Book Synopsis The Triggering Procedure of the International Criminal Court by : Héctor Olásolo
Download or read book The Triggering Procedure of the International Criminal Court written by Héctor Olásolo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rome Statute, unlike the statutes of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, creates a permanent court whose dormant jurisdiction covers the territory and includes the nationals of States Parties and is universal in cases where the Security Council makes a referral. Besides, unlike the "ad hoc" tribunals, which have jurisdiction over specific crisis situations whose personal, territorial and temporal parameters have been defined in their respective statutes by the UN Security Council, in the case of the ICC it is not possible to determine a priori in which situations the ICC will be involved. As a result, the most relevant activity of the Court is the determination of those situations regarding which the dormant jurisdiction of the Court will be triggered. The book "The Triggering Procedure of the International Criminal Court" constitutes the first comprehensive analysis of the proceedings that, prior to any criminal investigation, aim to make such a fundamental determination.

Book Synopsis Commander's handbook for joint time-sensitive targeting by :
Download or read book Commander's handbook for joint time-sensitive targeting written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is designed for joint force commanders and their staffs to assist them in rapid target engagement. It is meant to be a resource tool for the joint force commander joint force headquarters and the joint force components. Though consistent with joint and Service doctrine it is not a doctrinal publication. Joint Publication 3-60 Joint Doctrine for Targeting, 17 January 2002 is the authoritative publication and has an appendix for time-sensitive targeting considerations. As we learned from experiences in such locales as Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan our ability to engage time-sensitive targets in a timely efficient and effective manner is a requisite for successful military operations. US forces are faced with an ever-increasing threat from adversaries that pose (or could pose) a direct danger and demand an immediate response. The complexities of engaging time-sensitive targets require joint force commanders and their staffs to fully appreciate the coordination and integration that are required to minimize the chance of fratricide and other collateral effects. This Handbook provides examples from combatant commands and joint task forces to assist in the prosecution of time-sensitive targets.
Book Synopsis Crimes of Obedience by : Herbert C. Kelman
Download or read book Crimes of Obedience written by Herbert C. Kelman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergeant William Calley's defense of his behavior in the My Lai massacre and the widespread public support for his argument that he was merely obeying orders from a superior and was not personally culpable led Herbert C. Kelman and V. Lee Hamilton to investigate the attitudes toward responsibility and authority that underlie "crimes of obedience"--not only in military circumstances like My Lai but as manifested in Watergate, the Iran-Contra scandal, and the Kurt Waldheim affair. Their book is an ardent plea for the right and obligation of citizens to resist illegal and immoral orders from above.

Book Synopsis A Wilderness of Error by : Errol Morris
Download or read book A Wilderness of Error written by Errol Morris and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-22 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon to be an FX Docuseries from Emmy® Award-Winning Producer Marc Smerling (The Jinx) featuring the author Errol Morris! Academy Award–winning filmmaker Errol Morris examines one of the most notorious and mysterious murder trials of the twentieth century In this profoundly original meditation on truth and the justice system, Errol Morris—a former private detective and director of The Thin Blue Line—delves deeply into the infamous Jeffrey MacDonald murder case. MacDonald, whose pregnant wife and two young daughters were brutally murdered in 1970, was convicted of the killings in 1979 and remains in prison today. The culmination of an investigation spanning over twenty years and a masterly reinvention of the true-crime thriller, A Wilderness of Error is a shocking book because it shows that everything we have been told about the case is deeply unreliable and that crucial elements of case against MacDonald are simply not true.
