Three major notions of professionalization are examined: the manufacturing of professions in pursuit of autonomy, the rise of professionalisms embodying notions of a job well done, and the construction of renewed professionalities at the very heart of work situations and training systems.

Cet ouvrage entend ainsi contribuer à la réflexion menée sur la professionnalisation dans le champ de l’éducation et de la formation en posant un nouveau regard à travers l’analyse des diverses formes de mise en œuvre de la professionnalisation. La plupart des recherches consacrées aujourd’hui au thème de la professionnalisation dans l’enseignement supérieur tentent d’appréhender les apports et les limites des restructurations que subissent les formations en vue de répondre à des politiques prônant avec vigueur un rapprochement entre les systèmes éducatif et productif. Pour répondre à cette demande de professionnalisation, de nombreux dispositifs ont été mis en place, à travers trois modalités de formation – l’alternance, le e-learning et les parcours –, et ce avec le risque de créer une technicisation des formations qui laisse peu de place aux savoirs. L’objet de cette contribution est d’interroger ces formes de mise en œuvre visant la professionnalisation en termes d’apprentissage et surtout de voir à quelles conditions ces modalités peuvent constituer des leviers pour un développement professionnel qui s’appuie sur des savoirs. Pour développer notre réflexion, cet ouvrage s’appuie sur des terrains variés de l’enseignement supérieur (écoles professionnelles, grandes écoles, universités) qui se rapportent à différents champs professionnels : soins, formation des adultes, enseignement, gestion, conseil et recherche. Les recherches dont il est question ici couvrent trois pays différents : le Canada, l’Espagne et la France.

Author of the famous Treatise on Political Economy in 1803, which was revised and re-edited on several occasions, he published numerous other works including a voluminous Complete Course in Practical Political Economy in 1828–9. He also taught political economy successively from 1815 until his death in three Parisian establishments: the Athénée, the Conservatory of Arts and Trades, and the Collège de France. The texts in which Say exposes his approach to political economy have not been available in the English language until now except for the fourth edition of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ which serves as an introduction to the Treatise. This book presents a translation which renders his works accessible to the English speaking world. For the first time, English readers will be able to become directly immersed in Say’s principal texts, where he develops his conception of political economy. Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy proposes a translation of a selection of eleven of Say’s texts. The first three are versions of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ from the Treatise’s editions of 1803, 1814 and 1826 with the variations of the editions of 1817, 1819 and 1841. The following four texts are the opening discourses pronounced at the Conservatory in 1820 and 1828 and the Collège de France in 1831 and 1832. The eighth text is the ‘General Considerations’ which open the Complete Course in Practical Political Economy of 1828, with the variations of the 1840 re-edition. The final three texts are those Say devotes to ‘the progress of political economy’ in what is akin to a history of economic thought. This volume is of great importance to economic historians and people studying Jean-Baptiste Say, as well as those who are interested in economic theory and philosophy and political economy.

Book excerpt: By modeling pedagogical scenarios as directed geometrical graphs and proposing an associated modeling language, this book describes how rich learning activities, often designed for small classes, can be scaled up for use with thousands of participants. With the vertices of these graphs representing learning activities and the edges capturing the pedagogical relationship between activities, individual, team, and class-wide activities are integrated into a consistent whole. The workflow mechanisms modeled in the graphs enable the construction of scenarios that are richer than those currently implemented in MOOCs. The cognitive states of learners in two consecutive activities feed a transition matrix, which encapsulates the probability of succeeding in the second activity, based on success in the former. This transition matrix is summarized by a numerical value, which is used as the weight of the edge. This pedagogical framework is connected to stochastic models, with the goal of making learning analytics more appealing for data scientists. However, the proposed modeling language is not only useful in learning technologies, it also allows researchers in learning sciences to formally describe the structure of any lesson, from an elementary school lesson with 20 students to an online course with 20,000 participants.
