This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea achieved a double revolution in the second half of the twentieth century. In just over three decades, South Korea transformed itself from an underdeveloped, agrarian country into an affluent, industrialized one. At the same time, democracy replaced a long series of military authoritarian regimes. These historic changes began under President Park Chung Hee, who seized power through a military coup in 1961 and ruled South Korea until his assassination on October 26, 1979. While the state's dominant role in South Korea's rapid industrialization is widely accepted, the degree to which Park was personally responsible for changing the national character remains hotly debated. This book examines the rationale and ideals behind Park's philosophy of national development in order to evaluate the degree to which the national character and moral values were reconstructed.

Book excerpt: This book is my Ph.D dissertation on two epochal political upheavals, known in Korea as the April 19 Student Revolution of 1960 and the May 16 Military Coup d’etat of l961. The comparative analysis of their causes and processes and their respective impacts on Korean political and economic development was the central focus of this study. It was written in 1970. Korea’s political miracle such as liberty, democracy, and unity of our nation took fertile root from the April Student Revolution, as its economic miracle of rapid modernization and industrialization gained momentum from the May Military Coup. Ultimately, however, our people’s sweats, tears and sacrifices are behind these two “miracles”.
Book Synopsis The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine, 1946-76 by : Robert A. Doughty
Download or read book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine, 1946-76 written by Robert A. Doughty and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea by : James E. Hoare
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea written by James E. Hoare and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korea (Republic of Korea) is the more successful of the two Koreas in both economic and political terms. Even the Asian economic crisis of 1997–1998, which hit badly, was weathered successfully, and when the next crisis came along in 2007, South Korea coped better than many other countries. This economic strength, taken with the steady progress of democratization since 1987, indicates that when the peninsula is eventually reunified, as one day it probably will be, a new unified Korea will follow the South Korea model rather than that of North Korea. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Republic of Korea.

Book Synopsis Globalizing the U.S. Presidency by : Cyrus Schayegh
Download or read book Globalizing the U.S. Presidency written by Cyrus Schayegh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using John F. Kennedy as a central figure and reference point, this volume explores how postcolonial citizens viewed the US president when peak decolonization met the Cold War. Exploring how their appropriations blended with their own domestic and regional realities, the chapters span sources, cases and languages from Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe to explore the history of US and third world relations in a way that pushes beyond US-centric themes. Examining a range of actors, Globalizing the U.S. Presidency studies various political, sociocultural and economic domestic and regional contexts during the Cold War era, and explores themes such as appropriation, antagonism and contestation within decolonisation. Attempting to both de-americanize and globalize John F. Kennedy and the US Presidency, the chapters examine how the perceptions of the president were fed by everyday experiences of national and international postcolonial lives. The many examples of worldwide interest in the US president at this time illustrate that this time was a historical turning point for the role of the US on the global stage. The hopes and fears of peaking decolonization, the resulting pressure on Washington, Moscow and other powers, and a new mediascape together ushered in a more comprehensive globalization of international politics, and a new meaning to 'the United States in the world'.
