Book excerpt: Buried under the weight of an empire in peril, will she sink, or will she rise? For weeks, Haelo Marley has done everything she could to prepare herself to be the queen her people need. She’s trained, worked, pushed herself beyond all expectations, and most of all, distracted herself from thinking about the man she’s marrying—and the one she’s not. In the last days before her wedding, Haelo’s confidence is shaken in more ways than one, until she finds the clarity she needs from sources she never would have expected. But just when Haelo is starting to hope for a bright future, Massáude’s dark shadow returns to smother the Candeon Empire. And this time, he’s threatening to bring the monarchy to its knees. Sacrifice after sacrifice, Haelo fights to save her people. As the losses mount, Haelo must decide how far she’s willing to go to win this war. Her pain could bury her—or it could allow her to rise higher than ever before. Either way, time is running out. Fans of paranormal suspense, ancient folklore, and slow-burn romance will love this epic, coming-of-age fantasy series about the battle between the things we love, the things we choose, and the things that are chosen for us. This book is part of a series meant to be read in order. You can find Book One, Hiding Haelo, and Book Two, Haelo Hunted, wherever you buy books.

Book excerpt: Attending – patient contemplation focused on a particular being – is a central ethical activity that has not been recognized by any of the main moral systems in the European philosophical tradition. That tradition has imagined that the moral agent is primarily a problem solver and world changer when what might be needed most is a witness. Moral theory has been agonized by dualism – motivation is analyzed into beliefs and desires, descriptions of facts and dissatisfactions with them, while action is represented as an effort to lessen dissatisfaction by altering the empirical world. In Attending Warren Heiti traces an alternative genealogy of ethics, drawing from the Platonism recovered by Simone Weil and developed in the work of Iris Murdoch, John McDowell, and Jan Zwicky. According to Weil, virtue is knowledge, knowledge is embodied, and the knower is nested in an ecosystem of relationships. Instead of analyzing and solving theoretical problems, Heiti aims to clarify the terrain by setting up objects of attention from more than one discipline, including not only philosophy but also literature, psychology, film, and visual art. The traditional picture captures one important type of ethical activity: faced with a moral problem, one looks to a general rule to furnish the solution. But not all problems conform to this model. Heiti offers an alternative: to see what is needed, one attends to the particular being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting (1979), Syd Field first popularized the Three-Act Paradigm of Setup, Confrontation and Resolution for conceptualizing and creating the Hollywood screenplay. For Field, the budding screenwriter needs a clear screenplay structure, one which includes two well-crafted plot points, the first at the end of Act I, the second at the end of Act II. By focusing on the importance of the four essentials of beginning and end, and the two pivotal plot points, Field did the Hollywood film industry an enormous service. Nonetheless, although he handles the issue of overall structure expertly, Field falls down when offering the screenwriter advice on how to successfully build each of the three individual Acts. This is because Field did not recognize the importance of another layer of analysis that underpins the existence of plot points. This is the level of the plot genotype. This book will offer you a richer theory of plot structure than the one Field outlines. It will do this not by contradicting anything Field has to say about the Hollywood paradigm, but by complementing it with a deeper level of analysis. Plot genotypes are the compositional schemas of particular stories. They are sets of instructions, written in the language of the plot function, for executing particular plots. This book outlines the plot genotypes for The Frog Prince, The Robber Bridegroom, Puss-in-Boots, and Little Red Riding Hood and then shows how these genotypes provide the underpinnings for the film screenplays of Pretty Woman, Wrong Turn, The Mask, and Psycho. By means of a detailed study of these four Hollywood screenplays, you will be able to offer a much richer description of what is going on at any particular point in a screenplay. In this way, you will become much sharper at understanding how screenplays work. And you will become much better at learning how to write coherent screenplays yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970s Italy, after the decline of the Spaghetti Western, crime films became the most popular, profitable and controversial genre. In a country plagued with violence, political tensions and armed struggle, these films managed to capture the anxiety and anger of the times in their tales of tough cops, ruthless criminals and urban paranoia. Recent years have seen renewed critical interest in the genre, thanks in part to such illustrious fans as Quentin Tarantino. This book examines all of the 220+ crime films produced in Italy between 1968 and 1980, the period when the genre first appeared and grew to its peak. Entries include a complete cast and crew list, home video releases, a plot summary and the author's own analysis. Excerpts from a variety of sources are included: academic texts, contemporary reviews, and interviews with filmmakers, scriptwriters and actors. There are many onset stills and film posters.

Zander is making the right decisions to fight the indifference that has shaped his life. When one of those decisions leaves him temporarily homeless, he never expected to gain a new friend. Nessa is real, she’s honest, and she believes in him. Zander longs to be authentic. He’s been pretending, playing a part, for as long as he can remember. But Nessa is pretending, too. Pretending she isn’t exhausted, that the world isn’t too loud, and that she doesn’t have a book full of notes that might explain why she’s always been a little different. As she's learning to trust herself, she might even realise that she doesn't need to hide who she is. All The Wrong Shelves can be read as a standalone. It’s book two in The Without Filter Series. All The Wrong Shelves is a low-angst, slow burn, slightly forbidden (brother’s best friend), new adult romance, and it takes place in Copenhagen. It’s an own-voices story with a heroine who realises she's autistic, written by an autistic author.
