This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minerals are part of virtually every product we use. Common examples include copper used in electrical wiring and titanium used to make airplane frames and paint pigments. The Information Age has ushered in a number of new mineral uses in a number of products including cell phones (e.g., tantalum) and liquid crystal displays (e.g., indium). For some minerals, such as the platinum group metals used to make cataytic converters in cars, there is no substitute. If the supply of any given mineral were to become restricted, consumers and sectors of the U.S. economy could be significantly affected. Risks to minerals supplies can include a sudden increase in demand or the possibility that natural ores can be exhausted or become too difficult to extract. Minerals are more vulnerable to supply restrictions if they come from a limited number of mines, mining companies, or nations. Baseline information on minerals is currently collected at the federal level, but no established methodology has existed to identify potentially critical minerals. This book develops such a methodology and suggests an enhanced federal initiative to collect and analyze the additional data needed to support this type of tool.

From its position as one of Africa's major investors, and a top provider of development assistance, Tokyo's quiet diplomacy is having a growing impact on African affairs. This book illuminates the challenges facing the prospective partnership, and deconstructs the international political economy of this relationship. Furthermore, through a series of comparative studies, it explores the relevance of the content of the East Asian experience of South Africa and the continent as a whole. Features include: - an innovative study of the international political economy of an increasingly important relationship between Asia and Africa - an original analysis of the comparative dimensions of East Asia and Southern Africa's respective experiences in development - contextualizes the South African and Japanese experiences within the contemporary globalization debate The book is suitable for students and courses in international relations, development studies and comparative politics, as well as African and Asian studies.

A mineral-supply data tabulation and a basic mineral-location map is provided for most of the countries reviewed. There are also more than a hundred additional mineral or industrial maps and photographs. A general regional view of Asia’s people, history, products, economies, resources, basic industries, and development problems is accompanied by charts and tabulations describing each area’s relative importance as a mineral producer, consumer, importer, and exporter. Each country-chapter is organized according to the following categories: significance of minerals, mineral supply position, nature of mineral enterprise, principal mineral industries, mine and industry workers, mineral transport, energy and power, and summary outlook.

Book excerpt: Questions the widespread assertion that Japanese government bureaucrats weed declining industries out of the market by adjusting economic policies, and are effectively insulated from political pressure for protecting those interests. Finds indeed that players from industry and labor in fact have a great deal of influence in policy making. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
