Book excerpt: Seventy-five years after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, here for the first time is the remarkable story of one of its enduring cornerstones, the Works Progress Administration (WPA): its passionate believers, its furious critics, and its amazing accomplishments. The WPA is American history that could not be more current, from providing economic stimulus to renewing a broken infrastructure. Introduced in 1935 at the height of the Great Depression, when unemployment and desperation ruled the land, this controversial nationwide jobs program would forever change the physical landscape and social policies of the United States. The WPA lasted eight years, spent $11 billion, employed 8½ million men and women, and gave the country not only a renewed spirit but a fresh face. Now this fascinating and informative book chronicles the WPA from its tumultuous beginnings to its lasting presence, and gives us cues for future action.

Book Synopsis Dubious Alliance by : John Earl Haynes
Download or read book Dubious Alliance written by John Earl Haynes and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dubious Alliance was first published in 1984. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The formation of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party of Minnesota took place in a context of intense factional struggle that lasted from the death of Governor Floyd B. Olson in 1936 to the election of Hubert Humphrey to the U.S. Senate in 1948. Dubious Alliance, the first full account of this critical chapter in the state's political history, has wider significance not only because many of the leading figures in the story have played a role in national politics, but also because it deals with issues—chief among them, the origins of Cold War liberalism— that matter far beyond the boundaries of a single state. John Haynes follows the struggle from its inception to the postwar battle within the new DFL between Popular Front adherents and anti-Communist liberals led by Minneapolis Mayor Hubert Humphrey. He makes clear that the struggle with the Popular Front was the formative political experience of Humphrey's generation; those who fought with him, and who became active in national politics—Orville Freeman, Eugene McCarthy, Walter Mondale, Donald Fraser—did not seriously question Cold War foreign policy till well into the Vietnam era. Thorough and dispassionate, this book will help today's readers better understand the DFL's birth and the struggle that surrounded it—complex events long obscured by Cold War fears and political myth-making. John Earl Haynes is a historian by training—he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota—and also a specialist in tax policy. He was an adviser to Governor Wendell Anderson and later served as a congressional aide to Anderson and to Representative Martin Sabo. Haynes is now Director of Tax and Credit Analysis for the state of Minnesota.

Book Synopsis Packinghouse Daughter by : Cheri Register
Download or read book Packinghouse Daughter written by Cheri Register and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violence that erupted when the company "replaced" its union workers with strikebreakers tested family loyalty and community stability, and attracted national attention when the governor of Minnesota called in the National Guard, declared martial law, and closed the plant. Register skillfully interweaves her own memories, historical research, and first-person interviews of participants on both sides of the strike into a narrative that is thoughtful and impassioned about the value of blue-collar work and the dignity of those who do it. Packinghouse Daughter also testifies to the hold that childhood experience has on personal values and notions of social class, despite the upward mobility that is the great promise of American democracy.
Book Synopsis The Government of Minnesota, Its History and Administration (Classic Reprint) by : Frank L. McVey
Download or read book The Government of Minnesota, Its History and Administration (Classic Reprint) written by Frank L. McVey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of Minnesota, Its History and Administration It has been the purpose of the author to present in a small volume a harmonious picture of the history and government of the commonwealth of Minnesota. There is a pressing and crying need for good teaching in civil government, a subject which has been and is largely neglected in our public schools. To facilitate such teaching carefully prepared books are necessary. This volume is an attempt thoroughly to analyze the functions of a State government, and in addition to open the way to teacher and pupil to the sources of information. At the foot of many pages are numerous references, while at the end of the book is an appendix containing historical material for more extensive work than the text affords. With such aid the teacher can go back of text-book statement into the spirit of our commonwealth's institutions. The effort in Chapters I and II is to place the history of the State before the student; following these chapters are two others on the general machinery of the government. The remainder of the book is devoted to the actual workings of the machinery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
