Book Synopsis History of the Iberian Peninsula: Portuguese Rule by : Kalman Dubov
Download or read book History of the Iberian Peninsula: Portuguese Rule written by Kalman Dubov and published by Kalman Dubov. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 5 December 1496, King Manuel I signed the edict of expulsion affecting all Jews in Portugal, effective in 1497. In 1536, the Portuguese Inquisition was established, ending in 1821. These 324 years were centuries of unremitting difficulty for Jews, in Portugal itself as well as in any territory governed by Portugal. In 2015, Portugal offered dual nationality to Jews who had a connection to the country, with a path to citizenship. Portuguese requirements for citizenship differed significantly from a similar offer by Spain, making the Portuguese pathway, simpler and less complicated. This volume discusses my family's narrative showing my connection to Portugal and how I met each of the requirements for citizenship.
Book Synopsis Flori, a Pastoral Drama by : Maddalena Campiglia
Download or read book Flori, a Pastoral Drama written by Maddalena Campiglia and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first pastoral dramas published by an Italian woman, Flori is Maddalena Campiglia's most substantial surviving literary work and one of the earliest known examples of secular dramatic writing by a woman in Europe. Although acclaimed in her day, Campiglia (1553-95) has not benefited from the recent wave of scholarship that has done much to enhance the visibility and reputation of contemporaries such as Isabella Andreini, Moderata Fonte, and Veronica Franco. As this bilingual, first-ever critical edition of Flori illustrates, this neglect is decidedly unwarranted. Flori is a work of great literary and cultural interest, noteworthy in particular for the intensity of its focus on the experiences and perceptions of its female protagonists and their ideals of female autonomy. Flori will be read by those involved in the study of early modern literature and drama, women's studies, and the study of gender and sexuality in this period.

Book Synopsis Chiapas Maya Awakening by : Sean S. Sell
Download or read book Chiapas Maya Awakening written by Sean S. Sell and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-01-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico’s indigenous people speak a number of rich and complex languages today, as they did before the arrival of the Spanish. Yet a common misperception is that Mayas have no languages of their own, only dialectos, and therefore live in silence. In reality, contemporary Mayas are anything but voiceless. Chiapas Maya Awakening, a collection of poems and short stories by indigenous authors from Chiapas, Mexico, is an inspiring testimony to their literary achievements. A unique trilingual edition, it presents the contributors’ works in the living Chiapas Mayan languages of Tsotsil and Tseltal, along with English and Spanish translations. As Sean S. Sell, Marceal Méndez, and Inés Hernández-Ávila explain in their thoughtful introductory pieces, the indigenous authors of this volume were born between the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s, a time of growing cultural awareness among the native communities of Chiapas. Although the authors received a formal education, their language of instruction was Spanish, and they had to pursue independent paths to learn to read and write in their native tongues. In the book’s first half, devoted to poetry, the writers consciously speak for their communities. Their verses evoke the quetzal, the moon, and the sea and reflect the identities of those who celebrate them. The short stories that follow address aspects of modern Maya life. In these stories, mistrust and desperation yield violence among a people whose connection to the land is powerful but still precarious. Chiapas Maya Awakening demonstrates that Mayas are neither a vanished ancient civilization nor a remote, undeveloped people. Instead, through their memorable poems and stories, the indigenous writers of this volume claim a place of their own within the broader fields of national and global literature.

Book excerpt: Paradise Lost is John Milton's elaboration of Genesis into an epic poem. The poem begins with Milton's invocation to a muse for help. The action switches to hell, where Satan and his followers have been banished from heaven after trying to rebel against God. Bitter, they try to make the best of things by building the palace Pandemonium, all the while plotting whether to get revenge against God by war or trickery. After much debate, they finally decide to try to sabotage the new world of earth and mortal man that God has created. Satan sets off for earth, and meets his offspring, Sin and Death, at the gate of hell. They let him pass, and he journeys onward. Meanwhile, God sees Satan approaching earth and predicts the fall of man. When no one else does, God's Son offers to sacrifice himself to save man.

Book Synopsis Artículos de costumbres by : Daniel Muñoz Sempere
Download or read book Artículos de costumbres written by Daniel Muñoz Sempere and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an annotated critical edition of Artículos de costumbres by the Romantic journalist Mariano José de Larra (1809–37), presented with a critical introduction, study guide, glossary and chronology. Larra is still one of the most widely studied Spanish Romantic authors, and his satire of customs and manners in articles such as El castellano viejo, Vuelva usted mañana and Nochebuena de 1836 offers an insight into nineteenth century Spanish culture, while probing issues that are still seen as defining of Spanish identity today. Artículos de costumbres, presented here with an extensive annotation that identifies references that have not been previously elucidated, is a central text in the Spanish canon, opening up questions about modern Spain and issues such as political revolution, class identities, social change and the inclusion of Spain within European modernity.
