Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gateway to Judaism is an insider's engaging look at the mindset, values, and practices of Judaism in the 21st century. As a senior lecturer and outreach expert with Gateways Seminars, Rabbi Mordechai Becher has helped thousands of people reconnect with the beauty, wisdom and relevance of their Jewish heritage. Often asked to recommend "just one book" that would explain the essentials of Jewish life and thought , he decided to write it himself! Delving beneath common perceptions of Jewish tradition, Rabbi Becher presents fresh and meaningful perspectives that will educate and inspire you. Among the many intriguing topics he addresses are: Is there spirituality in Judaism? In our age of labor-saving devices, do we still need a Sabbath? What is Judaism's view on death and the afterlife? Why is Judaism so full of laws? Why should I pray? Does God really want to hear my complaints? Can Judaism enhance my marriage? Isn't circumcision just an ancient rite of initiation? Is it still relevant? Why is Israel so central to Judaism? Does a religion need a land? Why does a mourner say Kaddish? Wasn't keeping kosher a health measure? Does it still have a purpose today? How can I add meaning to my Passover Seder? Gateway to Judaism reveals Judaism's power to elevate your life. Whether you are new to Jewish tradition, familiar with its practice, or simply curious, you will find this book an illuminating guide to a joyous and fulfilling lifestyle. -- from dust cover.

The name of each community is accompanied by information about it: when it was founded, the Jewish population in different years, shops and synagogues, and the names of citizens. An appendix locates each town on a map of Lithuania. Since most of the Jewish communities in Lithuania were destroyed in the Holocaust, this volume will be a valuable tool in recreating a picture of Lithuanian Jewry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revised and extensively rewritten edition of one of the most influential monographs on legal philosophy published in recent years. Writing in the introduction to the first edition the author characterized Anglophone philosophers as being ..."divided, and often waver[ing] between two main philosophical objectives: the moral evaluation of law and legal institutions, and an account of its actual nature." Questions of methodology have therefore tended to be sidelined, but were bound to surface sooner or later, as they have in the later work of Ronald Dworkin. The main purpose of this book is to provide a critical assessment of Dworkin's methodological turn, away from analytical jurisprudence towards a theory of interpretation, and the issues it gives rise to. The author argues that the importance of Dworkin's interpretative turn is not that it provides a substitute for 'semantic theories of law' (a dubious concept), but that it provides a new conception of jurisprudence, aiming to present itself as a comprehensive rival to the conventionalism manifest in legal positivism. Furthermore, once the interpretative turn is regarded as an overall challenge to conventionalism, it is easier to see why it does not confine itself to a critique of method. Law as interpretation calls into question the main tenets of its positivist rival, in substance as well as method. The book re-examines conventionalism in the light of this interpretative challenge.

Sichos delivered in winter in Europe2.Sichos from his arrival in New York on March 19, 1940, until Rosh Hashanah eve. After surviving a lifetime of painful and life-threatening crisis, Yaakov Avinu "yearned to live a life of tranquility." Nevertheless, the A-mighty said: "Are tzaddikim not satisfied with what awaits them in the World to Come, and they also seek tranquility in this world?!"Likewise, the Previous Rebbe, went through more turbulence then tranquility. After torment, incarceration and capital sentence in Russia and other challenges in Latvia and Poland, he could have wanted to live a quiet life but he had yet to endure three months in the blockade of Warsaw, horrors of which are graphically described in chapter 8. After his remarkable release and a brief stopover in Latvia, he went from Europe throughSweden to America, which did not greet the Rebbe Rayatz with a smile in that the complacency of the Jewish communal establishment, including some the veteran chassdic migrants who, instead of working desperately to revive and actualize their Old World ideals, had allowed them to fade. Yet the Rebbe Rayatz never allowed his sense of trauma to paralyze his optimism, but rather it spurred him ahead to vigorous and pioneering outreach activity.Talks in this book were delivered in Riga, New York and Lakewood. They pulsate with creative and inspiring interpretations of Biblical and Talmudic teachings; heartwarming descriptions of incidents and encounters in Lubavitch; pungent admonition; candid childhood memories; energizing stories and oral traditions, and colorful personalities whose portraits spring into life.

Bush asked the U.S. Congress to prohibit the "most egregious abuses of medical research," such as the "creation of animal–human hybrids." The president's message echoed that of a 2004 report by the President's Council on Bioethics, which recommended that hybrid human–animal embryos be banned by Congress. Discussions of early interspecies research, in which cells or DNA are interchanged between humans and nonhumans at early stages of development, can often devolve into sweeping statements, colorful imagery, and confusing policy. Although today's policy advisory groups are becoming more informed, debate is still limited by the interchangeable use of terms such as chimeras and hybrids, a tendency to treat all forms of interspecies alike, the failure to distinguish between laboratory research and procreation, and not enough serious policy justification. Andrea Bonnicksen seeks to understand reasons behind support of and disdain for interspecies research in such areas as chimerism, hybridization, interspecies nuclear transfer, cross-species embryo transfer, and transgenics. She highlights two claims critics make against early interspecies studies: that the research will violate human dignity and that it can lead to procreation. Are these claims sufficient to justify restrictive policy? Bonnicksen carefully illustrates the challenges of making policy for sensitive and often sensationalized research—research that touches deep-seated values and that probes the boundary between human and nonhuman animals.

He shows us that in order to understand the vital messages of the stories, we must go beyond a simple translation of the text and identify the themes of the stories, as well as the struggles and challenges that faced the outstanding personalities of each era: the warriors and the women, the prophets and the kings.
