Book Synopsis A Methodology for the Cryptanalysis of Classical Ciphers with Search Metaheuristics by : George Lasry
Download or read book A Methodology for the Cryptanalysis of Classical Ciphers with Search Metaheuristics written by George Lasry and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2018 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryptography, the art and science of creating secret codes, and cryptanalysis, the art and science of breaking secret codes, underwent a similar and parallel course during history. Both fields evolved from manual encryption methods and manual codebreaking techniques, to cipher machines and codebreaking machines in the first half of the 20th century, and finally to computerbased encryption and cryptanalysis from the second half of the 20th century. However, despite the advent of modern computing technology, some of the more challenging classical cipher systems and machines have not yet been successfully cryptanalyzed. For others, cryptanalytic methods exist, but only for special and advantageous cases, such as when large amounts of ciphertext are available. Starting from the 1990s, local search metaheuristics such as hill climbing, genetic algorithms, and simulated annealing have been employed, and in some cases, successfully, for the cryptanalysis of several classical ciphers. In most cases, however, results were mixed, and the application of such methods rather limited in their scope and performance. In this work, a robust framework and methodology for the cryptanalysis of classical ciphers using local search metaheuristics, mainly hill climbing and simulated annealing, is described. In an extensive set of case studies conducted as part of this research, this new methodology has been validated and demonstrated as highly effective for the cryptanalysis of several challenging cipher systems and machines, which could not be effectively cryptanalyzed before, and with drastic improvements compared to previously published methods. This work also led to the decipherment of original encrypted messages from WWI, and to the solution, for the first time, of several public cryptographic challenges.

Download or read book Crypto written by Steven Levy and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-01-08 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you've ever made a secure purchase with your credit card over the Internet, then you have seen cryptography, or "crypto", in action. From Stephen Levy—the author who made "hackers" a household word—comes this account of a revolution that is already affecting every citizen in the twenty-first century. Crypto tells the inside story of how a group of "crypto rebels"—nerds and visionaries turned freedom fighters—teamed up with corporate interests to beat Big Brother and ensure our privacy on the Internet. Levy's history of one of the most controversial and important topics of the digital age reads like the best futuristic fiction.

Book Synopsis Eavesdropping on Hell by : Robert J. Hanyok
Download or read book Eavesdropping on Hell written by Robert J. Hanyok and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This recent government publication investigates an area often overlooked by historians: the impact of the Holocaust on the Western powers' intelligence-gathering community. A guide for researchers rather than a narrative study, it explains the archival organization of wartime records accumulated by the U.S. Army's Signal Intelligence Service and Britain's Government Code and Cypher School. In addition, it summarizes Holocaust-related information intercepted during the war years and deals at length with the fascinating question of how information about the Holocaust first reached the West. The guide begins with brief summaries of the history of anti-Semitism in the West and early Nazi policies in Germany. An overview of the Allies' system of gathering communications intelligence follows, along with a list of American and British sources of cryptologic records. A concise review of communications intelligence notes items of particular relevance to the Holocaust's historical narrative, and the book concludes with observations on cryptology and the Holocaust. Numerous photographs illuminate the text.

Book Synopsis US Army Basic Cryptanalysis Field Manual by : Us Army
Download or read book US Army Basic Cryptanalysis Field Manual written by Us Army and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual presents the basic principles and techniques of cryptanalysts and their relation to cryptography. Cryptography concerns the various ways of protecting messages from being understood by anyone except those for whom the messages are intended. Cryptographers are the people who create and use codes and ciphers. Cryptanalytics is the art and science of solving unknown codes and ciphers. Cryptanalysts try to break the codes and ciphers created and used by cryptographers. This field manual covers the essentials of Cryptanalysis. Everything from medieval Arabic statistics to modern American comupting went into this Field Manual, thereby giving the reader a wide but deep view on the whole subject of cryptanalysis.
