Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Miss Lulu Bett is a powerful and often-times moving play of life in a small Wisconsin town. Viewed by her relatives as a characteristic spinster, Lulu finds herself accidentally married to the charming black sheep of the family. Discovering during her honeymoon that her husband is a bigamist, she returns to her small town. However, she refuses to be overwhelmed by the shame and mortification which her overbearing relatives expect her to feel as a result of her plight. Refusing to accept conventional wisdom, she breaks with her past and sets out to forge a new life of her own. Dorothy Parker hailed the play as "truthful" and claimed it was "among the best written plays of the season," a season that included Eugene O'Neill and Pirandello. Set at the dawn of the women's moment, the play is remembered today for breaking new ground in theatrical realism. Theatre Arts Press is proud to present a new acting edition of this classic play.

The unmarried Lulu has learned that she cannot question her role as chief cook, housekeeper, and gracious presence. But when Dwight’s sophisticated brother Ninian comes to visit, Lulu finds in herself a surprising wit–and the boldness to accept his playful proposal of marriage. Through her appealing, determined heroine, Zona Gale satirically dispatches a sheaf of the social assumptions of her day, from male supremacy to the security of marriage. First published in 1920, Miss Lulu Bett was immediately acclaimed, and went on to become one of two bestselling novels of the year. Together with four of Gale’s short stories–including the O. Henry award-winning “Bridal Pond”–Miss Lulu Bett reflects Gale’s broad progressive interests and the fast-paced, affecting prose which made her one of the most popular writers of her time and a classic American storteller. “A great book . . . the telling is almost incomparable” —Robert Benchley, The World “Eloquent. . . . Miss Lulu Bett is without flaw” —The Atlantic Monthly “It has a narrowly limned beauty. . . . The book stands as a signal accomplishment in American letters” —The New Republic

Book excerpt: Zona Gale (1874-1938) was an American writer. Born in Portage, Wisconsin, which she often used as a setting in her writing, she attended Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Later she entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison, from which she received a Bachelor of Literature degree in 1895, and four years later a Master's degree. After graduation, Gale wrote for newspapers in Milwaukee and New York City. However, before long she gave up journalism to focus on fiction writing. She then published her first novel, Romance Island (1906), and began the very popular series of "Friendship Village" stories. In 1912, Gale moved back to Portage, which she would call home for the rest of her life, although alternating with trips to New York. In 1920, she published the novel Miss Lulu Bett, which depicts life in the Midwestern United States. She adapted it as a play, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1921. In the same year, Gale took an active role in the creation of the Wisconsin Equal Rights Law, which prohibits discrimination against women.

Book excerpt: Top 100 Books – Bestsellers - Classic Novels Miss Lulu Bett by Zona Gale Miss Lulu Bett is a 1920 novel by American writer Zona Gale, and later adapted for the stage. It was a bestseller at the time of its initial publication, but gradually fell out of favor with changing tastes and social conditions. The story concerns a woman, Lulu, who lives with her sister's family, essentially acting as a servant. She does not complain about her position, but is not happy. When her brother-in-law's brother, Ninian, comes to visit, there is a certain attraction between them. While joking around one evening they find themselves accidentally married, due to the laws of the state requiring little more than wedding vows to be recited while a magistrate is in the room for a marriage to count as legal. On learning this, Ninian and Lulu decide they actually like the idea of being married, and choose to stick with it. However, within a month, Lulu is back home, having discovered that Ninian was already legally married: 18 years prior he had wed a girl who left him after 2 years, and he had actually forgotten about the whole thing. Lulu considers this a reasonable story, but her brother-in-law, Dwight, insists that it would be a humiliation to the family to reveal such a thing, and insists that she tell everyone instead that Ninian grew bored with her and left her. Lulu is unable to see why this should be a less humiliating story, and begins to complain about her circumstances for the first time. She also notices that her teenage niece, Di, is unhappy, and also seems to be trying to use marriage as a way to escape her circumstance. Lulu eventually has to prevent Di from eloping, and is finally inspired to move out of her sister's home and live on her own. Two endings were written for the play, the original as seen in December 1920 (and the ending that won Gale the Pulitzer Prize from Drama; the first woman ever to do so) has Lulu starting a life on her own and undertaking adventures of her own as we hear in her final lines, "Good-by. Good-by, all of you. I'm going I don't know where-to work at I don't know what. But I'm going from choice!" The revised ending is a much less satisfying one, but is more typical and would have been a bit more commercially acceptable and far less challenging to the audiences of the day. In this ending, Ninian shows up in the nick of time just as Lulu decides to go off on her own life to work and live elsewhere. He asks her forgiveness and she agrees saying "I forgave you in Savannah, Georgia."

