Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic reference for radar and remote sensing engineers, Handbook of Radar for Scattering Statistics for Terrain, has been reissued with updated, practical software for modern data analysis applications. First published in 1989, this update features a new preface, along with three new appendices that explain how to use the new software and graphical user interface. Python- and MATLAB-based software has been utilized so remote sensing and radar engineers can utilize the wealth of statistical data that came with the original book and software. This update combines the book and software, previously sold separately, into a single new product. The text first presents detailed examinations of the statistical behavior of speckle when superimposed on nonuniform terrain. The Handbook of Radar Scattering Statistics for Terrain then supports system design and signal processing applications with a complete database of calibrated backscattering coefficients. Compiled over 30 years, the statistical summaries of radar backscatter from terrain offers you over 400,000 data points compiled in tabular format. With this text, you'll own the most comprehensive database of radar terrain scattering statistics ever compiled. Derived from measurements made by both airborne and ground-based scatterometer systems, the database includes information from 114 references. The text provides over 60 tables of backscatter data for 9 different surface categories, all derived under strict quality criteria. Rigorous standards for calibration accuracy, measurement precision, and category identification make the database the most reliable source for scattering statistics ever available.

Book excerpt: This final report provides a summary of the results we realized over the past three years in the field of polarimetric radar scattering from terrain. The contributions include: (a) The development of techniques for accurate calibration and measurement of the polarimetric scattering response of distributed targets, (b) The development of detection algorithms using polarimetric data, (c) The development of theoretical models for characterizing scattering by and propagation through dense random media, and (d) The development of semi-empirical models for millimeter-wave scattering from bare-soil surfaces and snow-covered terrain. Book excerpt: In the active and passive microwave remote sensing of earth terrain using radars and radiometers, the scattering effects due to medium inhomogeneities and surface roughness play a dominant role in the determination of radar back-scattering cross-sections and the brightness temperatures. Two theoretical models have been developed to characterize terrain media: (1) a random medium model where scattering effects can be accounted for by introducing a randomly fluctuating part in the permittivities; (2) the discrete scatterer model where discrete scatterers are imbedded in a homogeneous background medium. The earth terrain is then modelled as layers of such scattering media bounded by rough surface with air above and homogeneous half-space below. In matching the theoretical results with experimental data collected from vegetation and snow fields, the following findings are summarized: (1) for radar observations near nadir, rough surface effects are important; (2) for snow fields the horizontal correlation length is greater than the vertical correlation length whereas for vegetation field their relative sizes depend on the types of vegetation; (3) the vertically polarized backscattering cross section is always larger than the horizontally polarized backscattering cross section for half space scattering media and may become smaller for a two-layer model; (4) for snow field displaying a diurnal change, a three-layer model including a thin top layer caused by sun-light illumination must be used; (5) the correspondence between the continuum random model and the discrete spherical model can be verified when the vertical and horizontal correlation lengths are equal. Book excerpt: A radiative transfer model was developed for characterizing radar backscatter from snow- covered ground at millimeter wave-lengths. The model was used to evaluate the radar response to incidence angle, snow depth, snow surface roughness, and snow liquid water content, for both like- and cross-polarization configurations. The model behavior was compared with experimental observations made at 35, 95, and 140 GHz, including observations over diurnal cycles. The experimental data were acquired during the 1989 and 1990 winter seasons in Michigan using a truck-mounted millimeter-wave scatterometer system capable of observing the ground surface over a wide range of incidence angles for all linear combinations of transmit and receive antenna polarizations. Comparison of the measured data with model calculations revealed excellent agreement for dry snow as well as when the surface layer of the snowpack was wet. However, when the surface layer was dry and lower layers were wet, the model results were inconsistent with the radar observations. To deal with tile general case wherein the liquid water content exhibits a nonlinear profile with depth, a hybrid numerical-first order solution of the radiative transfer model was developed. This hybrid model provided excellent agreement with the diurnal observations of radar backscatter.

In addition, surveys of airborne missions and of campaigns can be found on the accompanying CD-ROM in pdf-format. Compared with the 3rd edition the spaceborne part grew from about 300 to 1000 pages. The complete text - including the electronic-only chapters - contains more than 1900 pages. New chapters treat the history of Earth observation and university missions. The number of commercial Earth imaging missions has grown significantly. A chapter contains reference data and definitions. Extensive appendices provide a comprehensive glossary, acronyms and abbreviations and an index of sensors. An effort has been made to present the information in context, to point out relationships and interconnections. The book may serve as a reference and guide to all involved in the various national and international space programs: researchers and managers, service providers and data users, teachers and students.
