Different types of wireless and PLC technologies used for indoor IoT applications are described. The channel models for both wireless and power line communications are introduced, highlighting the main challenges for these types of communications inside the indoor environment. The book explores the hybrid technologies with television white space (TVWS), very high frequency (VHF) wireless technology, and broadband PLC (BPLC) for indoor high speed IoT networks. A TVWS standardized BPLC system is proposed, which integrates the requirement of primary user sensing and the permissible transmission power spectral density (PSD) for TVWS users into BPLC standard, regarding VHF band access. The hybrid ultra-high frequency (UHF) wireless-powerline sensor networks with a focus on enlarging the network lifetime via cross-layer optimization is presented. Hybrid video sensor networks (HVSNs) with high data rate requirement are explored. Through the joint design of video encoding rate, aggregate power consumption, channel access control, along with link rate allocation, a distributed algorithm is developed, which divides the computational burden among all nodes with much lower communication overhead. The effectiveness of the cross-layer designs are evaluated through extensive simulation results.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on techniques that can be applied at the physical and data-link layers of communication systems in order to secure transmissions against eavesdroppers. Topics ranging from information theory-based security to coding for security and cryptography are discussed, with presentation of cutting-edge research and innovative results from leading researchers. The characteristic feature of all the contributions is their relevance for practical embodiments: detailed consideration is given to applications of security principles to a variety of widely used communication techniques such as multiantenna systems, ultra-wide band communication systems, power line communications, and quantum key distribution techniques. A further distinctive aspect is the attention paid to both unconditional and computational security techniques, providing a bridge between two usually distinct worlds. The book comprises extended versions of contributions delivered at the Workshop on Communication Security, held in Ancona, Italy, in September 2014 within the framework of the research project "Enhancing Communication Security by Cross-layer Physical and Data-link Techniques", funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research.

Book excerpt: Power Line Communication (PLC) is a well-established technology that allows the transmission of data through electrical wires. A key advantage of PLC is its low cost of deployment when the electrical wiring infrastructure already exists, enabling it to compete or work in conjunction with wireless technologies. PLC has recently received growing attention and significant investments within the development of the Smart Grid (SG), that in turn requires sophisticated data exchange and communication. This book presents a comprehensive introduction to the principals involved in the use of narrowband and broadband PLC technologies in the SG, and to using these technologies particularly when intermittent renewable energies sources are employed. Chapters cover fundamental concepts of modern digital communications, the main coding techniques, specific characteristics of the PLC channels, the fundamentals of the SG, and the differences between the narrowband and broadband technologies for SG applications. The work covers the main standards and several related state-of-the-art works, as well as some key aspects of the use of renewable energy sources. Power Line Communication Systems for Smart Grids is essential reading for researchers, professionals and graduate students involved with the study and development of PLC systems, SG and related subjects.

Exploiting multipath scattering, MIMO techniques deliver significant performance enhancements in terms of data transmission rate and interference reduction. This 2007 book is a detailed introduction to the analysis and design of MIMO wireless systems. Beginning with an overview of MIMO technology, the authors then examine the fundamental capacity limits of MIMO systems. Transmitter design, including precoding and space-time coding, is then treated in depth, and the book closes with two chapters devoted to receiver design. Written by a team of leading experts, the book blends theoretical analysis with physical insights, and highlights a range of key design challenges. It can be used as a textbook for advanced courses on wireless communications, and will also appeal to researchers and practitioners working on MIMO wireless systems.
