Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first English translation represents Sergius Bulgakov’s final, fully developed word on the Eucharist. The debate around the controversial doctrine of the Eucharist as sacrifice has dogged relations between Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches since the Reformation. In The Eucharistic Sacrifice, the famous Russian theologian Sergius Bulgakov cuts through long-standing polemics surrounding the notion of the Eucharist as sacrifice and offers a stunningly original intervention rooted in his distinctive theological vision. This work, written in 1940, belongs to Bulgakov’s late period and is his last, and most discerning, word on eucharistic theology. His primary thesis is that the Eucharist is an extension of the sacrificial, self-giving love of God in the Trinity, or what he famously refers to as kenosis. Throughout the book, Bulgakov points to the fact that, although the eucharistic sacrifice at the Last Supper took place in time before the actual crucifixion of Christ, both events are part of a single act that occurs outside of time. This is Bulgakov’s concluding volume of three works on the Eucharist. The other two, The Eucharistic Dogma and The Holy Grail, were translated and published together in 1997. This third volume was only first published in the original Russian version in 2005 and has remained unavailable in English until now. The introduction provides a brief history of Bulgakov’s theological career and a description of the structure of The Eucharistic Sacrifice. This clear and accessible translation will appeal to scholars and students of theology, ecumenism, and Russian religious thought.

Book excerpt: Red River Mission – The Story of a People and Their Church is a graphic novel that relates remarkable historic events concerning the Catholic Church in Western Canada. This story is tightly interwoven, like a voyageur’s sash, with significant events in the history of Western Canada, thanks to the Church’s involvement since 1818 in the social, political and cultural aspects of a nascent society. In this book, Manitoba’s history comes alive: the fur trade, the voyageurs, the bison hunt on the Prairies, the Battle of Seven Oaks, the Battle of Grand Coteau, the saga of the Métis and First Nations, the founding of the Province of Manitoba, the story of Louis Riel. This fascinating historical chronicle is related in a series of true anecdotes, captured through the lens of the ninth art, illustrating the colourful history of Western Canada during the eras of bishops Provencher and Taché, the first apostles of the Catholic Church in the West, whose contributions have significantly impacted Canada’s present environment.

Book excerpt: Widespread disagreements about matters of right and wrong have led many philosophers and non-philosophers to conclude that moral knowledge is impossible. Nevertheless, we all make moral pronouncement every day. In this book, Mary Gore Forrester considers the nature of the language we use in ordinary life to make those moral evaluations, what that language indicates about the criteria we use for making such evaluations, and the conditions for determining the truth or falsity of moral evaluations. Specialists in ordinary language philosophy will enjoy Forrester's arguments to the effect that the descriptivist's position on moral language is correct and that non-descriptivist positions on the matter can be disproved.

Book excerpt: La Place looks at a daughter’s relationship with her father. In a fragmented and retrospective way the narrator describes her feelings of separation and betrayal that arise when education and marriage place her in a social class with different values, language, tastes and behaviour. She explores the ways in which individual experience is related to class and group attitudes and at the same time tells us a great deal about French society in general since the turn of the century. It is a concentrated text, cut through with irony and may be read in different ways. La Place will be an accessible and exciting addition to French studies courses.

Book excerpt: This highly interesting collection of historical articles started as a series of “space-fillers”, the journalist's device to mitigate the harshness of white space at the end of scientific papers. The author has expanded these short essays and included several additional articles and biographical reviews. He has also incorporated some longer, more discursive essays, which should be relevant to neurologists, physicians and those working in internal medicine and psychiatry. The reader attracted to medical and neurological history should find much of interest in these diverse topics.
