Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zheng family of merchants and militarists emerged from the tumultuous seventeenth century amid a severe economic depression, a harrowing dynastic transition from the ethnic Chinese Ming to the Manchu Qing, and the first wave of European expansion into East Asia. Under four generations of leaders over six decades, the Zheng had come to dominate trade across the China Seas. Their average annual earnings matched, and at times exceeded, those of their fiercest rivals: the Dutch East India Company. Although nominally loyal to the Ming in its doomed struggle against the Manchus, the Zheng eventually forged an autonomous territorial state based on Taiwan with the potential to encompass the family's entire economic sphere of influence. Through the story of the Zheng, Xing Hang provides a fresh perspective on the economic divergence of early modern China from western Europe, its twenty-first-century resurgence, and the meaning of a Chinese identity outside China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizenship is traditionally viewed as a legal status to be possessed. Cultivating Membership in Taiwan and Beyond: Relational Citizenship proposes the concept of relational citizenship to articulate the value-laden, interactive nature of belongingness. Hsin-I Cheng examines the role of relationality which produces and is a product of localized emotions. Cheng attends to particular histories and global trajectories embedded within uneven power relations. By focusing on Taiwan, a non-Western society with a tradition to adeptly attune to local experiences and those from various global influences, relational citizenship highlights the measures used to define and encourage interactions with newcomers. This book shows the multilayered communicative processes in which relations are gradually created, challenged, merged, disrupted, repaired, and solidified. Cheng further argues that this concept is not bound to nation-state geographic boundaries as relationality bleeds through national borders. Relational citizenship has the potential to move beyond the East vs. West epistemology to examine peoples’ lived realities wherein the sense of belonging is discursively accomplished, viscerally experienced, and publicly performed.

Book excerpt: What is War Scythe There is a type of polearm known as a war scythe or military scythe. This type of polearm has a single-edged blade that curves inward and has the cutting edge on the concave side of the blade. The war scythe is a purpose-built infantry combat weapon that retains a superficial resemblance to the blade of an agricultural scythe, from which it is assumed to have evolved. However, the war scythe is completely unconnected to agricultural tools and is a weapon that was designed specifically for use by soldiers. In addition to having flats that are proportioned in a regular manner, the blade of a war scythe has a thickness that is comparable to that of a spear or sword blade, and it has a tiny curve along its edge as it narrows toward its point. There is a distinction between this and farming scythes, which have blades that are extremely thin and unevenly bent. These blades are designed specifically for cutting grass and wheat, and thus are not appropriate for use as blades for improvised spears or polearms. How you will benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: War Scythe Chapter 2: Polearm Chapter 3: Halberd Chapter 4: Sabre Chapter 5: Dao (Chinese sword) Chapter 6: Scythe Chapter 7: Bill (weapon) Chapter 8: Sickle Chapter 9: Glaive Chapter 10: Kopis (II) Answering the public top questions about war scythe. Who this book is for Professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and those who want to go beyond basic knowledge or information for any kind of War Scythe.
