Munyenyembe traces the history of these synods back to their shared roots in the Reformation and individual roots in three separate Presbyterian missions. Dr Munyenyembe skillfully explores both historic and contemporary challenges to the unity of the CCAP, and raises the question of whether the CCAP truly functions as a single denomination or could better be understood as a loose federation of five distinct churches. His in-depth explanation provides a critical look that goes beyond a surface understanding of what it means to unite churches from different cultural traditions, and brings honest answers to disputes and conflicts among the CCAP synods. Through this analysis and exploration, Dr Munyenyembe also sheds light on the political and socio-economic aspects of life in relation to the influence of religious denominations. In this objective yet astute account, Munyenyembe gives voice to the CCAP’s complex history, present reality, and future potential.

Book excerpt: The second annual conference of the Theological Society of Malawi was held at the historic Ekwendeni Campus of the University of Livingstonia from 14 to 16 September 2021. It took up the urgent theme of the decolonization of the theological curriculum. Though Malawi has been an independent country for 58 years, coloniality still stalks the land. This book calls theologians to take a lead in decolonization, while navigating the educational task in an online age. With more than twenty institutions teaching theology at tertiary level in Malawi, and now united in the Theological Society of Malawi, there is huge potential to learn from each other in developing the theological curriculum in the country. While the primary audience is unashamedly a Malawian one, this book might also prove relevant in other contexts where there is a reckoning with past and present experience of colonialism. The book is a call to action and is published in the hope that it will have lasting impact on the teaching and learning of theology in Malawi and beyond.

Book excerpt: The Ministry of Women in the church for has for a long time attracted scholarly attention. This book investigates Paul's Gender Theology in the book of Galatians in the light of understanding contentious biblical texts and on the background of the position of women in the Greco-Roman World. The results attained are then related to wides issues about the role of women, particularly in CCAP Zambia, and divergent positions are noted. A historical critical reading of these texts, especially Gal 3:28, provides an alternative Pauline Gender Theology to achieve respect, equal opportunities and equal roles for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Malawians know their national hero, the Rev John Chilembwe, who, in 1915, protested against colonialism with an armed uprising. To understand him, it is necessary to understand Joseph Booth, who baptized him and took him to America in 1897 to study for the Baptist ministry. There in America Booth published his Africa for the African to the intense dislike of the colonial administration. Booth was an Evangelical missionary, but a maverick among them. This book explores what made him the odd man out among his fellow missionaries by tracing his and his family's life in Auckland and Melbourne, arguing that his political involvement must be understood from his specific Baptist background.

This book celebrates McCrackens contribution to the study of Malawis history and seeks to build on his legacy. Part of his genius was that he identified themes that hold the key to understanding the history of Malawi in its broader perspective. The authors contributing to this volume address these themes, assessing the progress of historiography and setting an agenda for the further advance of historical studies. The book is a valuable resource for students, researchers and all who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Malawis past and present.

Book excerpt: Though Achewa Providence Industrial Mission (APIM) is a church that is confined to the Chewa people, one of John Chilembwe's students, Peter Kalemba, a Chewa, was instrumental in the founding of PIM, and later, the organization of APIM in Mangoni. Both churches trace their heritage back to Chilembwe, a Baptist. APIM was instrumental in the beginning of churches in Lilongwe that form the backbone of BACOMA. Since APIM has not spread out to include people of other ethnic groups, Christianization by means of the people group movement is by no means the perfect answer to the evangelization of a tribe.

All ten essays are grounded in the Malawi context while their themes also have relevance far beyond it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume constitutes Klaus Fiedlers crowning contribution to scholarship. Essays in the first half of the book focus on Malawian Christianity and how contrasting Powers, Gospel and Secular, engage each other, creating social, political and cultural conflict in the process. In the second half, Fiedler examines general missiological themes. These essays provide a broader missiological background, offering a theoretical framework necessary for appreciating the essays in the first half. He concludes with a chapter that reviews selected seminal books on themes under study. Throughout the volume Fiedler applies the restorationist revival theory he constructed in The Story of Faith Missions, an earlier 1994 work putting emphasis on non classical missions and churches, not systematically covered in earlier scholarship. This volume, the first of its kind on Malawian Christianity, will long remain an indispensable text for those interested in Missiology and Malawian Christianity.

This emphasis implies that lay empowerment and lay participation are central to what the church does. Yet, lay participation is a bit of an unfulfilled promise in many cases. This book brings together church leaders, theological educators, as well as practitioners who are actively involved in lay ministry here in Malawi, so that a stronger theology of laity for the Malawian church can emerge.
