Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the miracles, parables and commandments of Jesus, presented by way of comparative study of the four gospels. Jesus is presented here as a human being, homeless and itinerant, who became son of God through renunciation, meditation which led to self-realization. He through the miracles, taught us to restrain from self-glorification, the root cause of sin, but give glory to God for all your achievements because it is not your body, but the spirit of God in you that enables you to do miracles or the works of God. Through the Parables he taught us to what is the kingdom of God and how to seek it. The Commandments, conveyed to us through the Sermon on the Mount teach us how to purify our hearts, lead a righteous life and become perfect or sons of God, who is perfect. One who realize the truth of the Sermon and live accordingly would become God on earth. It is the sum total of all ancient great religions in the world. This book is divided into three parts: the first part dealing with miracles performed by Jesus; the second with parables told by Jesus in the course of his public ministry that form part of his teachings; and the third, commandments, as contained in the Sermon on the Mount.

Mary Hoffman retells in clear, colloquial prose eight parables (including the lost sheep and the rich man?s feast) and nine miracles from the New Testament (curing the ill raising the dead, among others). Hoffman shortens and simplifies these stories for young readers without compromising their integrity. Scriptural citations are provided, along with brief notes about the retellings. Accompanying the text, Jackie Morris's brilliantly expressive illustrations transport readers to the time when and places where Jesus walked the Earth.

Book excerpt: "ALL sacred writings contain an outer and an inner meaning. Behind the literal words lies another range of meaning, another form of knowledge. According to an old-age tradition, Man once was in touch with this inner knowledge and inner meaning. There are many stories in the Old Testament which convey another knowledge, a meaning quite different from the literal sense of the words. The story of the Ark, the story of Pharaoh's butler and baker, the story of the Tower of Babel, the story of Jacob and Esau and the mess of pottage, and many others, contain an inner psychological meaning far removed from their literal level of meaning. And in the Gospels the parable is used in a similar way." -from the Preface. The New Man is an effort to elaborate the Gospels in light of this inner truth, in order to guide man along the necessary journey he must undertake to avoid violence and self-destruction.

The chapters cover various topics: 1. Restoring sight to the blind: Examining the deeper meanings through metaphors of comprehension found in Mark 8 and John 9. 2. Healing the paralyzed man: Exploring the significance of caregivers in the narrative of "Take up your pallet and walk." 3. Walking on water and calming the storm: Offering ecological interpretations of these Gospel passages. 4. Feeding the multitude: Reflecting on the symbolic importance of bread in the account of the feeding of the 5,000. 5. Raising Lazarus: Delving into the profound themes surrounding mortality and the significance of taking death seriously. The praise for "Signs and Wonders" commends AMaliba for his exceptional ability to provide insightful exegetical analysis accessible to readers of all backgrounds, whether they have formal theological training or not. AMaliba's approach is likened to a friendly conversation over tea in one's living room. He consistently emphasizes the importance of interpretation, shifting the focus from mere historical accuracy to deeper questions of meaning and relevance. By inviting readers to engage in this interpretive journey, AMaliba encourages them to consider how ancient miracle stories can offer hope and transformation in their contemporary lives. By engaging with these accounts, readers are inspired to reflect on their own lives and how they can respond to the teachings and miracles of Jesus. In his work, AMaliba skillfully bridges the gap between believers and skeptics, seamlessly linking the miracles attributed to the God of Israel with those performed by Jesus. Through poignant examples such as friends who pave the path, a desperate father pleading for his daughter, and steadfast sisters, AMaliba prompts readers to appreciate not only the healer but also the helpers and the healed. By vulnerably sharing snippets of his own journey, Maliba highlights how the miraculous can intersect with our everyday lives, reminding readers of the profound ways in which divine intervention manifests in our own experiences. "Dr. Peterson" AMaliba brings a scholarly expertise and his distinctive humor to the exploration of Jesus's miracles. His comprehensive approach provides clarity to Christians who may have found these stories confusing, offering a corrective lens rooted in a deeper understanding of Judaism. For those who have felt intimidated by these texts, AMaliba's candid approach serves as an encouragement. Moreover, he delves into various dimensions of meaning on practical, pastoral, theological, and literary levels, uncovering provocative issues such as food insecurity and gender assumptions. AMaliba urges readers to ponder the significance of these stories and challenges them to embrace transformation, inviting them to be not just observers, but truly amazed participants in the unfolding narrative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Throughout this book she calls us to the interpretive work, reminding us that the big question is not "did this happen?" but "what does it mean?" and ultimately "so what?" How can these old miracle stories speak good news to our lives in this time and place and invite our own healing and transformation along the way? – Rev. Dr. Richard Simpson, Canon to the Ordinary (Assistant to the Bishop), Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts Amy-Jill Levine is herself a sign and wonder, a sign that reading the New Testament through Jewish eyes is not just essential but revelatory, and a wonder, as she always writes with verve, wisdom, humor and rich insight. Her latest is hardly an exception, an accessible, fascinating book we welcome eagerly. – James Howell, Senior Pastor, Myers Park United Methodist Church, Charlotte, North Carolina With brilliant insight and trademark wit, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine reveals wondrous details of the most prominent miracles in the gospels. We become more than readers of these stories; we discover how to be recipients and participants in the ongoing, miraculous work of God. – Magrey R. deVega, Senior Pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Tampa, Florida, and author of The Bible Year: A Journey through Scripture in 365 Days What a rich and accessible resource for anyone who wants to grow their understanding of the Gospels and the claims they make about Jesus! AJ Levine teaches us how to learn from the miracle stories, marvel at them, worry about them, and respond to them in our own lives. – Matthew L. Skinner, Professor of New Testament, Luther Seminary Making space for the believer and skeptic alike, Levine masterfully connects the miracles of the God of Israel with the miracles of Jesus. From friends who clear the way, to a father who pleads for his daughter, to sisters who stand resolute, Levine invites the reader to cherish the helpers and the healed as much as we cherish the healer. Levine's willingness to authentically share portions of her own story reminds the reader of the ways the miraculous breaks into our own lives. –Rev. Dawn Taylor-Storm, Director of Connectional Ministry, Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, The United Methodist Church Amy-Jill Levine engages the miracles of Jesus with scholarly acumen and signature wit. Christians who have been confused by these stories will find new clarity in her comprehensive context, including corrective understandings of Judaism. Those who have been intimidated by these texts will be encouraged by her candor. Those who have been inspired by Jesus’ miracles will find even deeper dimensions of meaning in the practical, pastoral, theological, and literary levels she opens and the provocative issues raised, from food insecurity to gender assumptions. Levine presses the essential “so what?” question and challenges us to be changed by these stories – and to be amazed. – The Rev. Deborah A. Block, D.Min. Pastor, Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for specialized books on the gospels is apparent when one considers the variety of their contents. The four gospels are similar to the Greek bíos ("a life," a kind of biography), but in the format of the Old Testament historical narratives. As such they give us a selective history of the person, life, and works of Jesus the Christ. Within that history are the stories Jesus told and the miracles he performed. Focusing the study on the parables Jesus told and miracles he worked allows the Bible student to become prepared for the study of the gospels as a whole.
