Book Synopsis Mil's Heavylift Helicopters by : E. Gordon
Download or read book Mil's Heavylift Helicopters written by E. Gordon and published by Midland Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1950s a need arose in the Soviet Union for a heavy transport and assault helicopter capable of airlifting cargo weighing up to 6 tons (13,230 lbs) - primarily artillery systems. The chief Soviet "helicopter maker" - OKB-329 headed by Mikhail L. Mil - took on this important task. The prototype of the V-6 (eventually redesignated Mi-6), which first flew in June 1957, was a much larger machine. For the first time not only in the Mil OKB's practice but also in the world helicopter design practice, the powerplant consisted of two gas turbine engines; another peculiarity was the use of auxiliary wing offloading the main rotor in cruise flight. The Mi-6 provided a major boost to the Soviet Air Force's capability. In 1959 it served as the basis for the unconventional Mi-10 capable of straddling bulky loads. In 1967, however, Mil truly amazed the world by bringing out the mighty V-12 capable of lifting a 25-ton (55,110-lb) payload. This machine was destined to remain in prototype form; yet in 1977 the OKB achieved a major success with the smaller but more advanced Mi-26, which remains the world's largest production helicopter and, like the Mi-6, has rendered invaluable service in both civil and military applications. This book covers the development history and design of all the various types in detail and is well illustrated with numerous photos and line drawings.

Download or read book Soviet and Russian Military Aircraft in the Middle East written by Yefim Gordon and published by Hikoki Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-1950s the export of Soviet arms expanded into the Middle East and were immediately sent to war. Forming the backbone of, amongst others, the air forces of Iraq and Syria, Soviet aircraft were involved in major conflicts such as the Suez Crisis, the Six-Day and Yom Kippur Wars, the Iran-Iraq War, the First and Second Gulf Wars and, more recently, the civil war in Syria. Mikoyan MiG-15 and MiG-29 fighters, Sukhoi Su-7 and Su-22 fighter-bombers, Su-24MK tactical bombers, Su-25 attack aircraft, Mil' Mi-8/Mi-17 and Mi-24/25/35 helicopters, Antonov An-12, and Il'yushin Il-76 transports all played their parts in the region's conflicts. Wars which included Egyptian and Iranian forces also took place entirely in the Middle East and full details of both forces using genuine Soviet types (obtained either from Russia or from Iraq) and their Chinese derivatives are examined. Arranged by country and using previously classified sources, "Soviet and Russian Military Aircraft in the Middle East" includes details of combat use and comprehensive fleet lists of all known Soviet/Russian military aircraft. Highly illustrated with over 375 photographs, national insignia and over 150 color profiles the book forms an invaluable reference for modellers, enthusiasts and aviation historians alike.
Book Synopsis The Sikorsky Legacy by : Sergei I. Sikorsky
Download or read book The Sikorsky Legacy written by Sergei I. Sikorsky and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of Sikorsky aviation and its founder, Igor I. Sikorsky, one of the most talented and versatile aeronautical pioneers in history. Sikorsky's aviation career spanned over 60 years and was highlighted by three major achievements: the creation of the world's first four-engine airliner; the record-breaking Clipper Ships, with which Pan American Airways explored transpacific and transatlantic airline service; and the development of the helicopter. Sikorsky then led his engineers out of the piston-engine era and into the jet age with the design and development of some of the most widely used turbine-powered helicopters in aviation history. More than 200 photographs, many from the Sikorsky family archives, document the genius of Sikorsky's intuitive engineering and his lifelong interest in the challenge of the helicopter, which many historians consider to be his crowning achievement.

Download or read book Cherries written by John Podlaski and published by John Podlaski. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970, John Kowalski was among the many young, inexperienced soldiers sent to Vietnam to participate in a contentious war. Referred to as “Cherries” by their veteran counterparts, these recruits were plunged into a horrific reality. The on-the-job training was rigorous, yet most of these youths were ill-prepared to handle the severe mental, emotional, and physical demands of combat. Experiencing enemy fire and observing death up close initiates a profound transformation that is irreversible. The author excels at storytelling. Readers affirm feeling immersed alongside the characters, partaking in their struggle for survival, experiencing the fear, awe, drama, and grief, observing acts of courage, and occasionally sharing in their humor. "Cherries" presents an unvarnished account, and upon completion, readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the trials these young men faced over a year. It's a narrative that grips the reader throughout.
