Book Synopsis Botticelli Past and Present by : Ana Debenedetti
Download or read book Botticelli Past and Present written by Ana Debenedetti and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent exhibitions dedicated to Botticelli around the world show, more than ever, the significant and continued debate about the artist. Botticelli Past and Present engages with this debate. The book comprises four thematic parts, spanning four centuries of Botticelli’s artistic fame and reception from the fifteenth century. Each part comprises a number of essays and includes a short introduction which positions them within the wider scholarly literature on Botticelli. The parts are organised chronologically beginning with discussion of the artist and his working practice in his own time, moving onto the progressive rediscovery of his work from the late eighteenth to the turn of the twentieth century, through to his enduring impact on contemporary art and design. Expertly written by researchers and eminent art historians and richly illustrated throughout, the broad range of essays in this book make a valuable contribution to Botticelli studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book deals with a paper reconstruction of Pliny the Younger' s (c. AD 61-112) villa near Ostia, some twenty kilometres from Rome. This unique work was created in Rome in the years 1777-78 by a young Pole, Count Stanisław Potocki (1755-1821) in cooperation with Giuseppe Manocchi and other outstanding artists of the time. The work, originally in the Potocki collection in Wilanów, is today housed in the iconographic collection of the National Library, Warsaw. It contains over thirty large-format drawings (57.789.5 cm) in colour. Just before the close of the 18th century, probably during his last sojourn in Italy (1795-97), Count Potocki wrote a 24-page-long commentary to his work, entitled Notes et Idées sur la Villa de Pline. This hitherto unpublished manuscript commentary and reconstruction drawings of the villa are now published together with a virtual visualisation of the villa produced in 3D Studio Max 2014."--

Download or read book Germanicus written by Lindsay Powell and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The story of a Roman Emperor that might have been” (Fighting Times). Germanicus was regarded by many Romans as a hero in the mold of Alexander the Great. His untimely death, in suspicious circumstances, ended the possibility of a return to a more open republic. This, the first modern biography of Germanicus, is in parts a growing-up story, a history of war, a tale of political intrigue, and a murder mystery. In this highly readable, fast paced account, historical detective Lindsay Powell details Germanicus’s campaigns and battles in Illyricum and Germania; tracks him on his epic tour of the Eastern Mediterranean to Armenia and down the Nile; evaluates the possible causes of his death; and reports on the cruel fate his wife, Agrippina, and their children suffered at the hands of Praetorian Guard commander, and Tiberius’s infamous deputy, Aelius Sejanus.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Love by : Francesco Patrizi
Download or read book The Philosophy of Love written by Francesco Patrizi and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrizi's Philosophy of Love is both a remarkably detailed description of one of the most famous woman scholars of the sixteenth century, Tarquinia Molza, and also a strikingly modern elucidation of the origins of love. Nearly one-half of the book is devoted to a detailed description of Molza, her education, her talents as a musician, poet, and philosopher. In the second half of the book, Molza "teaches" Patrizi her philosophy of love: that "all love emanates from the love we have for ourselves." Readers interested in both the status of women in the Renaissance as well as those interested in the early roots of contemporary "self-psychology" will find this book illuminating.
