Download or read book Building with Our Hands written by Adela de la Torre and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1993-06-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first interdisciplinary collection of articles addressing the unique history of Chicana women. From a diverse range of perspectives, a new generation of Chicana scholars here chronicles the previously undocumented rich tapestry of Chicanas' lives over the last three centuries. Focusing on how women have grappled with political subordination and sexual exploitation, the contributors confront the complex intersection of class, race, ethnicity, and gender that defines the Chicana experience in America. The book analyzes the ways that oppressive power relations and resistance to domination have shaped Chicana history, exploring subjects as diverse as sexual violence against Amerindian women during the Spanish conquest of California to contemporary Chicanas' efforts to construct feminist cultural discourses. The volume ends with a provocative dialogue among the contributors about the challenges, frustrations, and obstacles that face Chicana scholars, and the voices heard here testify to the vibrant state of Chicano scholarship. Trenchant and wide-ranging, this collection is essential reading for understanding the dynamics of feminism and multiculturalism.

Book Synopsis The Practice of Research on Migration and Mobilities by : Liliana Rivera-Sánchez

This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The migration process is interpreted in a different way when researchers live in so-called societies of origin, than when it is interpreted from societies of destination—even when research work is multi-situated. The localization of researchers in this field involves numerous factors that influence the modalities for conducting research. Research agendas are clearly mediated by these localizations and this book on the contemporary social sciences points out those mediations, breaking with the dichotomous readings that are implicit in this migration process (origin-destination, north-south, and cause-effect, to mention just a few). In the individual chapters, priority is given to presenting the modalities through which research is conducted in multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary teams on the American Continent. In summary, the focus of this book is on the narrative of methodological experience of the Practice of Research on Migration and Mobilities.
Book Synopsis Family Care of the Elderly by : Jordan Kosberg
Download or read book Family Care of the Elderly written by Jordan Kosberg and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1992-08-10 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The caregiving systems and institutions in all countries of the world are being constantly challenged as we experience myriad social and cultural changes. Family Care of the Elderly focuses upon these care systems and explores the consequences of cultural change upon traditional caregiving. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical framework for understanding the differences between the countries and identifies consistent trends. The chapters that follow are organized according to the degree of development of the countries presented, and address the following topics: traditional characteristics; societal changes; consequences of the changes; and responses to the changes. Specific issues addressed include programs and services supporting family caregiving; institutional care; perceived responsibilities by government, private sector, religion, family, etc.; and public policies affecting the elderly. Using this framework, the reader will easily compare the policies and programs within the various countries. A concluding chapter points to variations and similarities between countries and examines future implicationsv of a changing world and family caregiving.
Book Synopsis Transnational Families, Migration and the Circulation of Care by : Loretta Baldassar
Download or read book Transnational Families, Migration and the Circulation of Care written by Loretta Baldassar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without denying the difficulties that confront migrants and their distant kin, this volume highlights the agency of family members in transnational processes of care, in an effort to acknowledge the transnational family as an increasingly common family form and to question the predominantly negative conceptualisations of this type of family. It re-conceptualises transnational care as a set of activities that circulates between home and host countries - across generations - and fluctuates over the life course, going beyond a focus on mother-child relationships to include multidirectional exchanges across generations and between genders. It highlights, in particular, how the sense of belonging in transnational families is sustained by the reciprocal, though uneven, exchange of caregiving, which binds members together in intergenerational networks of reciprocity and obligation, love and trust that are simultaneously fraught with tension, contest and relations of unequal power. The chapters that make up this volume cover a rich array of ethnographic case studies including analyses of transnational families who circulate care between developing nations in Africa, Latin America and Asia to wealthier nations in North America, Europe and Australia. There are also examples of intra- and extra- European, Australian and North American migration, which involve the mobility of both the unskilled and working class as well as the skilled middle and aspirational classes.

Book Synopsis Continental Divides: International Migration in the Americas by : Katharine M. Donato
Download or read book Continental Divides: International Migration in the Americas written by Katharine M. Donato and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Mexico-U.S. migration represents the largest sustained migratory flow between two nations worldwide, much of the theoretical and empirical work on migration has focused on this single case. In the last few decades, however, migration has emerged as a critical issue across all nations in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the region seeing its position changed from a net migrant-receiving region to one that now stands as one of the foremost sending areas of the world. In this latest volume of the ANNALS, leading migration scholars seek to redress the imbalance offered when only studying a single case with the first systematic assessment of Latin American migration patterns using ongoing research on the Mexican case as a basis for comparison. Each chapter examines specific propositions or findings derived from the Mexican case that have not yet been tested for other Latin American or Caribbean nations. Using a common framework of data, methods, and theories, they offer a new perspective on the causes and consequences of migration in the Western Hemisphere.
