Download or read book Champs Délicieux written by Man Ray and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1921, an up-and-coming artist named Man Ray convinced his patron, Ferdinand Howald, to pay his fare from New York to Paris and to support him there for a year. He quickly fell in with the Dadaists, and his art changed. He pioneered a new art form, a cameraless photograph he called the 'Rayograph'. Champs délicieux documents that year in Paris by reproducing the correspondence between Man Ray and Howald and by publishing Howald's personal copy of Ray's album (also Champs délicieux) from that year - the first significant body of Ray's work. By placing these images in the context of the letters, Champs délicieux recreates an important turning point in Ray's career and a definitive moment in art history. This collection, exhibited in the fall of 2000 by co-publisher University of Toronto Art Centre, was edited by Steven Manford, who is currently assembling, with Timothy Baum, a catalogue raisonné of the Rayographs.

Book Synopsis Country Women Cope with Hard Times by : Melissa A. Walker
Download or read book Country Women Cope with Hard Times written by Melissa A. Walker and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare glimpses into the hardscrabble lives of rural Southern women and a model for oral history practice "It was hard times," French Carpenter Clark recalls, a sentiment unanimously echoed by the sixteen other women who talk about their lives in Country Women Cope with Hard Times. Born between 1890 and 1940 in eastern Tennessee and western South Carolina, these women grew up on farms, in labor camps, and in remote towns during an era when the region's agricultural system changed dramatically. As daughters and wives, they milked cows, raised livestock, planted and harvested crops, worked in textile mills, sold butter and eggs, preserved food, made cloth, sewed clothes, and practiced remarkable resourcefulness. Their recollections paint a vivid picture of rural life in the first half of the twentieth century for a class of women underrepresented in historical accounts. Through her edited interviews with these women, Melissa Walker provides firsthand descriptions of the influence of modernization on ordinary people struggling through the agricultural depression of the 1920s and 1930s and its aftermath. Their oral histories make plain the challenges such women faced and the self-sacrificing ways they found to confront hardship. While the women detail the difficulties of their existence—the drought years, early freezes, low crop prices, and tenant farming—they also recall the good times and the neighborly assistance of well-developed mutual aid networks, of which women were the primary participants.

With the Professor's help, they discovered the secret way. But waiting for them was the scheming Prock, who would use almost any means to keep them away from his beloved king. Download or read book Earth and High Heaven written by Gwethalyn Graham and published by Cormorant Books. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Erika Drake, of the Westmount Drakes, met and fell in love with Marc Reiser, a Jew from northern Ontario, their respective worlds were turned upside down. Set against the backdrop of the first three years of the Second World War, Earth and High Heaven captured the hearts and minds of its generation and helped to shape the more diverse and inclusive culture we have today. Published in 1944, this classic novel was very timely; it spoke of the prejudices of its time, when Gentiles and Jews did not mix in society. Earth and High Heaven was the most successful novel of its time, winning many awards and prizes, including the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 1945 (an award founded to reward books that exposed racism or explored the richness of human diversity). It was translated into eighteen languages and the film rights were purchased by Samuel Goldwyn for a remarkable $100,000. Earth and High Heaven was the first Canadian novel to top the New York Times bestseller list for the better part of a year.

Book Synopsis The New Woman Behind the Camera by : Andrea Nelson
Download or read book The New Woman Behind the Camera written by Andrea Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the many ways women around the world helped shape modern photography from the 1920s to the 1950s as they captured images of a radically changing world During the 1920s the New Woman was easy to recognize but hard to define. Hair bobbed and fashionably dressed, this iconic figure of modernity was everywhere, splashed across magazine pages or projected on the silver screen. A global phenomenon, she embodied an ideal of female empowerment based on real women making revolutionary changes in life and art--including photography. This groundbreaking, richly illustrated book looks at those "new women" who embraced the camera as a mode of expression and made a profound impact on the medium from the 1920s to the 1950s. Thematic chapters explore how women emerged as a driving force in modern photography, bringing their own perspective to artistic experimentation, studio portraiture, fashion and advertising work, scenes of urban life, ethnography and photojournalism. Featuring work by 120 photographers, this volume expands the history of photography by critically examining an international array of canonical and less well-known women photographers, from Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange and Lola Álvarez Bravo to Germaine Krull, Tsuneko Sasamoto and Homai Vyarawalla. Against the odds, these women produced invaluable visual testimony that reflects both their personal experiences and the extraordinary social and political transformations of the era.
