Book Synopsis Niccol Di Lorenzo Della Magna and the Social World of Florentine Printing, Ca. 1470Ð1493 by : Lorenz Bninger
Download or read book Niccol Di Lorenzo Della Magna and the Social World of Florentine Printing, Ca. 1470Ð1493 written by Lorenz Bninger and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history of one of the foremost printers of the Renaissance explores how the Age of Print came to Italy. Lorenz Bninger offers a fresh history of the birth of print in Italy through the story of one of its most important figures, Niccol di Lorenzo della Magna. After having worked for several years for a judicial court in Florence, Niccol established his business there and published a number of influential books. Among these were Marsilio FicinoÕs De christiana religione, Leon Battista AlbertiÕs De re aedificatoria, Cristoforo LandinoÕs commentaries on DanteÕs Commedia, and Francesco BerlinghieriÕs Septe giornate della geographia. Many of these books were printed in vernacular Italian. Despite his prominence, Niccol has remained an enigma. A meticulous historical detective, Bninger pieces together the thorough portrait that scholars have been missing. In doing so, he illuminates not only NiccolÕs life but also the Italian printing revolution generally. Combining Renaissance studiesÕ traditional attention to bibliographic and textual concerns with a broader social and economic history of printing in Renaissance Italy, Bninger provides an unparalleled view of the business of printing in its earliest years. The story of Niccol di Lorenzo furnishes a host of new insights into the legal issues that printers confronted, the working conditions in printshops, and the political forces that both encouraged and constrained the publication and dissemination of texts.

The first, by Laurence B. Kanter, presents an overview of Florentine illumination between 1300 and 1450 and thumbnail sketches of the artists featured in this volume. The second essay, by Barbara Drake Boehm, focuses on the types of books illuminators helped to create. Book Synopsis Studies in the Transmission of Latin Texts by : S. P. Oakley
Download or read book Studies in the Transmission of Latin Texts written by S. P. Oakley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volumes offers a study of all known manuscripts and incunabular editions of four classical texts: Vitruvius' De architectura, Cato's De agri cultura, Varro's De re rustica, Porphyrio's Commentary on Horace, and Priscian's Periegesis. The total number of witnesses involved comes to over 200; many of the manuscripts were produced in France or Italy, but English, German, Polish, and Swiss manuscripts also feature. For each text, the genealogical affiliations of its manuscript copies are determined (in many cases for the first time), as is the manner in which each was dispersed throughout medieval Europe and transmitted from antiquity through the Middle Ages to the first printed editions. S. P. Oakley shows that clear and decisive results can be achieved by application of the so-called stemmatic method and establishes which manuscripts future editors should use in editing these texts. Manuscripts that are not needed by future editors are discussed as fully as those that are, and many localizations and derivations are established. The result is a detailed study that deepens knowledge of the transmission of classical Latin texts, especially in the Renaissance, of scribal practice, and of techniques that can be deployed in the genealogical study of manuscripts and incunables.
Book Synopsis Nuns' Chronicles and Convent Culture in Renaissance and Counter-Reformation Italy by : K. J. P. Lowe
Download or read book Nuns' Chronicles and Convent Culture in Renaissance and Counter-Reformation Italy written by K. J. P. Lowe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated and innovative book analyses convent culture in sixteenth-century Italy through the medium of three unpublished nuns' chronicles. It uses a comparative methodology of 'connected differences' to examine the intellectual and imaginative achievement of these nuns, and to investigate how they fashioned and preserved individual and convent identities by writing chronicles. The chronicles themselves reveal many examples of nuns' agency, especially with regard to cultural creativity, and show that convent traditions determined cultural priorities and specialisms, and dictated the contours of convent ceremonial life.
Book Synopsis Imago Triumphalis by : Margaret Ann Zaho
Download or read book Imago Triumphalis written by Margaret Ann Zaho and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imago Triumphalis: The Function and Significance of Triumphal Imagery for Renaissance Rulers examines how independent rulers in fifteenth-century Italy used the motif of the Roman triumph for self-aggrandizement and personal expression. Triumphal imagery, replete with connotations of victory and splendor, was recognized during the Renaissance as a reflection of the glory of classical antiquity. Its appeal as a powerful visual bearer of meaning is evidenced by its appearance as a dominant theme in literature, architecture, and art. Rulers such as Alfonso of Aragon, Federico da Montefeltro, Sigismondo Malatesta, and Borso d'Este chose to incorporate the triumphal motif in major artistic commissions in which they were represented. They recognized that the image of the triumph could retain its classical associations while functioning as a highly personalized commentary.
