Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of this classic illustrated survey on the life and work of Spanish surrealist Joan Miró by historian and close friend Roland Penrose. Among the great twentieth-century masters, the surrealist painter Joan Miró stands out for the atmosphere of wit and spontaneity that pervades his work. Author and artist Roland Penrose, a friend of Miró’s for almost five decades, discusses Miró’s art through its many phases. Penrose also examines its major features—the birth of his signs and symbols; his series of anguished peintures sauvages in the 1930s; his lyrical, poetic gouaches; his monumental sculptures and ceramics; his unprecedented use of poetic titles; and his attachment to nature and the night. A brief epilogue by Eduardo de Benito, London correspondent of the Spanish art periodical Lápiz, illustrates the developments of Miró’s last years. This new revised edition, now illustrated in color throughout, includes a foreword by Antony Penrose, Roland’s son, outlining the relationship between his father and the artist, as well as updates to the bibliography.

Book excerpt: A survey of Joan Miro's career from 1918, the date of his first solo exhibition, to his last works. Its guiding thread is the idea of "Earth" in its widest sense. For Miro, "Earth" meant his native region of Catalunya, but the word also functioned for the artist as a key to certain ideas and values characteristic of rural culture such as fertility, sexuality, fable and excess. In addition, it is related to the quest for the ancestral and the primitive. In pictorial terms, the earthly can be seen as a mistrust of form and a tendency to experiment with material. These stylistic features, which the exhibition aims to highlight, allow us to see Miro as the great forerunner of Informalism and Abstract Expressionism, trends that prevailed in mid-20th-century art.

Book excerpt: This authoritative account of the life and work of Salvador Dalí, one of the most recognizable artists of the twentieth century, is revised and updated with color illustrations throughout. In this revised and updated edition of art historian Dawn Ades’s seminal study of Salvador Dalí, based on interviews with the artist, Ades examines what accounts for Dalí’s popularity, exploring such issues as the accessibility of his imagery and his talent as a self-publicist. This book reconsiders the Dali´ phenomenon, from his early years and the development of his technique and style to his relationship with the Surrealists, his exploitation of Freudian ideas, and the image that he created of himself as the mad genius artist. This new edition of Dalí is an accessible and vibrantly illustrated introduction to one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: In 1958, artist Joan Miró and critic Yvon Taillandier sat down for an in-depth discussion on Miró's life and work. Their conversation, one of the most illuminating and insightful looks into Miró's philosophy and creative process, was first published in a limited edition of seventy five copies in 1964. Though long out of print, this bilingual "treasure," in the words of Maria Popova, "remains the most direct and comprehensive record of Miró's ideas on art." This beautiful new edition presents an updated English translation of Miró's invaluable text in an elegant and striking package. In addition to Taillandier's original foreword, a new preface by preeminent Miró scholar Robert Lubar provides wider context and insight. An appendix includes the original French text in its entirety. Joan Miró: I Work Like a Gardener brings to life the words and work of one of the most beloved and influential artists of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Forgeries present a daunting problem to art historians, museums, galleries and curators who face challenges in determining the authenticity of paintings. Recent progress in science has led to the development of new methods for investigating works of art, and can provide new insights into the materials found in paintings. The rise in the value of paintings together with the knowledge and skills of forgers highlights the need to develop reliable scientific procedures to identify fakes. Given the complexity of materials in paintings and the convergence of various disciplines, a methodological approach for nvestigations of paintings is based on art historical, curatorial, aesthetic, technical and scientific evaluation. In this book sophisticated digital and analytical techniques are reviewed for the identification of materials (pigments, binders, varnishes, adhesives) and the physical characteristics of paintings such as brushstrokes, craquelure and canvas weaves. This book presents an updated overview of both non-invasive and micro-invasive techniques that enable the material characterization of paintings. The materials constituting a painting are reviewed, as are ways that changes in materials over time can provide insights into chronology and physical history. State-of the art digital metods including multi and hyper-spectral imaging and computational approaches to data treatment will be presented. Analytical techniques developed and optimized to characterize binders, varnishes, and pigments are reviewed, focusing on materials which can provide information on ageing or provenance. Case studies of applications of synchrotron-based methods and the analysis of paintings are given, as are chapters devoted to legal aspects related to authenticity. Chapter 1 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Book excerpt: Taking Joan Miró's notorious declaration of 1927--"I want to assassinate painting"--as its point of departure, this richly illustrated volume is the first to focus on Miró the "anti-painter," identifying the core practices and strategies the artist used to challenge painting between 1927 and 1937. Joan Miró Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937 surveys the various material, iconographical and rhetorical forms of Miró's attacks on painting by presenting, in chronological sequence, 12 distinct series of works, beginning with a remarkable group of paintings on unprimed canvas and concluding with Miró's return to Realism in "Still Life with Old Shoe" (1937). Acidic color, grotesque disfigurement, stylistic heterogeneity and the use of resistant, ready-made materials are among the key tactics of aggression that are explored in this extraordinary presentation of the interrelated and oppositional series of paintings, collages, objects and drawings Miró produced during this crucial decade of his long career. This volume integrates close scrutiny of Miró's materials and processes with historical and iconographic analysis, leading to an expanded understanding of the underappreciated aggressiveness of an artist long regarded as Surrealism's most lyrical painter-poet. Joan Miró was born in 1893 in Barcelona. After his first trip to Paris in 1920, and through 1931, Miró generally spent half of each year in the French capitol and half in his native Catalonia, returning to live in France after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. One of the twentieth century's greatest Modern artists, Miró created a pictorial world of intense imaginative power, in which visionary and cosmic elements are inextricably intertwined with the earthly and mundane. He died in 1983 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Book excerpt: While the simultaneously creative and destructive forces of modernity in Western Europe have been well studied, the case of Spain has often been overlooked. Visualizing Spanish Modernity concentrates on the time period 1868-1939, which marks not only the beginning of the formation of a modern economy and the consolidation of the liberal state, but also the growth of urban centers and spaces made possible by electricity, transportation, mass production and the emergence of an entertainment industry. The authors examine how mass print culture, early cinema, popular drama, photography, fashion, painting, museums and urban planning played a role in the way that Spanish society saw itself and was in turn seen by the rest of the world. Assessing how new cultural forms were instrumental in shaping Spaniards into citizens of the modern world, the authors consider such subjects as the spectacle of the body, notions of race and gender, the changing meanings of time, space and motion, the relationship between technology and everyday life and popular culture.
