Book Synopsis Migration and Social Protection in Europe and Beyond (Volume 1) by : Jean-Michel Lafleur
Download or read book Migration and Social Protection in Europe and Beyond (Volume 1) written by Jean-Michel Lafleur and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first open access book in a series of three volumes provides an in-depth analysis of social protection policies that EU Member States make accessible to resident nationals, non-resident nationals and non-national residents. In doing so, it discusses different scenarios in which the interplay between nationality and residence could lead to inequalities of access to welfare. Each chapter maps the eligibility conditions for accessing social benefits, by paying particular attention to the social entitlements that migrants can claim in host countries and/or export from home countries. The book also identifies and compares recent trends of access to welfare entitlements across five policy areas: health care, unemployment, family benefits, pensions, and guaranteed minimum resources. As such this book is a valuable read to researchers, policy makers, government employees and NGO’s.

Book Synopsis Politics of (Dis)Integration by : Sophie Hinger
Download or read book Politics of (Dis)Integration written by Sophie Hinger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores how contemporary integration policies and practices are not just about migrants and minority groups becoming part of society but often also reflect deliberate attempts to undermine their inclusion or participation. This affects individual lives as well as social cohesion. The book highlights the variety of ways in which integration and disintegration are related to, and often depend on each other. By analysing how (dis)integration works within a wide range of legal and institutional settings, this book contributes to the literature on integration by considering (dis)integration as a highly stratified process. Through featuring a fertile combination of comparative policy analyses and ethnographic research based on original material from six European and two non-European countries, this book will be a great resource for students, academics and policy makers in migration and integration studies. Book Presentation: On April 22, 2021, the University of Sheffield hosted the book presentation on “Politics of (Dis)Integration”. During this event, the editors, Sophie Hinger and Reinhard Schweitzer, discussed the book. The event was chaired by Aneta Piekut and Jean-Marie Lafleur was the discussant. Book Synopsis Migration and Asylum in Malta and the European Union by : Peter G. Xuereb
Download or read book Migration and Asylum in Malta and the European Union written by Peter G. Xuereb and published by Midsea Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the end result of a research project and two seminars held between January 2010 and January 2011 with the assistance of the European Commission's Jean Monnet Programme. The aim of the project was to document the legal, policy, political, and social issues relating to migration into the EU, and especially into Malta, and to trace the experience of the irregular immigrant through his or her journey "to Europe" from his or her country of origin, to his or her landing in Malta and then his or her subsequent experience and status. The primary aim of the publication of this collection of papers is to make available as a matter of record and analysis the difficulties faced by the immigrant, but also in the context of those faced by Malta as a small peripheral island State in addressing the phenomenon of irregular migration (often 'illegal' immigration from a national law perspective).
Book Synopsis The Securitization of Migration and Refugee Women by : Alison Gerard
Download or read book The Securitization of Migration and Refugee Women written by Alison Gerard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanised accounts of restrictions on mobility are rarely the focus of debates on irregular migration. Very little is heard from refugees themselves about why they migrate, their experiences whilst entering the EU or how they navigate reception conditions upon arrival, particularly from a gendered perspective. The Securitization of Migration and Refugee Women fills this gap and explores the journey made by refugee women who have travelled from Somalia to the EU to seek asylum. This book reveals the humanised impact of the securitization of migration, the dominant policy response to irregular migration pursued by governments across the Globe. The Southern EU Member State of Malta finds itself on the frontline of policing and securing Europe’s southern external borders against transnational migrants and preventing migrants’ on-migration to other Member States within the EU. The securitization of migration has been responsible for restricting access to asylum, diluting rights and entitlements to refugee protection, and punishing those who arrive in the EU without valid passports –a visibly racialised and gendered population. The stories of the refugee women interviewed for this research detail the ways in which refugee protection is being eroded, selectively applied and in some cases specifically designed to exclude. In contrast to the majority of migration literature, which has largely focused on the male experience, this book focuses on the experiences of refugee women and aims to contribute to the volume of work dedicated to analysing borders from the perspective of those who cross them. This research strengthens existing criminological literature and has the potential to offer insights to policy makers around the world. It will be of interest to academics and students interested in International Crime and Justice, Securitisation, Refugee Law and Border Control, as well as the general reader.
Book Synopsis At Europe's Edge by : Ċetta Mainwaring
Download or read book At Europe's Edge written by Ċetta Mainwaring and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Sea is now the deadliest region in the world for migrants. Although the death toll has been rising for many years, the EU response remains fragmented and short sighted. Politicians frame these migration flows as an unprecedented crisis and emphasize migration control at the EU's external boundaries. In this context, At Europe's Edge investigates why the EU prioritizes the fortification of its external borders; why migrants nevertheless continue to cross the Mediterranean and to die at sea; and how EU member states on the southern periphery respond to their new role as migration gatekeepers. The book addresses these questions by examining the relationship between the EU and Malta, a small state with an outsized role in migration politics as EU policies place it at the crosshairs of migration flows and controls. The chapters combine ethnographic methods with macro-level analyses to weave together policymaker, practitioner, and migrant experiences, and demonstrate how the Mediterranean is an important space for the contested construction of 'Europe'. This book provides rich insight into the unexpected level of influence Malta exerts on EU migration governance, as well as the critical role migrants and their clandestine journeys play in animating EU and Maltese migration policies, driving international relations, and producing Malta's political power. By centring on the margins, the book pushes the boundaries of our knowledge of the global politics of migration, asylum, and border security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bird migration between Europe and Africa is a fraught journey, particularly in the Mediterranean, where migratory birds are shot and trapped in large numbers. In Malta, thousands of hunters share a shrinking countryside. They also rub shoulders with a strong bird-protection and conservation lobby. Drawing on years of ethnographic fieldwork, this book traces the complex interactions between hunters, birds and the landscapes they inhabit, as well as the dynamics and politics of bird conservation. Birds of Passage looks at the practice and meaning of hunting in a specific context, and raises broader questions about human-wildlife interactions and the uncertain outcomes of conservation.