Book excerpt: "[...] "Some bread and milk!" cried Mrs. Deacon brightly, exploding on "bread." One wondered how she thought of it. "No," said Monona, inflection up, chin the same. She was affecting indifference to, this scene, in which her soul delighted. She twisted her head, bit her lips unconcernedly, and turned her eyes to the remote. There emerged from the fringe of things, where she perpetually hovered, Mrs. Deacon's older sister, Lulu Bett, who was "making her home with us." And that was precisely the case. They were not making her a home, goodness knows. Lulu was the family beast of burden. "Can't I make her a little milk toast?" she asked Mrs. Deacon.[...]".

Book excerpt: An excerpt from Topics, Volume 1-2 [1920]: THE story of "Miss Lulu Bett" is a very real — sometimes pathetically real — sketch of the life of an ordinary middle western family, composed of Mr. and Mrs. Deacon, their two daughters, and Mother Bett and Sister Lulu, who are “making their home" with the Deacons. In return for her home, Lulu fills the role of family drudge; accepts the jibes and elephantine witticisms directed at her by her pompously humorous brother-in-law; pampers the child Monona; endures the superior airs of her married sister; and in general makes the family comfortable, not because of any love or gratitude which she feels for them, but rather from habit, colorless passivity, and failure to realize the possibility of a condition of affairs other than as they are. But into the story strolls stodgy Ninian Deacon, to whom years of travel in South America and the Islands have failed to impart more than a one-candle-power glamour; and Ninian is the instrument whom fate and Zona Gale select to rescue Lulu from the rut of passive acceptance of her lot. It is not a large story, and — it does not pretend to be. It does not force large emotions and grand passions upon people too small to contain them. Lulu Bett does not develop from the family drudge into the butterfly of the emancipated woman; but in very realistic fashion, she is shoved out of an old habit of living and thinking, by chance and trivial circumstance. She is not a pretty woman even though she may have her pretty moments; she is not even always pathetic in an appealing way — she is at times rather a sorry figure of the type that makes you feel rather pained and ashamed; but she is interesting because she is a real person in the process of developing a backbone. And the happy culmination of the story for Lulu, in spite of her goodness rather than because of it, is a satisfying ending. Aside from the interest in Lulu's story, the most notable feature of the book is the cool analysis of the motives for everyday actions; old Mrs. Bett's tantrums are indulged in at great personal inconvenience for the sheer bliss of making the rest of the family uncomfortable; Monona refuses the food offered her at meal time for the pleasure of being in the limelight. It is an interesting study in compelling motives, not flattering to the human race, but quite convincing. "Miss Lulu Bett" is a good story for those who like “that sort of thing", and even for those who don't.

Book excerpt: Like Snow Falling on Cedars, a stirring tale of wartime love April, 1944. The quiet rural village of Stark, New Hampshire is irrevocably changed by the arrival of 150 German prisoners of war. And one family, unexpectedly divided, must choose between love and country. Camp Stark is under the command of Major John Brennan, whose beautiful daughter, Collie, will serve as translator. Educated at Smith and devoted to her widowed father, Collie is immediately drawn to Private August Wahrlich, a peaceful poet jaded by war. As international conflict looms on the home front, their passion blinds them to the inevitable dangers ahead. Inspired by the little-known existence of a real World War II POW camp, The Major’s Daughter is a fresh take on the timeless theme of forbidden love.
