Book Synopsis Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland by : Harold Williams
Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Harold Williams and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Canadian Appalachian region. The chapter on the East Greenland Caledonides stands alone and there is no attempt to integrate the geological accounts of the two far removed regions. Rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region are described under four broad temporal divisions: lower Paleozoic and older, middle Paleozoic, upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. The rocks of these temporal divisions define geographic zones, belts, basins, and graben, respectively. The area is of special interest because so many modern concepts of mountain building are based on Appalachian rocks & structures.

Book Synopsis The Role of Halogens in Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Geochemical Processes by : Daniel E. Harlov
Download or read book The Role of Halogens in Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Geochemical Processes written by Daniel E. Harlov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 1029 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes the knowledge and experiences concerning the role of halogens during various geochemical processes, such as diagenesis, ore-formation, magma evolution, metasomatism, mineralization, and metamorphism in the crust and mantle of the Earth. It comprises the role of halogens in other terrestrial worlds like volatile-rich asteroids, Mars, and the ice moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Review chapters outline and expand upon the basis of our current understanding regarding how halogens contribute to the geochemical/geophysical evolution and stability of terrestrial worlds overall.
Book Synopsis Monteregian Treasures by : Joseph Anthony Mandarino
Download or read book Monteregian Treasures written by Joseph Anthony Mandarino and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989-03-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandarino and Anderson are the first to bring together all of the known data on this classic mineral locality, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec. This site is one of the most important sources of rare and beautiful minerals in the world. The location is outstanding, both for the rarity of its minerals anf the number of its mineral species. Over 200 mineral species have been identified a Mont Saint-Hilaire, including some found nowhere else or located only in remote areas of the earth. The numerous mineral species found at Mont Saint-Hilaire are described in detail and handsomely illustrated in almost 200 color and black-and-white photomicrographs, sketches, and crystal drawings. The text consists mostly of mineral description and addresses the interests of amateur and professional mineralogists alike. Five appendices present specialized technical data on unit cell parameters, X-ray powder diffraction, occurrence, mineral classification, and chemical analysis for the professional. The book will be a valuable aid to the reader in the identificaton and collection of minerals.

Book Synopsis The Periodic Table: Nature's Building Blocks by : J. Theo Kloprogge
Download or read book The Periodic Table: Nature's Building Blocks written by J. Theo Kloprogge and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 931 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Periodic Table: Nature’s Building Blocks: An Introduction to the Naturally Occurring Elements, Their Origins and Their Uses addresses how minerals and their elements are used, where the elements come from in nature, and their applications in modern society. The book is structured in a logical way using the periodic table as its outline. It begins with an introduction of the history of the periodic table and a short introduction to mineralogy. Element sections contain their history, how they were discovered, and a description of the minerals that contain the element. Sections conclude with our current use of each element. Abundant color photos of some of the most characteristic minerals containing the element accompany the discussion. Ideal for students and researchers working in inorganic chemistry, minerology and geology, this book provides the foundational knowledge needed for successful study and work in this exciting area. Describes the link between geology, minerals and chemistry to show how chemistry relies on elements from nature Emphasizes the connection between geology, mineralogy and daily life, showing how minerals contribute to the things we use and in our modern economy Contains abundant color photos of each mineral that bring the periodic table to life

Book Synopsis Phoscorites and Carbonatites from Mantle to Mine: the Key Example of the Kola Alkaline Province by : F. Wall
Download or read book Phoscorites and Carbonatites from Mantle to Mine: the Key Example of the Kola Alkaline Province written by F. Wall and published by The Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoscorites are dark, often very handsome, sometimes economically valuable, magnetite-apatite-silicate rocks, almost always associated with carbonatite. They are key to understanding the longstanding question of how carbonate and carbonate-bearing magmas rise to the crust and the Earths surface. Despite this, they have been given little attention; a search on geological literature databases will produce thousands of references to carbonatite (up to 4125 on Georef) but not more than thirty references to phoscorite. This book goes some way to redress this balance. Over recent years many European and North American scientists have studied Kola rocks in collaboration with Russian colleagues. The idea for this book came from one such project funded by the European organisation, INTAS (Grant No 97-0722). The Kola Peninsula is one of the outstanding areas in the World for the concentration and economic importance of alkaline rocks. However, Russian work on the Kola complexes is still relatively unknown and a particular aim of this book, as well as presenting current research, is to make this knowledge accessible to English language readers. A large exploration programme on Kola alkaline rocks was active from 1950 to 1990 and involved teams of geologists who studied many kilometres of drill core and carried out detailed mineralogical and petrological studies.
