Book excerpt: This is a true story about how the system of justice works to protect America's children, with the essential support of thousands of volunteers, Guardian ad Litem (GALs), also known as Court Appointed Special Advocates. We call them "Guardians without Wings." We have found the lack of proper education, the influence of secularism, and especially, poor moral upbringing, represent the fundamental causes of child abandonment, neglect and abuse. More than 75% of Americans claim to be Judeo-Christians at the beginning of this century. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights are based on Christian principles, yet many have discarded these values that are the foundation of our society. We believe that all children are born innocent and lovable! It is the parents, relatives, role models, peer group pressure, secular (and atheistic) teachers, and mainly the "culture of death", that have caused too many of these children to grow up to become dysfunctional adults, and in many cases, appalling parents. What do we mean by "culture of death" in western society? It is our growing divorce rates (over 52%); Abortion-On-Demand (50 million so far) and rise of Euthanasia; Unmarried Parents, who lack responsibility for their children; and the epidemic of illegal drug addiction problem. Some parents are clueless about the essentials of parenting. They are immature adults themselves. As one Judge said, "they are like rabbits that keep on reproducing." Should these "adults" have children, if they are morally, and psychologically unable to be loving, caring parents? You can't love, if you have not been loved as a child. The lack of spiritual formation (Jewish, Christian, among other faiths) was predominant in about 80-85% of our cases, and that represents one of the most important reasons for the breakdown of social order in our society. Conversely, we must be very careful to avoid extreme fundamentalists that will actually create further issues for our children. "If we have full employment and great economic growth ... but our children have not learned to walk in goodness, justice and mercy, then the American experiment ... will have failed." William Bennett

Book excerpt: This book is the first to outline the history of the tactic of ‘no platforming’ at British universities since the 1970s, looking at more than four decades of student protest against racist and fascist figures on campus. The tactic of ‘no platforming’ has been used at British universities and colleges since the National Union of Students adopted the policy in the mid-1970s. The author traces the origins of the tactic from the militant anti-fascism of the 1930s–1940s and looks at how it has developed since the 1970s, being applied to various targets over the last 40 years, including sexists, homophobes, right-wing politicians and Islamic fundamentalists. This book provides a historical intervention in the current debates over the alleged free speech ‘crisis’ perceived to be plaguing universities in Britain, as well as North America and Australasia. No Platform: A History of Anti-Fascism, Universities and the Limits of Free Speech is for academics and students, as well as the general reader, interested in modern British history, politics and higher education. Readers interested in contemporary debates over freedom of speech and academic freedom will also have much to discover in this book.

Book excerpt: No matter how good our lives seem to be going, we often long for a little more excitement. Sometimes we don’t realize it though until something unusual is presented to us, and we need to make some big, important decisions. In author Rick Boyle’s The Guardians: The Search for the Golden Praying Mantis, you join three teenagers who undertake an adventure of a lifetime. Seth is the star quarterback for La Jolla High School and his younger brother, Sean, is a genius. For the most part, the brothers are pleased with their lives. Then they meet their new science teacher. Miss Tia, a former college professor from New York University. When she shares a story about the elusive Golden Praying Mantis, the boys are intrigued. With the help of classmate, Amber, they go on a search for this mystical creature. And when they discover a black and white crystal, their lives are changed forever. The Guardians: The Search for the Golden Praying Mantis shows us that things are not always what they seem. Nor are people—even parents. Join Seth and Sean as they begin their journey to become Guardians of the Universe.

Book excerpt: The zombie apocalypse has already happened. Or has it? Little Mikey Freeman, the strange and disturbingly silent young loner, can see dead people and speak to them. Or at least they speak to him. Or do they? As a troubled pre-teen was he actually transformed into a blood-thirsty creature of the night by the seductive vampire pedophile babysitter from next door? Did our tragic anti-hero grow up to become a shameless and unapologetic psycho killer? Or is it all just so much psychotic rubbish, barely contained within in his own troubled head? Just one big fatalistic phantasmagoria, the guilty collective conscious of a doomed race conjured up by a lonesome prophet? Like our strange young Moody/Freeman, are we all just hopelessly . . . Lost in Time.

Book excerpt: From the notable emergence of orphan figures in late eighteenth-century literature, through early- and middle-period Victorian fiction and, as this book argues, well into the fin de siècle, this potent literary type is remarkable for its consistent recurrence and its metamorphosis as a register of cultural conditions. The striking ubiquity of orphans in the literature of these periods encourages inquiry into their metaphoric implications and the manner in which they function as barometers of burgeoning social concerns. The overwhelming majority of criticism focusing on orphans centres particularly on the form as an early- to middle-century convention, primarily found in social and domestic works; in effect, the non-traditional, aberrant, at times Gothic orphan of the fin de siècle has been largely overlooked, if not denied outright. This oversight has given rise to the need for a study of this potent cultural figure as it pertains to preoccupations characteristic of more recent instances. This book examines the noticeable difference between orphans of genre fiction of the fin de siècle and their predecessors in works including first-wave Gothic and the majority of Victorian fiction, and the variance of their symbolic references and cultural implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eminent scholar Lewis R. Gordon offers a probing meditation on freedom, justice, and decolonization. What is there to be understood and done when it is evident that the search for justice, which dominates social and political philosophy of the North, is an insufficient approach for the achievements of dignity, freedom, liberation, and revolution? Gordon takes the reader on a journey as he interrogates a trail from colonized philosophy to re-imagining liberation and revolution to critical challenges raised by Afropessimism, theodicy, and looming catastrophe. He offers not forecast and foreclosure but instead an urgent call for dignifying and urgent acts of political commitment. Such movements take the form of examining what philosophy means in Africana philosophy, liberation in decolonial thought, and the decolonization of justice and normative life. Gordon issues a critique of the obstacles to cultivating emancipatory politics, challenging reductionist forms of thought that proffer harm and suffering as conditions of political appearance and the valorization of nonhuman being. He asserts instead emancipatory considerations for occluded forms of life and the irreplaceability of existence in the face of catastrophe and ruin, and he concludes, through a discussion with the Circassian philosopher and decolonial theorist, Madina Tlostanova, with the project of shifting the geography of reason.

Book excerpt: Wizened and invigorated by their losses, fears, and ultimate triumph in the elven ruins of Kadason, the Heroes of Dragon’s Nest seek to continue the mission of their looming benefactor by traveling on to the magic-infused stronghold of Falcon Crest. Arriving in the great city, however, they find its people as distrusting of outsiders—especially those of half-breed blood—as they are enamored with their protectors; the Samanir Order and its champions. Allie, meanwhile, soon unearths details of her past that throw everything she thinks she’s learned about her nature into question, as well as the course of her future. With new allies made and even the most trusted of heroes possibly concealing secrets to shake the foundation of Falcon Crest and Covorum beyond, each of Entohika’s emissaries will be forced to question what they value most, before their own inaction might claim it from them.
