This book was released on 1999-10-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailing the energy-yielding macronutrients, carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, this book discusses the body's need for these nutrients for growth, development and exercise. This book and its companion book "Macroelements, Water, and Electrolytes in Sports Nutrition" address the relationship of macronutrient and macroelement needs and interactions to sports and exercise. Ideal for individuals working in research in the energy areas of sports nutrition, Energy Yielding Macronutrients & Energy Metabolism in Sports Nutrition includes reviews of digestion, absorption, energy gains from energy-yielding macronutrients, nutritional implications of gender and age differences in energy metabolism, and weight loss and gain as influenced by caloric needs. Containing work by both editors and contributors accomplished in the field, this book provides new and provocative insights into the relationship between energy-yielding macronutrients and exercise.

Book Synopsis Amino Acids in Nutrition and Health by : Guoyao Wu
Download or read book Amino Acids in Nutrition and Health written by Guoyao Wu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amino acids (AAs) are not only building blocks of protein, but are also signalling molecules as well as regulators of gene expression and the protein phosphorylation cascade. Additionally, AAs are key precursors for syntheses of hormones and low-molecular weight nitrogenous substances with each having enormous biological importance. For example, physiological concentrations of AA metabolites (e.g., nitric oxide, polyamines, glutathione, taurine, thyroid hormones, and serotonin) are required for cell functions. Growing evidence shows that humans and animals have dietary requirements for all proteinogenic AAs. Mammals, birds and fish also have species- and age-dependent needs for some AA-related substances. However, elevated levels of other products (e.g., ammonia, homocysteine, H2S, and asymmetric dimethylarginine) are pathogenic factors for neurological disorders, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular disease. Thus, optimal amounts of AAs and their ratios in diets and circulation are crucial for whole body homeostasis and health. Adequate provision of one or a mixture of functional AAs or metabolites may be beneficial for ameliorating health problems at various stages of the life cycle (e.g., fetal growth restriction, neonatal morbidity and mortality, weaning-associated intestinal dysfunction and wasting syndrome, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, the metabolic syndrome, and infertility). Dietary supplementation of these nutrients can also optimize the efficiency of metabolic transformations to enhance muscle growth, milk production, and athletic performance, while preventing excess fat deposition and reducing adiposity. Therefore, functional AAs hold great promise in improving the growth, health and well-being of individuals. Book Synopsis Integrative Human Biochemistry by : Andrea T. da Poian
Download or read book Integrative Human Biochemistry written by Andrea T. da Poian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers in detail the mechanisms for how energy is managed in the human body. The basic principles that elucidate the reactivity and physical interactions of matter are addressed and quantified with simple approaches. Three-dimensional representations of molecules are presented throughout the book so molecules can be viewed as unique entities in their shape and function. The book is focused on the molecular mechanisms of cellular processes in the context of human physiological situations such as fasting, feeding and physical exercise, in which metabolic regulation is highlighted. Furthermore the book uses key historical experiments that opened up new concepts in Biochemistry to further illustrate how the human body functions at molecular level, helping students to appreciate how scientific knowledge emerges. This book also: Elucidates the foundations of the molecular events of life Uses key historical experiments that opened up new concepts in Biochemistry to further illustrate how the human body functions at molecular level, helping students to appreciate how scientific knowledge emerges Provides realistic representations of molecules throughout the book Advance Praise for Integrative Human Biochemistry “This textbook provides a modern and integrative perspective of human biochemistry and will be a faithful companion to health science students following curricula in which this discipline is addressed. This textbook will be a most useful tool for the teaching community.” –Joan Guinovart Director of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine, Barcelona, Spain President-elect of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, IUBMB
Book Synopsis Progress in Research on Energy and Protein Metabolism by : W.B. Souffrant
Download or read book Progress in Research on Energy and Protein Metabolism written by W.B. Souffrant and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book compiles the scientific content of the International Symposium on Energy & Protein Metabolism and Nutrition, in Rostock-Warnemünde 13th-18th September 2003. Specialists from all over the world working in energy and protein metabolism research were assembled to discuss scientific matters of physiology, nutrition, immunology and genetics. All scientific contributions, presented as oral communications or posters, are published in this book. Additionally to these more than 150 articles and 10 review papers, presented by invited speakers, give an overview of the state of the art in special research areas of energy and protein metabolism. The book presents latest results in topics of energy metabolism such as environmental aspects of energy homeostasis, dietary and genetic aspects as well as tissue, organ and whole body energy metabolism and methodology. Furthermore this compilation also gives insight in current affairs of protein research, i.e. protein metabolism and microbiology in the gastro-intestinal tract and requirements and post-absorptive metabolism of amino acids. Apart from these specific questions other topics concerning genes and nutrition or modelling and regulation of energy and protein status were of common interest. The intention of these proceedings is to disseminate latest perceptions of energy and protein research and with this to attempt the connection of areas in animal and human life sciences."
