Book Synopsis The Uses of Obscurity by : Allon White
Download or read book The Uses of Obscurity written by Allon White and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this book examines why and how textual difficulty became a norm of modernist literature and questions how we can begin to account for the forms of obscurity and difficulty which developed in the late 19th Century and which became so important to modernism. The author argues that the decline of realism entailed the growth of ‘symptomatic’ or ‘subtextual’ reading which tended to treat fiction as compromised autobiography. This kind of reading left the author dangerously isolated and exposed in the midst of a newly sophisticated public. Within this general cultural perspective, the book traces the private anxieties that led George Meredith, Joseph Conrad and Henry James to conceal themselves within their complex and resistant fictions. It discusses opacity in the texts themselves – embarrassment and shame in Meredith; ‘engimas’ in Conrad; and the fear of vulgarity and knowledge in Henry James.

Book excerpt: This gripping debut horror novel about the death of a haunted Australian town creeps with “a similar energy and dread as that found in Josh Malerman’s Bird Box” (Kirkus Reviews). “Beautifully written.” —Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts On winter solstice, the birds disappeared, and the mist arrived. The inhabitants of Nebulah quickly learn not to venture out after dark. But it is hard to stay indoors: cabin fever sets in, and the mist can be beguiling, too. Eventually only six remain. Like the rest of the townspeople, Pete has nowhere else to go. After he rescues a stranded psychic from a terrible fate, he’s given a warning: he will be dead by solstice unless he leaves town—soon.

Book excerpt: This report concentrates on the issue of whether witnesses have previously misled a select committee of the House of Commons over the extent and knowledge of phone-hacking. The Committee concludes that several individuals misled the Committee in 2009 and more recently, and that the News of the World and News International corporately misled the Committee about the true nature and extent of the internal investigations they carried out into phone-hacking, made statements that were not fully truthful, and withheld documents. The companies' directors - including Rupert Murdoch and James Murdoch - should be prepared to take responsibility for these failings. The Committee reports its findings for the House of Commons to decide whether a contempt has been committed and, if so, what punishment should be imposed.

Book Synopsis Journalism Ethics by : Roger Patching
Download or read book Journalism Ethics written by Roger Patching and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalism Ethics: Arguments and Cases for the 21st Century explores the major ethical dilemmas facing journalists in the digital age. Engaging with both the theory and practice of journalism ethics, this text explains the key ethical concepts and dilemmas in journalism and provides an international range of examples and case studies, considering traditional and social media from a global perspective. Journalism Ethics offers an introductory philosophical underpinning to ethics that traces the history of the freedom of expression from the time of Greek philosophers like Aristotle, through the French and American revolutions, to modern day. Throughout the book Patching and Hirst examine ethically-challenging issues such as deception, trial by media, dealing with sources and privacy intrusion. They also explore continuing ethical fault lines around accuracy, bias, fairness and objectivity, chequebook journalism, the problems of the foreign correspondent, the conflicts between ethics and the law and between journalists and public relations consultants. Concluding with a step-by-step guide to ethical thinking on the job, this textbook is an invaluable resource for students of journalism, media and communication.
