JL HE failure which has hitherto marked the operations of Great Britain, in almost all her continental enterprizes, induces unreflecting persons to believe, that the English, though excellent seamen, are bad soldiers. If we are to understand by this, that the English soldiers have less courage than their sailors, it is an ahsurdity. Courage is not confined to any particular element; ability and experience may contribute to victories at sea, and the want of them to defeats by land. It is impossible that the sailors of England, who rule at sea, should, when transported on shore, be able to contend with regular troops. We may rather say, that the same French, who are courageous in brigades, are cowardly at sea, because the English are upon that element, in every respect, superior: * the disasters of the English on the Continent arise from other causes, which we shall proceed to point out. The English are, indubitably, the most intrepid people in Europe. No nation * The truth of this observation is manifest in every point of view, from their boasted flotillas along their own shores, to their captured squadrons in the East. T. braves braves death, or sees its approach with so much coolness and indifference. The spirit of adventure, which distinguishes them, their valour in action, their frequent suicides, and the firmness with which their very criminals undergo the most summary executions, prove that intrepidity is a national characteristic. Wesley’s unpromising youth provides no foreshadowing of his future greatness...Guedalla rescues Wellington’s highly successful apprenticeship in arms in India from historical obscurity; only Jac Weller has covered that period better. Wellington’s successes in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo have been well-documented and Guedalla does not place undue emphasis on this portion of his career. Guedalla does carry the narrative forward into Wellington’s long career in government and in politics after Waterloo, where, despite long and faithful public service, he might fairly be said to have outlived his times. It is Guedalla’s gift as an historian to place Wellington in the context of his times and especially of his social class as a member of the Anglo-Irish nobility. His extensive research into Wellington’s correspondence has produced a wealth of quotes that help provide a flavor of the man. Guedalla avoids the temptation to speculate; Wellington’s worlds and actions are allowed to speak for him. We come away with a sense of Wellington as a strict, disciplined, methodical, and confident military officer endowed with both an enormous amount of common sense about people and politics and with distinct pride and ambition about his own career.
