The adsorbent dosage, pH, temperature and contact time were investigated. The adsorption isotherms of all three metal ions followed well Langmuir equation. Modified sodium polyphosphate-kaolinite clay was found to remove heavy metal ions efficiently from aqueous solutions with selectivity in the order of Pb2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+. The maximum heavy metal ions adsorbed by modified. The results of this study showed that the sodium polyphosphate-kaolinite clay powder can be efficiently used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of divalent lead, zinc and cadmium from aqueous solution.

Removal of these metals from wastewater effluents is crucial as this contamination is non-biodegradable and highly toxic. Extensive research has been carried out to introduce new materials which alleviate these metals from wastewater effluents before their discharge into water bodies such as rivers and lakes. Conventional methods to remove heavy metals from wastewater include chemical precipitation, ion-exchange and chelation-adsorption. Adsorption is an important and developing research area because of the new material types available according to the application. Furthermore, it is standard process to place the adsorbent in a column and pump the wastewater through in a continuous system. It is also a cost-effective process. Chelating adsorbents are typically characterised by functional groups containing 0, N, S, and P donor atoms which coordinate to different heavy metal ions. It is necessary that the adsorbent has a high capacity and that the kinetics of adsorption is sufficiently fast. Polyaminepolycarboxylic (PAPC) acids are strong chelating agents and form stable chelates with different types of metals: transition, lanthanides and actinides. In spite of its exceptional chelating power, many of the PAPC compounds - such as DTPA (8-coordinations), CDTA (6-coordinations) and NTA (4-coordinations) - have not been thoroughly studied for use as active sites in adsorbent materials for heavy metal remediation from contaminated water effluents. Furthermore, the effect of the number of coordination groups on the adsorption behaviour has not been investigated. Use of these strong chelating agents (PAPC) for heavy metal removal by a polymeric adsorbent is presented in this study, with discussion of the chelation mechanism and affinity. The PAPC chelating agents were anchored on melamineformaldehyde (MF) gel. Although MF gel has suitable chemical and physical properties allowing the production of an adsorbent for heavy metal removal, it has not been studied. MF gel is porous and its matrix has a suitable platform to functionalize with some chelating compounds. PAPC-modified melamine-formaldehyde matrix is easy to produce compared to conventional chelating resins based on styrene/divinylbenzene. In this work, melamine-formaldehyde-polyaminepolycarboxylic acid (MF-PAPC) chelating adsorbents were synthesised by anchoring polyaminepolycarboxylic acids (PAPC) to melamine by the reaction of the carboxylic group of PAPC with a primary amine group of melamine forming a covalent amide bond during MF matrix formation.

The substance which adsorbs another substance on its surface is called as adsorbent while the substance which itself get adsorbed on the surface of another substance is called adsorbate. All adsorption performance processes are depends on solid-liquid equilibria and on mass transfer rates. If the mass transfer is in opposite direction then it is called as Desorption. Most adsorbents are highly porous materials, and adsorption takes place primarily on the walls of the pores or at the specific sites inside the particle. An adsorbent material must have a high internal volume, which is accessible to the components being removed from the solvent. Surface area and the distribution of area with respect to pore size are two very important factors in determining extent of adsorption. The overall rate of adsorption is controlled by the rate of diffusion of solute within the capillary pores of the adsorbent and varies with square root of the contact time with the adsorbent.

Heavy metals are highly toxic to the ecosystem and human even at very low concentrations. We focused on easily available, green and eco-friendly with low operational cost materials to remove heavy metals from industrial wastewater. Chitosan is considered an alternative and sustainable adsorbent due to its highly efficient adsorption capacities for heavy metals. In this particular study, chitosan was successfully modified by using diatomaceous earth and then fabricated as spherical beads using the drop-wise method. Pristine chitosan (CS) beads and chitosan coated diatomaceous earth (CSDE) beads were used to remove zinc, chromium, lead, and nickel ions from aqueous solutions in batch and continuous adsorption processes. The prepared adsorbents were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and zeta potential. The results showed that the prepared adsorbents were porous in nature and the total surface area were increased from 1.9 m2/g for pristine chitosan to 14.4 m2/g for chitosan coated diatomaceous earth. The performance of prepared adsorbents was investigated at different temperatures, initial pH of the solution, contact times, initial metal concentrations. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model is more likely to predict the kinetic behavior of the metal ions adsorption process for the whole used contact time range, and the adsorption isotherm data of CS and CSDE beads were well fitted to Langmuir model. The maximal adsorption capacities of prepared CSDE beads were found to be pH dependent as follows: - Zinc ion - 127.4 mg/g at initial Zn(II) concentration 500 mg/L and pH 6. - Chromium ion - 84.23 mg/g at initial Cr(VI) concentration 1000 mg/L and pH 3. - Lead ion - 175.22 mg/g at initial Pb(II) concentration 400 mg/L and pH 7. - Nickel ion - 149.64 mg/g at initial Ni(II) concentration 400 mg/L and pH 6. Successful desorption and regeneration of prepared adsorbents were achieved (with common chemicals) and possessed excellent reusability (up to 10 cycles without a significant loss in adsorption capacity). The common anions and cations coexisting ions have insignificant impact on the removal capacity of prepared adsorbents. Overall, these results suggest that the environmentally friendly materials might be recognized as effective adsorbent and sustainable means for the separation of heavy metals from wastewater streams. That will lead to a new solution to water pollution required in the modern industrial society.
