Book excerpt: For the past several years, Advatech Pacific has been maintaining and enhancing the COLISEUM plume simulation environment under the direction of AFRL/PRSS. COLISEUM is a software environment used to model the propagation of a plasma plume and its interactions with solid surfaces (including both sputtering and re-deposition). A recent addition to the capabilities of COLISEUM is its integration with ModelCenter, the optimization and integration framework developed by Phoenix Integration. With the help of ModelCenter, the thrust directions of four Hall Effect Thrusters (HETs) for a representative satellite geometry are optimized such that the overall sputtering on the solar panels is minimized, subject to performance constraints on the overall thrust and torque. The satellite is assumed to be in a geosynchronous orbit, with the solar panels always facing the sun. Different positions in the satellite's orbit are considered, as is a case where one thruster is disabled. All cases considered showed smooth convergence behavior, and sputtering on the solar panels could be reduced significantly while meeting all performance constraints.

The first part is the study of plume flows escaping into vacuum, and the second part deals with gasdroplet flows. These two parts are united by a common area of research, namely, contamination problems of space station surfaces due to thruster firing. The objective of the first part is accurate prediction of force and heat loads and contamination due to interaction of thruster plumes with the spacecraft surface. This requires a detailed knowledge of the plume structure. For this purpose, a software system SMILE (Statistical Modeling In Low-density Environment) is developed for modeling plume flows. This system is based on the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method and incorporates economical numerical schemes of the DSMC method majorant frequency scheme, advanced models that describe energy transfer in the case of collisions of diatomic and polyatomic molecules, possibilities of parallelization, and models for chemically reacting flows of polyatomic gases. An important aspect associated with this activity is the use of advanced object-oriented approaches for the development of the SMILE system. The objective of the second part is an experimental and numerical study of a two-phase gas-droplet flow arising in the case of simultaneous exhaustion of liquid and gas into vacuum. This problem is closely related to the processes of backflow contamination of spacecraft surfaces by thruster plumes with a fuel film used for cooling the inner surface of the nozzle. The main attention is paid to studying the behavior of droplets into which the liquid is decomposed at the initial stage of droplet motion and to the interaction of droplets with a freely expanding gas plume.

Book excerpt: The objective of the Hall effect thruster plume contamination and erosion study was to evaluate the impact of a xenon ion plume on various samples placed in the vicinity of a Hall effect thruster for a continuous 100 hour exposure. NASA Glenn Research Center was responsible for the pre- and post-test evaluation of three sample types placed around the thruster: solar cell cover glass, RTV silicone, and Kapton(R). Mass and profilometer), were used to identify the degree of deposition and/or erosion on the solar cell cover glass, RTV silicone, and Kapton@ samples. Transmittance, reflectance, solar absorptance, and room temperature emittance were used to identify the degree of performance degradation of the solar cell cover glass samples alone. Auger spectroscopy was used to identify the chemical constituents found on the surface of the exposed solar cell cover glass samples. Chemical analysis indicated some boron nitride contamination on the samples, from boron nitride insulators used in the body of the thruster. However, erosion outweighted contamination. All samples exhibited some degree of erosion. with the most erosion occurring near the centerline of the plume and the least occurring at the +/- 90 deg positions. For the solar cell cover glass samples, erosion progressed through the antireflective coating and into the microsheet glass itself. Erosion occurred in the solar cell cover glass, RTV silicone and Kapton(R) at different rates. All optical properties changed with the degree of erosion, with solar absorptance and room temperature emittance increasing with erosion. The transmittance of some samples decreased while the reflectance of some samples increased and others decreased.
