Book Synopsis Racism in the United States by : Meyer Weinberg
Download or read book Racism in the United States written by Meyer Weinberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1990-05-21 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the most comprehensive book-length bibliography on the subject of racism available in the United States. Compiler Meyer Weinberg has surveyed a wide-ranging group of material and classified it under 87 subject headings, drawing on articles, books, congressional hearings and reports, theses and dissertations, research reports, and investigative journalism. Historical references cover the long history of racism, while the heightened awareness and activity of the recent past is also addressed in detail. In addition to works that fit the narrow definition of racism as a mode of oppression or group denial of rights based on color, Weinberg includes references dealing with sexism, antisemitism, economic exploitation, and similar forms of dehumanization. References are grouped under a series of subject headings that include Civil Rights, Desegregation, Housing, Socialism and Racism, Unemployment, and Violence against Minorities. Items which do not have self-explanatory titles are annotated, and virtually every section is thoroughly cross-referenced. Also included is one section of carefully selected references on racism in countries other than the United States. Unlike the remainder of the book, this section is not comprehensive, but rather provides an opportunity to view racism comparatively. The volume concludes with an author index. This work will be a significant addition to both academic and public libraries, as well as an important resource for courses in racism, sociology, and black history.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) report examines the impact of a broad range of behavioral, societal, and health care issues concerning the health of US blacks and minorities on current departmental program areas. Six topics were identified as priority areas: cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke, chemical dependency (alcohol, illicit drugs, cigarettes) diabetes, homicide and accidents, and infant mortality. Subcommittee summary reports are intended for each of these 6 areas. Data also are presented on the social characteristics of minority populations, mortality and morbidity indicators, health services and resources, an inventory of DHHS program efforts, and a survey of non-federal organizations. Recommendations are provided for health information and education, health services, health professions development, cooperative efforts, data development, and research needs. (wz).

Book Synopsis Caring by the Hour by : Karen Brodkin
Download or read book Caring by the Hour written by Karen Brodkin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen Sacks offers the first detailed account of the hospital industry's nonprofessional support staff---their roles in day-to-day health care delivery, and why they fought so tenaciously throughout the 1970s to unionize. This case study of the relationships between work life and unionization in Duke medical Center highlights women's activism in general and black women's leadership in particular. In addition to an analysis of the dynamics of women's activism, Caring by the Hour provides a comparative study of Duke Medical Center's treatment of both black and white female workers. Sacks links patterns of racial segregation in clerical jobs to the relationship between race, working conditions, and unequal opportunities for black and white women, and to their differing work cultures and patterns of public militance. She also discusses recent changes in service, clerical, and professional work and their effects on white and black women, placing them in the context of national changes in health funding and policies.
