Book excerpt: Mark Mathabane first came to prominence with the publication of Kaffir Boy, which became a New York Times bestseller. His story of growing up in South Africa was one of the most riveting accounts of life under apartheid. Mathabane's newest book, Miriam's Song, is the story of Mark's sister, who was left behind in South Africa. It is the gripping tale of a woman -- representative of an entire generation -- who came of age amid the violence and rebellion of the 1980s and finally saw the destruction of apartheid and the birth of a new, democratic South Africa. Mathabane writes in Miriam's voice based on stories she told him, but he has re-created her unforgettable experience as only someone who also lived through it could. The immediacy of the hardships that brother and sister endured -- from daily school beatings to overwhelming poverty -- is balanced by the beauty of their childhood observations and the true affection that they have for each other.

Our image of a classroom community in secondary education is rapidly evolving. The experience of remote learning during a pandemic has altered our mental picture of students occupying rows of desks with a teacher nearby, closely monitoring their activities. But even when teachers are able to be in physical proximity to their students, the research is clear that students need to be empowered to take ownership of their learning in order to be fully engaged. The question this book explores is: How can teachers step back, stop micromanaging, and allow students more agency? In this engaging guide, instructional specialist Miriam Plotinsky breaks hover-free teaching down into four sequential stages: mindset, deeper relationships, planning for engagement, and choice-based instruction. Her book shows how teachers can free themselves from helicopter habits and allow students greater control of their own learning, while still managing and maximizing classroom time effectively.

Book excerpt: A delightful but powerful story that offers children lifelong lessons about believing in themselves, bolstering their self-esteem, and turning the words "I Can't" into "I Can!" Molly has been chosen to be the next Star of the Day! Most kids would be excited. Molly, however, is terrified! She just can't speak in front of her class. She worries all day. She frets all night. "I can't . . . I can't," Molly convinces herself. Or can she? I Can Believe in Myself is a book that challenges children to change the way they think. Other themes in this book include compassion, confidence, and self-esteem as Molly convines her classmates--and even her teacher--that they can, indeed, change their perceptions and do things they never thought possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Hale White (1831-1913) known by his pseudonym Mark Rutherford was a British writer and civil servant. White was born in Bedford educated at Bedford Modern School. He had already served an apprenticeship to journalism before he made his name as a novelist by the three books edited by Reuben Shapcott, The Autobiography of Mark Rutherford (1881), Mark Rutherford's Deliverance (1885), and The Revolution in Tanner's Lane (1887). Later books are Miriam's Schooling and Other Papers (1890), Catharine Furze (1893), Clara Hopgood (1896), Pages from a Journal, with Other Papers (1900), and The Early Life of Mark Rutherford. Though for a long time little appreciated by the public, his novels, particularly the earlier ones, share a power and style which must always give his works a place of their own in the literary history of their time. George Orwell described Mark Rutherford's Deliverance as 'one of the best novels written in English'.
