Download or read book Feminists in Politics written by Alice S. Rossi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminists in Politics: A Panel Analysis of the First National Women's Conference provides a systematic study of the impact of the National Women's Conference held in Houston, Texas, in November 1977, on the participants. It traces the past political activities of the conference participants; what they actually did during the conference; the impact of the conference on their commitment to political action in the future; and their aspirations for holding elected office in American politics or in organizations associated with the feminist movement. The volume begins by placing the IWY Commission and the study of the conference in the context of feminist history—both the long-term history that reaches back to Seneca Falls in 1848 and the short-term history of more recent post-1965 political developments. Subsequent chapters deal with design, variable measurement, and response pattern analysis; political organization and group formation; the differences between Pro-Plan and Anti-Plan activists at the conference; and the past political development of the delegates and their political aspirations. This impact analysis will be of interest to political scientists and sociologists, as well as to political activists concerned with the efficacy of alternative action strategies.

Download or read book Teshuvah written by Adin Steinsaltz and published by Maggid. This book was released on 2010 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teshuvah ("return") is personal, multifaceted spiritual reawakening, a desire to strengthen the connection between oneself and the sacred. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz's Teshuvah is not inteded as a call to action, or an attempt to convince anyone to take that path. Rather, it is addressed to those who are already considering teshuvah, whose who have already resolved to undertake it or have already begun. The book is offered to the ba'al teshuvahas advice and guidance in dealing with some of the difficulties likely to be encountered along the way. It addresses matters of principle and spiritual orientation: what the observances mean, how they are related, and once embarked on the path of teshuvah how one is to relate to self, family, and the surrounding society.

Book Synopsis God, Torah, Israel by : Louis Jacobs
Download or read book God, Torah, Israel written by Louis Jacobs and published by Hebrew Union College Press. This book was released on 1990-12-31 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these three lectures, the eminent British rabbi and theologian Louis Jacobs defines and defends his position as a liberal supernaturalist and halakhic nonfundamentalist in those areas where the religious Jew is confronted with the conflicting truth claims of modern knowledge and traditional belief. Jacobs begins by contrasting the theistic belief in a personal God with some of its alternatives; he argues that the liberal supernaturalist's position is both the closest in approximation to the traditional Jewish view and still the most coherent way to deal with the fundamental mysteries of the universe, even after Freud, Darwin, Marx, and modern technology have replaced a God-centered universe with a universe the center of which is man. The second lecture explores the impact of modern science and scholarship on the doctrine of Torah min hashamayim, divine revelation of the Written and Oral Torah. Acknowledging the influence of geology, astronomy, anthropology, comparative religion, Wissenschaft des Judentums, and Textual Criticism on the development of the Torah, Jacobs argues that one can be objective without any sacrifice of piety if one accepts the premise that "the totality we call Torah is human imbued with the divine." Finally, in the third lecture, Jacobs discusses traditional interpretations of the doctrine of the Chosen People and examines some of the tensions it generates today in terms of interreligious tolerance, the Jewish people and the Jewish state, and the demands of the group versus the needs of the individual. In addition, he contrasts fundamentalist and nonfundamentalist attitudes toward various eschatological idead, advocating a position of "reverent agnosticism" with regard to belief in the Messiah and resurrection of the dead but affirming acceptance of the immortality of the soul as a basic principle of modern Jewish faith.

Book excerpt: Rabbi Jacobs, with sixty years' experience of pulpit work to his credit, provides a number of homilies for each weekly portion of the modern sermon and for the chapters of Ethics of the Fathers. The text for the modern sermon is usually the sidra, the weekly portion, or, in the summer months the Talmudic book known universally as Ethics of the Fathers. Among the sermonic themes are contemporary problems, the religious and ethical needs of the individual, and, of course, the impact of the Holocaust and the State of Israel.
